I had a similar experience, but worse. I was told to take a 1 hour plane to another city where the hq is located. I worked my ass off till 2 a.m. after a very busy day, then went to bed and woke up at 4:30 a.m to catch the cheapest flight that the company selected, flew there, landed at 8, waited till 10 for the meeting to start, 14 more colleagues were there, at 10:13 the meeting started, and at 10:15 the new country manager said "you are all fired". At 11:45 a terrible headache started, at 12:00 my blood pressure increased and kept on increasing, my heart rate was 118 at rest, and I asked for a doctor and a manager took me to the nearest ER. Let that be the worst day in my life, I though I was gonna die and never see my son again... I was tired for 2 days already due to overtime, did not sleep to catch the plane, went there already extra tired, and was rewarded with a layoff. Never ever work hard for an American company. Ever...

I think people are interchanging "fired" and "laid off" which are two different events. To be fired is a pretty serious event meaning you did something wrong. Laid off simply means the company downsized and you no longer had a position. I suppose the end result is the same that you don't have a job but laid off generally has some incentives and on top of that lets you get unemployment benefits since some states don't give it to you if you're "fired" from your job.
