Elon Musk Got Rich From Tesla But What About The Other Founders? | Forbes

2 жыл бұрынElectric car upstart Tesla gathered reporters at a Santa Monica Airport hangar on a July afternoon in 2006 to unveil its battery-powered roadster, an audacious, $100,000 two-seater for which few automotive experts saw much hope of success. The company’s brash, tech-savvy CEO, Martin Eberhard, declared that Silicon Valley ingenuity would teach Detroit’s auto giants how to make compelling zero-emission cars. Tesla’s first effort, a modified Lotus Elise chassis packed with 7,000 tiny lithium-ion cells, was a high-end concept that would soon be followed by a lower-priced family sedan, the chief executive said. The vision he laid out that day ultimately came to pass, but not with him in charge.
Tesla this month became the first carmaker to hit an astonishing $1 trillion valuation, but the CEO who introduced the company to the press 15 years ago didn’t become synonymous with the brand. And he certainly didn’t wind up as the wealthiest person in history. That’s Elon Musk, of course, Tesla’s earliest investor and the company’s current CEO. Musk was also present at Tesla’s debut in 2006, but he assumed a lower profile that day, mainly arguing for the need to shift cars away from gasoline power as quickly as possible.
Tesla’s original CEO, Eberhard, and another early executive named Marc Tarpenning, who in 2003 dreamed up the idea of naming the company’s vehicles in honor of inventor Nikola Tesla, are Tesla’s original shareholders - the first men to claim ownership of the upstart brand that would go on to shake up the Detroit establishment. But neither of them retained enough Tesla stock to achieve billionaire status, much less Musk’s current net worth that Forbes estimates at $282 billion as of Nov. 10. It was Musk’s seed capital-the result of an early payday investing in payments processor PayPal-that turned Eberhard and Tarpenning’s vision into a reality. Ultimately, it also set Musk on a path to take full control of Tesla by steadily raising his ownership stake in a series of nine funding rounds prior to the company’s 2010 IPO, each of which further diluted the stakes of Eberhard and Tarpenning. Even today Musk’s stake grows as he continues to receive quarterly stock awards, in lieu of salary, worth billions of dollars.

Some people make it sound like Musk steal Tesla and claimed all the glory. The other guys had a dream and a business plan, and that's about it. Musk already had a full time job, running SpaceX, not too many people in the world capable of founding and running multiple multi-billions companies. But the Tesla Roadster was floundering, being late and overbudget so much that Musk had to step in and takes control and the rest is history. Tesla would just a footnote in history without Musk. The best analogy I could think is when Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, writer and performer of the song 'Hurt', upon hearing the version by Johnny Cash, came to realization that it's not his song anymore, Johnny Cash's was the definitive version.

Agree with you, Tesla would not have been where it is today had it not been for Musk. But it doesn't change the fact that he stole Tesla. Musk along with the board members had planned a coup against the original founders. The founders even say that Musk often stepped into the roadster project, added steps and made the process slow and worse. If just the Tesla founders said these things then it would have been shady, but even Neuralink original founders claim similar things.

Picking great leaders is difficult. They often speak honest and truthful when others want to hear deception and lies. This is a lesson that we all wish we had learned from 13 years ago when we could’ve bought TSLA for much less and there were signs that Elon Musk was right all along about where the future is going. Tesla has a HUGE total addressable market to reach and therefore ample room to grow... Tesla is still early in their overall growth trajectory. Having the first-mover advantage, they will continue to accelerate their lead and disruptiveness across multiple industries, like transportation (robo taxis), energy storage/distribution, and AI/robotics. The next winner is still Tesla.

Computer on wheels concept was under Elon Musk, Autonomous driving was under Elon Musk, Supercharging network was under Elon Musk, Fremont factory, assembly line design, and the concept of machine that makes the machine was under Elon Musk, not to mention the courage it takes to build a gigafactory that produces more batteries than the rest of the world combined. All of this is simply forgotten by the haters and simply frame Elon Musk as someone who stole other's company/Idea. Tesla is nothing without Elon Musk, period.

While its true that subsequent fund raising dilutes existing shareholders if they dont buy more shares each time, the value of their holdings is not based on their percentage of shares held but rather the stock price which if the company is growing then the price should still go up. If its shrinking then in those cases the price would fall and not be good but many times the price went up so the original founders would have done very well still had they not sold their shares like they did a long time ago.

Why nobody talks about Elon's leadership genius, engineering genius and the ability to set multi-decade visions plus the tanacity to follow through by attracting and inspiring thousands of world's most brilliant engineers? They talk about his wealth as if it was a lucky bet as if it could happen to anyone. I guess the public want stories about lucky, unfair, unjust rich people who must have done a lot of wrong things to end up rich. A story of hard work, genius and belief in science and the human spirit don't sit well with an average Joe. Laughable. Fortunately enough of us understand the true reason for Elon's success and feel privileged to be alive to witness the spectacular work of perhaps the greatest human who had ever walked the planet Earth. We need to support him because the spoiled aspects of human nature will constantly throw obstacles in his way....

Now, 10th gen Civic as a model 3, I find it difficult that Honda would not have exclusive contracts with Acura. so was eberhard and tarpening. However these two founders did not really believe in the company enough to bet on it with their money. Musk proceeds from sale of paypal were roughly the same as these two founders proceeds from selling their ebook reader company. Yet Musk was willing to risk it all and they were not. This is why i really question how much of founders these guys were. Musk the supposed non founder was the one acting like a founder investing all his cash yet the supposed founders just sat back and allowed their stakes to be diluted.

He deserves every penny of it. Keeping green initiatives aside, anyone who can make gold from dirt with their passion while funding it themselves at the same time totally deserves it. Great ideas are a dime a dozen, execution is everything.

With Tesla over $5,000 a share in early 2023 (my best guess), Elon will be worth $1.5 trillion and later this decade $15 Trillion in just Tesla shares alone. Adding up his other companies one could make a case for $100 Trillion net worth early next decade. The good news is this wealth WILL be spread directly and indirectly - less cancer and less poverty and less road traffic from robo taxis later this decade.
