From the mission to Mars, to what it would be like to have it filled with people, join me as we talk about the Elon Musk Mars City By 2050!
--
Elon Musk is a man on a mission, and that mission is to get humanity not just to Mars, but to get them to Mars in this decade. This is why he built his own space organization in SpaceX, to do what NASA (at the time) couldn't do, inspire the need to be in space again. And he has succeeded, and now, SpaceX is not only one of the leading places in all space travel designs and plans, but they are indeed looking to be the group to send a person to Mars. But the plans go beyond that, he doesn't just want to land a person on the surface of Mars and say he's done (which is what we did with the moon if you really think about it), but he wants to set up a colony there.
Surely you must be thinking, "well a colony would be nice, but that'll take some time to get up and running, right?" And you're absolutely right. It will take a lot of time and effort, but some of the work is already being done because of SpaceX via their Starship. You see, the biggest problem with getting to Mars...is getting to Mars. We for the longest time barely had something that could get us to the moon and back safely, and even then (like Apollo 13) it was very easy to screw up. With SpaceX though, they've been working on faster, stronger, and most importantly of all, reusable craft that can operate in space, come back to Earth, and then be outfitted again for future missions. And it's this Starship class of ship that we'd be taking to Mars to go and make a colony.
Musk wrote in a message that the eventual goal for his "Mars plan" is to launch each Starship vehicle three times per day on average. Each Starship will be able to carry about 100 tons of payload to orbit, so, at that flight rate, every vehicle would loft about 100,000 tons annually, he explained.
Now, Musk may sound like he's just spouting out a number here (and if we're being honest...he kind of is) but in truth, he is trying to abide by the laws of space and reality. What do we mean by that? Simple, when it comes to the facts of space travel, having the right windows to travel in are essential. Not the least of which is trying to minimize travel time by making sure you are in the correct windows.
Confused? I'll explain. Think about the solar system we are in, ok? Think about how every planet orbits around the sun. Now, if you were to look at Mercury, and its orbit, and then compare it to Earth's orbit, you would see quite easily that its orbit was shorter than Earths by a very good margins. 88 days compared to 365. So now, compare the Earth's orbit around the sun to Mars. 365 days...to 867 days. Yeah...that's quite a leap. And because of that, the Earth and Mars aren't in the same alignment most times. Thus, Musk, NASA and others are aiming to try and get people to Mars within certain windows.
"Building 100 Starships/year gets to 1000 in 10 years or 100 megatons/year or maybe around 100k people per Earth-Mars orbital sync," he said in a tweet.
So for him, he's thinking REALLY long term by not just trying to get to Mars, but also trying to make it so WHEN we get there, and we have enough time and resources to make a true colony, we have the ships necessary to get a full colony made in a decent amount of time. By "decent amount of time" I mean about 50-100 years. Yeah, this is not a quick process, however, the quicker we get started, the quicker we get done, right? And that's one of Musk's biggest goals. Trying to do things now instead of hoping something will develop later to make things more speedy. Because waiting around just isn't good when you're trying to shape the human race towards its future.
After hearing some of his numbers, he stated one fan asked if he was seriously stating that we could have a million people on Mars by 2050. His response?
"Yes."
Obviously that would go against his timeline we just spelled out in part because of how long it would take to MAKE a colony that could house a million people and be both functional and self-sustaining, but hey, goals!
Before we talk about whether these goals are feasible or not, be sure to like the video or dislike it so that we can work to make these videos as best we can for you the viewer! Also, be sure to subscribe to the channel, that way you don't miss ANY of our weekly videos!
So let's break this down, shall we? Could we really have a full-on colony city on Mars by 2050 that has a million or so people on it?

Sapien Man exactly. We have much better chances colonizing Venus with floating colonies and even then it’s so far off unfortunately. @sapien man: 2/5 earth gravity is a lot more than zero. There are medications for osteoporosis which can also be used prophylactically . The lower gravity would reduce the risk of lumbar disc degeneration and osteoarthritis of weight bearing joints. The increased ultraviolet radiation exposure would increase the risk of skin cancer and cataracts and the cosmic ray exposure the risk of leukaemia and lymphoma. You must live in a pressurised habitat with supplemental oxygen and long term food and water supply would also be problematic
@FlyingSofa28
@FlyingSofa28 3 жыл бұрын
most martian life would be in tunnels at first, far easier to bus up a boring company tunneler and pressurise a tunnel that fart around building domes and covering them. or use one of the giant martian lava tubes. low gravity would mean strict exxercise regimes but if tbey can make it work on the ISS then they can do it on 2/5 gravity for sure. would be cool being able to jump 20 feet, no need for stairs on mars. also game changer for the elderly and infirm.

I was just talking to someone about how we could use nanomachines to essentially 3d print a city on Mars using nothing but the sand and soil already there on the planet by changing the molecular structure to fit whatever is needed for the construction. Then SpaceX would basically only need to worry about shipping power generators (presumably solar) and battery storage systems (which Tesla kind of excels at) reducing the need for resource shipments and minimizing the amount of man power required. If SpaceX sent starships to set up a starlink network in Mars orbit it would really streamline the process as the machines could work more efficiently with a wifi infrastructure in place rather than being required to be in close proximity to a central base of operations. The design of the city could be made digitally from earth over the course of the many years leading up to the mission to actually make a city with all aspects in mind without leaving anything like pedestrians as an afterthought.

The concept of window is not explained very well here. Mars has to be in a certain position relative to Earth. The ships launch in a curving trajectory (part of ellipse) aiming at a point ahead of Mars. While the ships are on the way, Mars moves along, and arrive at the point the ships were aimed at before, just as the ships arrive. The configuration doesn't happen very often. If you miss this window, you have to wait more than a year for another chance. Unless if you have a much better engine and are willing to burn much more fuel.

What elliptical are you talking about? Any rocket launched to a planet in the solar system travels in a straight line. You launch when the target is on it's way not when the planets are closest and both meet at a designated position, shortest path A-B. The pictures you see of curved flight paths are drawn for idiots to understand they're not real. Rockets aren't like throwing a curve ball in baseball they're more like firing a gun at a bird or plane during war, you aim out ahead and meet the target. And the launch window for mars is every 2 years.

Although the effects of chronic space radiation are unclear, low doses of radiation can kill or damage sperm, which might render a man infertile or lead to birth defects. And in rodents, radiation damage can affect offspring born long after the initial exposure to their fathers...living on Mars especially at the very start is not going to be the utopia that science fiction makes it out to be...it would in all probability be decades if not a century before long term dwelling/habitation on the surface would even be remotely possible given the status of current technology*

Sometimes that distance is even greater depending on where Mars and Earth are currently in their orbits around the Sun. 12:18, in a big colony they would probably set up a kind of internet. Movies can be brought to Mars on hardrives or transmitted. Virtuel reality is probably also a thing you could do in your free time on Mars. Messages to earth would also be possible but probably very expensive and without much privacy. The same thing is true for internet from earth. You also have 20 min delay, so videochatting would probably not be an option.

@@bonsoirnon7966 oo wow. For the rover I did read something of 20 minutes. But maybe with a good system 7 minutes will be possible. If you wand something downloaded (for example) from earth it will take exually 7 minutes to earth and 7 minutes back, so 14 minutes

The bit rate is probably too high to make movie transmission viable. Hard drives are they way.

I do believe the 7 minutes depends on the time, some times it gets to like 35 if Mars and Earth are on opposite sides of the sun

Getting one million volunteers to go will be the easiest task of all. I think it will be difficult to decide who will be chosen and a fair rationale for selection.

Mars COULD HAVE happened in 2000. There is and have been plans for the satan V Nova rocket since the 80’s. What wasn’t there was the budget. No one COULD have gotten to mars in 2000, so why spend $1 trillion sending people on a 1 way trip. Right un the middle of 2 bloody wars in the Middle East were young men were going on 1 way trips anyway.

The cool contrarian, why would we go back on the moon? We've done it and that's about it. Unless you plan on living on the moon, which is highly unlikely, I see no point in going back. Instead, we are expanding our reach by aiming higher than what we already achieved so many decades ago.

@@humanbeing1429 Thats a ridiculous statement. We have a space station in orbit, why not one on the moon if we were capable. And if you think people living on the moon is unlikely, why do you find living on Mars viable, the only difference is one is a crap load farther away. NASA stated about ten years ago, "It will take about thirty years to get to Mars, we can get to the moon in ten"'. Thats right, ten years ago a NASA representative said it will take ten years to get to the moon. They also said that a moon base would be a necessary step to colonising Mars, for research and development or a storage location who knows, what we do know is that no one has been able to do it..
