Elon Musk’s Starlink Receives License Approval in Zimbabwe | Firstpost Africa
Zimbabwe has officially granted an operating license to Starlink. The country’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa said Starlink will provide services through its sole and exclusive local partner, IMC Communications. It is expected to result in high-speed, low-cost internet throughout Zimbabwe. According to the World Bank, only 34.8% of Zimbabwe's population had access to the internet as of 2021. However, the entry of Starlink will enhance connectivity even in the most remote areas. The approval comes after Starlink’s services were earlier shut down in the country. Last month, the country's telecommunications regulator suspended the firm's operation until it obtained licensing approval. This comes as Elon Musk’s firm is looking to expand its foothold in the world’s second-largest continent.

Stop lying. It starts at $35 per month. Much cheaper and faster than Econet and easily accessible anywhere. Starlink is owned, provided and priced by Elon Musk. Nobody can interfere with Satellite internet. This is not fibre cable internet which uses local infrastructure.

Key word being can, meaning there's a possibility that internet from satellites could result in unadulterated surveillance of the country. They're probably gonna be marking up the starlink kits heavily. It's some shady company owned by a tenderpreneur who has never delivered ever. And If they could sell us the starlink data by the megabyte they would. Can you imagine that as expensive as it is starlink subscription money will only get you 150GB of very slow Internet in zimbabwe. Zimbabwe is poor. How willl he citizens afford Starlink that is very expensive? Only 13% of their population have internet cause they are poor. Do you expect them to be able to pay for Starlink that is several times more expensive than Telecom provided internet?

13percent ? Poor? Zimbabwean economy figures and indices come from the little formal business activities that remain , the bulk of economic activity is informal. Zimbabwe is not as poor as you think. how much are we paying already for data services? 1 us dollar is worth 200 mb . we all have data on our phones. we all have phones.

@@shadreckdangaphotography I didn't say you don't have phones nor you don't have data. My comment is strictly in respect to Starlink. They charge $600 to install. Then you pay $100 a month. Even though in Africa they reduced the monthly charge like in the case of Nigeria where it is around $40 equivalent a month, do you think many can afford it? Let's use Nigeria as an example. Over 120 million have internet and most of those are from Telecom companies like MTN, GLO, Airtel. Their charges are very cheap which is why many Nigerians can afford it. Starlink has been in Nigeria for almost a year. They have only 25,000 subscribers or so. That is nothing compared with the over 120 million subscribers by the 3 major telecom companies. They are faster, but also more expensive, therefore most Nigerian internet users won't be getting Starlink. Nigeria has a higher economy than Zimbabwe. If Nigerians can't afford Starlink the way they can afford internet from the existing Telecom companies, how can Zimbabweans do it then? This is simple maths not emotions game.
