Gert and Daisy were the two characters of a British female comedy act who are particularly remembered for their contribution to film and radio entertainment during World War II. They were stalwarts of the BBC radio variety programme Workers' Playtime, where they would talk about anything and everything, but especially their fictional husbands: Bert and Wally. In the 50s they had their own radio series for Gert & Daisy called Floggits.
The characters of Gert and Daisy were played by Florence Elsie Waters (1893--1990) and Doris Waters (1904--1978), who were sisters of Horace John Waters (1895--1981), better known as Jack Warner of Dixon of Dock Green fame. Elsie and Doris were awarded OBEs in the King's Birthday Honours List in 1946.
They appeared in three films together Gert and Daisy's Weekend (1942), Gert and Daisy Clean Up (1942) and It's in the Bag (1944), which were all made by Butcher's Film Service. In 1959 they appeared in a television series Gert and Daisy which aired on ITV.

Lovely. Just when one is feeling a bit glum over the pandemic, up comes the "Knees" song, to boost morale.

I remember when I was a kid in the late 60s early 70s and at the local pub when my mum and dad were inside I used to sit outside on the step with a glass bottle of Coke and a bag of crisps and I can remember this being son with someone playing the piano

Maureen Parker Colley - posted in the FB Memories of Brixton and Stockwell that "Elsie and Doris were the guests of honour at our V for Victory party - down Dalyell Road. We got the chairs for the party from Stockwell Road school - it included quite a few of the other streets and was set up in the street outside the Marquis of Lorne. After the eating we trouped round to perhaps Burgoyne Road carrying chairs to a makeshift stage at the back of the school where Elsie and Doris gave us a show. When this was finished us kids who wanted to, performed for the crowd. I couldn't wait - I was up there doing My Old Man Said Follow the Van - in my best cockney. I had been evacuated to Blackpool during the war and gone to school there, so I spoke with an accent from up North.

Elsie Carlisle's version of Butter (on Rex label) sounds rather suggestive :-) She was always slightly naughty.

My relatives and my mother are from England, I am 25 and they were amazed that I didn't know Cockney Slang.... Even though I had this song on my iPod for years! :-)

Being from England doesn't mean they'd know cockney slang. They'd specifically have to be from London to know anything more than the basics - and most Londoners today don't know cockney slang! Even those from East London (where true cockneys are from). So they shouldn't be amazed you don't know it as relatively few people do.

According to my cousin Margaret my father actually DID sing this in the Anderson air raid shelter. This is what people had to put up with before KZfaq. Or in this case on KZfaq.

This isn’t British English, it’s cockney (working class London English)

British English simply means the vocabulary we use (e.g. Trainers, not sneakers) and you can learn that. In terms of accent, there is no such thing as British English - Britain has hundreds of regional accents.
@hellfirepictures
@hellfirepictures 2 жыл бұрын
@@extrude22 It is British English as that means the language we use, not the accents we speak with. Cockney is both British English and a British accent.
