Daniel being called a star in the face of the sky really gets me, that's the point in the song when the beauty and sadness intersect perfectly. Elton John has this angelic way of conveying his love, it's incredible.

It's about an older brother who can't find peace after coming home from the Vietnam War and decided to leave the USA for Spain. Its a sad story of how war can mess up poeple.

This song is very hard for me to listen to without getting emotional. Even just listening to it in this reaction was making me feel sad. You guys did a great job with this reaction, some of the things you said are the exact same things I would have said too. I want to share the story I have about the connection I have to this song. - When I was growing up, we had family friends, like they weren’t blood relatives, but we were close like blood relatives are. My family, and a couple other families, we were all like a circle of family friends and we did a lot of stuff together. The mothers/wives all worked at the same place and because of that they all had the same work schedule, and we all always did stuff at the same time. Among all the kids in the families, I was one of the oldest ones and I always babysat the younger kids. And so this family we were friends with, they gave birth to a son named Daniel. And he was the first baby, like infant baby, among of all us, and so we all loved him. He was a baby, his brother was about 5 and his sister was about 8, and I was maybe like 11 or 12, just to put our ages into perspective back when I would babysit. When Daniel grew out of infancy and started becoming a toddler I would babysit him too. His parents would drop him off at my house or have me come over and I would babysit him and I had a lot of fun with him. I would take my socks off and put them on him, and since he was a small child, my socks would go all the way up his legs and still be long enough to trail behind him. So he would crawl around in them and laugh and we just had a good time. The adults always told me I was good with kids, and I think that’s when it started. Those days when I used to watch Daniel. We all had our own special connections with him, and that’s where mine came from. But then there came a day in 2002, their family was getting ready to go somewhere. Daniel was strapped into his car seat, and his car seat was sitting on the ground outside. I guess they were getting their vehicle packed up before leaving. And one of them either forgot to load Daniel in his car seat into the vehicle, or they mistakingly thought one of them had already loaded Daniel’s car seat back into the vehicle. Whichever it was, they backed out of their driveway and didn’t realize Daniel was still sitting in his car seat which was still sitting in their driveway. Unfortunately their truck backed over Daniel, and before the mistake was realized, the tire of the truck went over Daniel and crushed his head. He was only a year and a half old when he died. Everybody was devastated and we all cried for a long time. That is when me and my siblings were introduced to this song Daniel. We heard it and it was very emotionally heavy to listen to. The day of his funeral was probably the saddest day of my life. And it was the worst sight I have seen in my life so far. Having to look down at a dead child, lying in his small child-sized coffin. And not just a child, but a child who I knew very well. Like I said, his head was crushed by the tire, and they tried to repair his head to the best of their abilities to make him presentable for the funeral. But it didn’t look like him anymore. His face was pressed in, and he just didn’t look like the same child. Later on in the funeral, before they lowered him into the ground, they played the song Daniel. By that point, I was already introduced to the song and I already listened to it enough times to be familiar with the lyrics. And they let off some balloons into the sky because Daniel loved balloons. And I don’t think there was a single person there that day who wasn’t crying. The song Daniel was something I actively listened to for a while following the tragedy. I don’t know how long I listened to it, maybe like a year or so. Eventually it fell out of my rotation and I didn’t really listen to it anymore. I never forgot the song, I could still remember how the song went if you were to ask me. But I guess it just served it’s purpose in my life because I didn’t feel the need to listen to it anymore. Not that I didn’t want to, but it just honestly never crossed my mind to listen to it again. Until about a year ago, my sister said something to me about listening to this song and I asked her out of curiosity “you still listen to that song?” and she was just sort of like “of course I do”. Until then it didn’t even occur to me to listen to it again. So that night I decided to listen to it again, for the first time in like 15 years. I turned it on, and I only got like 5-10 seconds into the song and I just broke down crying. Just hearing that melody again after so many years and hearing those lyrics, the weight of what happened all those years ago, and especially the funeral, it all just came back and hit me in an emotional wave. And not only that, but now I’m an adult, I was a preteen then, and now I’m 28, and there are children in my life. I don’t have kids, but I have 2 nephews who I have a very close bond with. I see them just about every day and I love them like they are my own sons, and now it makes me look at what happened all those years ago from the eyes of an adult. So when I listen to this song now, all I can ever think about is all these emotional memories and thoughts I have attached to it.

This song holds special meaning for me as I lost an older brother when I was in my teens. This song makes me think of him and as I listen to the song I often substitute his name into this song. Thanks for playing this. Namaste

I'm so glad to see you react to Elton John. He is a forgotten superstar where it comes to reaction videos. I hope you create a trend for Elton. He had at least 8 #1 hits and over 50 top 40 hits. His album cuts often rivaled his hits. Many of his albums from the 70's are pure fire. Try the songs Have Mercy On The Criminal, Madman Across The Water, Candle In The Wind and many more too numerous to name. Another forgotten artist from that era is Neil Diamond. He also had many hits like Song Sung Blues, Thank The Lord For The Night Time, Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show and Done Too Soon. I hope you will explore these two superstars. I am sure you both will enjoy their works. By the way, Elton John did the original version of Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me back in the 70's and then the duet with George Michael in the 80's. Elton's version went top 10 and the duet hit #1.

I could be wrong, but I think the clouds in his eyes is a way of him saying he has tears he is holding back when he is saying goodbye. Such a beautiful song, Elton John has made some real gems.

I love Elton John. The first song I can ever remember when I was a kid is "crocodile rock". I think it was his first and I have been listening to him ever since. I used to dance to it as a very little girl (about 3). Another favourite Elton song is "I guess that's why they call it the blues"

I've seen Sir Elton 3 times in concert. The first time was when I was in college, in 1974 in Pittsburgh, Pa., while I was in the military in 1977 in Frankfurt, Germany, and the last time in 1987, in Atlanta, Ga.. The one time in Atlanta, i was about 20 feet to the side of the stage, where he was playing the piano, and I had a wonderful view.

This was a classic AM radio song in my youth. We have a new radio station in Tucson that plays "oldies". It's like traveling back to my high school/college days. The other day on a short trip they played 10 CC, I'm not in Love, followed by Daniel then Van Morrison, Brown-eyed girl. It was a weird magical moment as my mind went right back to those great times riding around in the car with the radio blasting (or the 8 track tapes! LOL). You should react to Van Morrison as I know you've heard 10CC (such a great song).

With most Elton John songs including Daniel. The lyrics are written by American poet Bernie Taupin and the music by Elton John. The song Daniel cuts the poem short and left many people, myself included thinking Daniel was dead but in the poem we find Daniel was taken into the Army and sent to the war in Vietnam. When his service was over Daniel's left shattered, spiritually dead but physically alive but for reasons unknown unable to return home to his family so he spends his time in Spain.
