In the song, John describes his crush on a person called Nikita, a border guard whom he cannot meet because he is not allowed into the country. Though the name Nikita can refer to women in other languages, it is a male name in Russian. In interviews, John has said that he was aware about Nikita being a male name in Russian.

This is my favorite Elton John song and video! I have been a fan of Elton John since the early 70’s! The woman is that video is absolutely beautiful and is proof positive that a woman doesn’t have to be scantily clad to be so beautiful! In the 80s I lived in West Berlin. I have crossed the border between West and East 50 times to visit my family in West Germany. I can still remember the border guards very well, that was very annoying and unfortunately such a beautiful soldier was never there

When I listen to this song I feel that the solo part of the keyboard (3:08 - 3:51) especially contains all the charm and pleasant atmosphere of the 80's, which unfortunately has already disappeared into the fog.

The song Nikita reminds us my wife's mother who passed away 8 years ago. My wife says the lady acting Nikita looked like her mum and she was called "Nikita" by her close friends whilst the song playing in the years. The song which is one of my favorite songs by Sir Elton John makes my wife sad when she listens because she reminds her mum but nevertheless we did not stop listening. Thanks for singing this song Mr. Elton John.

Na canção, Elton John descreve seu amor platônico por uma guarda de fronteira da Alemanha Oriental chamada Nikita, a quem ele não pode visitar já que não tem permissão para entrar no país. O videoclipe foi dirigido por Ken Russell, com a participação de Anya Major como Nikita. Russell não percebeu que Nikita era um nome masculino na Rússia, mas Elton John aceitou o roteiro mesmo assim.
