When he finally comes in with “Oh yeah” I stand up every time. And I have seen this video more than 200 times. Not exaggerating.

I caught him doing this song during his first US tour in 1970. It was three pieces with him on piano, Dee Murray on bass, and Nigel Olson on drums. He lit a fire under my ass that burns still today. I just HAD to become a player which led me to also be a composer, singer, audio engineer, producer and (oddly) a physicist because of that young, highly energetic man. He may sound somewhat different today, but he's still the best pure rock/blues pianist there is...

Have seen him a few times since I was 15 ,am 50 now and it's just magic to see him live isn't it.Try to play a bit myself,so really appreciate his talent.

I envy you a lot, his sound and energy in 1970 was amazing!

omg LUCKY. that is amazing. i saw him a few fridays ago in philadelphia and he played an opening like this for the same song and he sounded so damn good on the piano still as a 72 year old.. but still so jealous of you, man!

The voice change is a combination of age, and a surgery done on his throat. He lost his falsetto range because of that and it sounds deeper.

I’m only 15 and despite never seeing him live, I saw a tribute concert in early 2020. This is an amazing song and the energy boost I get from hearing this song and singing it super loud makes it my favorite song of his

Its not an opinion, Elton John is OBJECTIVELY the best piano player there is in the pop/rock world. There's no happenstance in his playing, every single he touches has a place in the musical idea, . He plays so many notes and such complex with both hands and embellishes where neccessary but not too much. Its just always perfection at every performance.

Piano player all my life, and Elton is the bomb, as are a few others, Billy Joel's incredible. that guy that played keys for The Who, etc. It's hard to have a "best" among so much talent.

His voice sounds so good here. And his piano playing is crazy! All the fills as he sings! I don't know how he does it.

He has a great technique of playing the left hand part a full octave below the lowest notes of the right hand part. It gives extra punch to the bass line.

Check out video of "Take me..." at the Greek Theater from maybe 15 years ago. I think he made Ray Cooper even cry. (Kidding.. maybe) Unbelievable!

And yet it's tame, relative to some of his other live takes on this same number. Take the "Greek Theater" clip, for example. Not for nothing is he the highest earning musician of all time.

I'm not a musician so I wouldn't know; is he pretty much making this up as he goes along? I understand that it is passages of songs pieced together like a medley or an overture. But I have a hunch that he is stringing them together extemporaneously, an improvising the segues outright. Can a musician educate me on this?
@blueflame18562 жыл бұрын
Basically it’s a mix of riffs he’s created over the years, but yes, the rhythm, voicings and timings are all made up on the spot
@Gottenhimfella Жыл бұрын
Listen to his other live clips of this same song. The Greek Theatre one is a good start. All are entirely, almost unrecognisably _sui generis_
