I am an old soldier. This song is so important to me I can never fully express. somehow Elton John and Bernie Taupin have captured the essence of being a survivor or war/combat, and the sense of loss, and bewilderment that endures forever. Thanks you gentlemen. I sing this song at every reunion I attend.

I was blown away when he played this at the beginning of the show. Those VH1 executives and their families packed in the House Of Blues didn't know what to make of this. But Sir Reg, threw us old school fans a bone. He is absolutely amazing performing this. So refreshing to hear ANYTHING off Tumbleweed Connection performed live. "So keep well, keep well old friend and have another drink on me"

Tumbleweed is a wonderful album. Probably my favorite. I include many (including this!) old elton songs in my repertoire. I sing them the way he did back then. The original version of this song is so passionate. It's incredible.

"I may be just a talkin' old soldier but I know how it feels to grow old." So many old soldiers didn't know! Gotta give Bernie and EJ lots of credit for this tune! As a "talkin' old soldier" it moves me!

I know, this is definitely the best I've ever heard him sing. Not that he doesn't usually sing well, but this is amazing.

I've always found it difficult to hit the higher notes sitting down, like John does when he plays piano too. Kudos, Mr. John! Wonderful music.

that bernie taupin can certainly write songs, and elton can really play them, best songwriter/composer pair to ever live

This is a marvelous song - one of those buried treasures. I have also read that the studio recording of this song is the only one in his catalog that is just him and the piano (no strings, synth, etc.). And I wouldn't want it any other way.

Note: this was Elton's only studio song to have only voice and piano!! Hard to believe, eh? Impressive how faithful he is to the original here. IMHO his best album, Tumbleweed Connection. JG

well, now i remember. there is another great great song on the Tumbleweed Connection that was not written by Taupin, but Leslie Duncan. of course i could be wrong, but i don't think so. anyway, it was rare that elton released a song that wasn't written by him, but there you go. excellent song called Love Song!

indeed, maybe. thanks! is this the same Duncan who arranged the incredible strings/orchestration on Elton's 'black' Elton John album, with Your Song and No Shoestrings on Louise? if so... wow. Taaaaaaaaaaaaaaalented!!!

i stand corrected. yes, you're right - on both counts. i have the actual LP, which is where i double-checked. don't know where i got the idea it wasn't. hmm... as for the last line i knew the last line, i just summarized it differently. forgive me.

Why hello, say can I buy you another glass of beer Well thanks a lot that's kind of you, it's nice to know you care These days there's so much going on No one seems to want to know I may be just an old soldier to some But I know how it feels to grow old Yeah that's right, you can see me here most every night You'll always see me staring at the walls and at the lights Funny I remember oh it's years ago I'd say I'd stand at that bar with my friends who've passed away And drink three times the beer that I can drink today Yes I know how it feels to grow old I know what they're saying son There goes old man Joe again Well I may be mad at that I've seen enough To make a man go out his brains Well do they know what it's like To have a graveyard as a friend 'Cause that's where they are boy, all of them Don't seem likely I'll get friends like that again Well it's time I moved off But it's been great just listening to you And I might even see you next time I'm passing through You're right there's so much going on No one seems to want to know So keep well, keep well old friend And have another drink on me Just ignore all the others you got your memories You got your memories

This is one of the greatest songs EVER. it wasn't written by Bernie Taupin, if i remember correctly. The original from Tumbleweed Connection is much better. His voice more passionate and in a higher register. Beautiful - this version also. With lines like, "Do they know what it's like to have a graveyard as a friend" or "Drink up, you've got your memories" it's truly a remarkable song!

What the hell are you talking about? Of course Bernie wrote the lyrics to this, and the last line you quote is actually "just ignore all the others, you've got your memories" not 'drink up'
