Elton is guest at the Ronnie Corbett and Ronnie Barker TV special for the second time I think, after the appearance at The Two Ronnies Christmas special from 1983, where he performs Cold As Christmas.
This TV special is the last ever of The Two Ronnies after 16 years, and Elton sings Candle In The Wind, not lipsynching from the horrible voice version of the famous Australia Tour De Force the year before. Here his voice has fully recovered and is fit and clear after the throat operation suffered in January the same year.

Ten years before the tragic demise of Princess Diana in a car crash, Elton John sang this soon to be famous song. Here I would have been 17 and a YTS trainee, not knowing that the public's attention would be captured by a national heartbreak. The original subject of the song was Marilyn Monroe.

Could the voice here pass for 1981 Elton? I think so! Especially with the way he sings "Jean."

I presume thus is from the series they did in Australia for ch 9 as I hear stereo sound with the clapping but oddly the music was mono, bizzare !

Great to see Elton playing the RD-1000. It would be interesting to have him try that synthesizer on top (the JX-8P). Nonetheless, the string pad in the backgrounds most likely comes from the JX-8P MIDI'ed to the RD-1000. I love this sound combination.

I think its quite a nice combo. That was his usual set up in the late 80's. Ive always wondered how his synth kicked in halfway through the song. It was probably the soundguy that cranks up the volume on the mixer.

Didn't know you could do that. Was he controlling the JX-8P with a volume pedal?

Not necessarily. You can change patches with pedal switch, too. For instance, I just got the Roland D-70 today. It has a pedal switch input (in addition to sustain and volume pedal) and you can assign this switch to different things, but also to switching patches up and down. It's not needed in the studio, but can be useful for live performance when you want patches to change and keep playing with your hands.

I suppose its like what guitarists use on stage when they changing sounds when playing live. I do like JX-8P's i could midi one to my MK-20.

Precisely. And yes, the JX-8P is nice. But you don't find a Roland that is not nice from between 1981-1991

It’s amazing how well he sounds here. He has his old presurgery voice here, wonder what caused it to deteriorate even further after the surgery

@@dogpd3 He was still doing drugs at that time and started touring again in 1988.

I really don't think this is an appropriate song to be singing on Christmas Day! A Christmas song would have been much more fitting, ya think?
