Servicing the elver mop trap on the right bank of the River Bann at "The Cutts" above Coleraine, 18 June 2015. Many thanks to William from the Lough Neagh Fishermen's co-op. There is also a similar trap used at Portna sluice gates. This is a great design and is clearly effective - as evidenced by the catch here at 7pm on the third week of June! However we need to be putting in eel passes on barriers like this to allow the eels to help themselves. There is obviously also a role for methods like this and elver trap and transport in the interim, but eel passes are required. Filmed on a iPhone 6 plus.
