In June of 1953, Elvis Presley made his first ever recording directly to acetate at Sun Studios in Memphis, TN. This one-of-a-kind piece of music history was recently purchased by Jack White at auction. On February 26th, 2015, Jack White met with legendary music archivist Alan Stoker at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, TN to have this "holy grail of rock n roll" digitally transferred, so Third Man Records could repress it for the masses. A facsimile of this record, using this transfer without alteration, was available on Record Store Day, April 18th, 2015. A cleaned-up and re-mastered version of this recording is available as a 7" on Third Man Records.

Alan Stoker It's much better sounding than ever before. Have you guys ever tried using one of those laser record players to play old records like that? From what I've heard, they can bypass a lot of surface noise to get a clearer sound out of 78's.

mysteryjesus Curiously, I've actually heard laser gramophone players don't do so well with clicks because, unlike conventional players, they can't move dust out of the way when playing.

Phaneronic I am not certain about any source for your curiosity, but they actually exist. This is not a joke. They are manufactured out of Japan. They can actually read more of the groove than a stylus. Of course they have to be cleaned like this record was. They cost upwards of $10,000. The company sent me some samples of the difference between the laser and a stylus and it cleaned up the sound considerably decently. They are called elp. I think there are samples on the website.

I'd always hear the knock on Elvis of how he didn't write his own songs (as if Robert De Niro writes his own scripts) - anyhow, Dylan, Jack White, Lennon and many, many other great songwriters will explain the impact Elvis had on them and the world. You may not like Elvis' music, but his talent, musical and cultural impact are immeasurable.

Neither did Sinatra, Garland, Caruso, Pavarotti, etc, but they were still world-class singers and legends, so why do the idiots single out Elvis for not writing his own material? The fact that he was a master interpreter of the music he sang, and that he changed popular music and culture forever, should be enough - though I doubt if said idiots realize how much Elvis did in that respect. To understand it, they would really need to understand the music and culture of his time. It's easy to be blasé about such things when they've grown up surrounded by different types of rock music, but don't understand that it didn't always exist, and that it had a beginning - and only when they understand the times in which it exploded onto the world stage will they fully appreciate its initial impact.

I agree with Jack. Even through the pops and clicks you can hear Elvis voice clearly. I wish more of his Sun Studio recordings sounded that clear.

I LOVE ELVIS and I adore Jack White. I was wondering who bought this acetate on January 8th, 2015, which was auctioned off on what would have been Elvis' 80th birthday. I am SOOOOO grateful it was Jack White. My respect for him has multiplied ten-fold.

My wife Jo and myself were in Nashville in 1992 we visited Sun Records [not to be confused with the original Sun studio in Memphis] owned by Shelby Singleton. We had been given the contact number Rockin'Rex [London rock n roll record dealer], so I phoned them. After questioning about what records and artists we were interested in they said we could visit the next day. We spent most of the day in a series of broken down garages going through new old stock Sun records, we were walking on broken 78s - this was the stock they had bought from Sam Phillips. We were then shown around the new studio and it had floor to ceiling height cupboards all round, they opened those up to show us all of Sam Phillips tape archive. We were then asked to stand back while they opened a safe and they showed us that acetate. I said that I had heard that it was lost they told us that they had bought it from a childhod friend of Elvis and they had been in dispute for years with RCA about the ownership of the recording. They did say then that they had come to an agreement with RCA over it and it was due to be released shortly - it has taken a while since then !! Phil Whyte

Elvis cut the sole acetate demo of "My Happiness" and "That's When Your Heartaches Begin" on Saturday, July 18th 1953. It's considered to be the second most valuable recording of it's kind in the world, after a similar recording of Buddy Holly's "That'll Be The Day" by the Beatles.

Imagine holding and listening thee original record. Would it have been recorded on tape first of all in the studio at the time or was there a machine that recorded straight to vinyl? Elvis didn't record it in June 53 it was July 18th 1953.

It was released raw on the 78 version to both make it authentic and to avoid damaging any sound information. Listen to the first few songs on Anthology 1 by the Beatles and you'll see what I mean; their noise reduction at the time led to quite a bit of information being lost. When this got re-released as a 7-inch 45, crackle reduction and such was done.

I can't believe how good the recording actually is behind all that surface noise. He really sounds alive... also please use the cue lever, my soul hurt a little watch you lift the stylus by hand.

@@RoastBeefSandwich You would think so! But clearly that's not the case. Many scratches are left on records as a result of hand-cueing. It's silly to expect your shaky hand to rival a well-designed cue lever.
