Declan you are my hero since 1980... but Bruce Thomas is a beast and it's hard to forgive and forget he has been gone this long

I had no idea this song was written this early. Definitely prefer the B&C version, but it's cool to hear how it was originally conceived.

The past days Rock & Roll Hall Of Famers, The Attractions are essentially today's The Imposters. The only change is that Bassist Bruce Thomas, now 71, has retired from Rock & Roll musicianship and he's been replaced on Bass by Davey Faragher, 62. Elvis is now 65 as his drummer Pete Thomas. Pete was born 16 days earlier than EC and both were born in August 1954. Steve Nieve, 61, remains loyal to Elvis by making his awesome keyboards contributions to the group. He might be rock's greatest organist and he's no slouch on piano, synthesizer or any other keyboards instrument, either. The Most Dramatic shift from the days of "This Year's Model" in 1978 is that Elvis, a barely adequate rhythm guitarist when the Attractions group was formed is now a very competent lead guitarist and his improvement on the guitar over the years is nothing short of breathtaking!!

He’s acting innocent and proud Still you know what he’s after Like a matador with his pork sword While we all die of laughter With his turquoise pajamas and his motorcycle hat I hope your happy now Because you’ll soon be paired with that The King

This version of Peace In Our Time is by far the best I've heard, way better than the album version. Grimier, the intense vocal delivery, love the guitarwork. Love it!

Agreed. I cannot stand the Clanger-Winstanley "kitchen sink" production. Wasn't Punk and New Wave originally about stripping away excess?

Just incredible. These performances both far exceed the studio versions on the respective albums. And that's even with Elvis getting something caught in his throat during "Peace in Our Time".

This was how he imagined The Byrds would do it. And he was right..

it would have been better if Johnny Carson was the host (Joan Rivers substituted), but Elvis Costello & The Attractions were in fine form that night (9/12/1984) on The Tonight Show. Elvis was 18 days past his 30th birthday at the time (born: 8/25/1954). That makes him 65 years and 71 days old now on 11/4/2019. Damn it, where did all the time go?

By 1984, after releasing a handful of stinker albums, I thought Elvis Costello was a creative goner. When I caught this original broadcast, my mind was changed. I loved "I Hope You're Happy Now" and searched in vain for a recording. Happily, the song finally saw plastic two years later on the underrated "Blood and Chocolate."

Hey - what albums did you help release? Recording engineer? No weirdo, man, just genuinely curious.

Do you actually consider Trust, Imperial Bedroom and Get Happy!! stinkers of albums? Just curious, that's all.

I didn't realise until this month that Ms Rivers was still alive, or how much plastic she is made of. Regardless, Costello, still delivering the goods!

Yup, the B&C version is quicker and more brutal. But any live version of EC is a good thing.

he fucking means it - this is the version

Haha! EC and Pete are wearing the priest outfits they bought at that punk store. I feel like this might have become a running gag since they also wore them on Top of the Pops and I think the Whistle Test as well.

Yeah he was pretty loose with caustic unsolicited opinions about other musicians for many years, but I was just banned from commenting on his Facebook page after criticizing King of America.

I love EC, but that is lame.

Though many people swear by that album, I've always felt it's a tad bit overrated. I was disappointed when I eagerly bought it upon release. Strangely, Goodbye Cruel World has really grown on me over the decades..
