Saw him 3 times, last time a couple of years ago. He was faultless, as was his band. I was blown away, how could he be this good?.. .and then, he did this. He lives in Canada 😐 I love Elvis 🥺

yeah it is tough. I don't know how all these artists do it, like heavy metal singers. Scream singing for 3 hours a night on long tours. And opera singers. He is in fine voice on his new LP, but that is done with multiple takes and lots of breaks.

The new verse is clunky and lays the point home with a trowel. He’s removed my favourite verse to please reactionary idiots who don’t understand when something is being used with irony. A low point: it was perfect as it was, he should just stop performing it rather than editing it.

Not a fan of this stripped down version. Aside from the lyric change, without the piano is loses alot of the song's richness.

OMG, this is terrible. Has no one tried to tell him he can’t sing any longer or is he not listening? I can deal with old singers who sort of sound like themselves, but not someone this far off.

These comments need proper context. EC played over 250 different songs over a 10-night residency where he sang extensively some very taxing numbers from his Bacharach collaborations that take a toll on his voice when he sings on consecutive nights. He received glowing reviews of these shows from Spin Magazine and Variety. I went to five of these shows and hands down they were some of my favorite shows I’ve seen him in the last 40 years and 70 concert performances. I added quite a few videos from different nights and different types of songs where his voice is much stronger. I would challenge you to listen to my recording on 2/11/2023 of Peace, Love, and Understanding and compare his vocals to this song.

@@Hop-nr2nw Yes, you are correct that the 2/11/23 video of Peace, Love, and Understanding contains a much better rendition of one of Elvis's past hits. It is nice to know that he can still sing certain songs very well when they are tailored to his current voice and he is having a good night. That is not the impression he made with his above rendition of Oliver's Army This rendition was, for lack of a better word, sad. (And most of your subscribers are saying the same thing.) Anyway, thanks for providing this context. My guess is that he will continue to struggle with Oliver's Army because it does not lend itself to the soulful rendition of an older voice. It is a song of amazing power and enthusiasm that only the 24-year-old Elvis Costello knew how to muster.

@@pmbbmp Good points! I understand that older singers often cannot recreate the perfromances of their youth, but his peformance truly was dogshit. Apologies and refunds were in order!

Quite the contrary. These were my favorite shows of the 60-70 I’ve seen over the past 40 years. He played hundreds of songs he rarely plays on a standard tour concert and in a very intimate theatre. His voice cracked on a few songs, but he more than made up for it on many other tunes that he sounded very sharp. He clearly had a frog in his throat on this number. The man is almost 70, and at least he doesn’t mail in his concerts with a fixed, boring predictable 20-song setlist of greatest hits that are 40-50 years old. He continues to generate unique, quality new music and new interpretations of older songs. That overshadows a handful of bad notes over a 2+ hour concert event.

@@Hop-nr2nw I guess this begs the question whether it is wise to post Oliver’s Army from this particular show. As a major fan of Elvis Costello, you would not wish to post something that isn’t indicative of his current level of performance. I do agree that many of his other songs were handled better. But some people might only turn to this one and conclude he is not worth seeing anymore.
