Elvis live rendition of Hurt performed during his 21 June 1977 show in Rapid City has long been and remains my favourite version of the song. So to that end thanks for doing a reaction video to it Lisa. xx It is an excellent vocal performance and the lack of his customary reprise of the song, leaving the listener wanting more only adds to it's appeal. This rendition is however, from his show in Omaha, 48 hours earlier on 19 June 1977 when he really is in poor shape during that show. The cleverly placed brass arrangement also seems to add a melancholy poignancy to the already deep lyrics as does the short running time. The studio version was recorded on 6 February 1976 in Elvis' Graceland den and was released as the opening track of his Elvis Presley Boulevard album later that year.

The April 76 versions were very much like the studio version but when he added the reprise that's when he entered the power ending. My favourites from 76 are actually the first and last of the year. The first version in Johnson City on 23 March at the same tempo as the studio version and the Pittsburgh New Years Eve rendition when he finishes off by lying flat on the stage!!

The Johnny Cash song you're thinking of is his cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt". As for this song, the King's voice never betrayed him like the rest of his body. Still sad to thinknhe was only 42 at the time.

Hiya so this is very important .This version is not the one I know .this is totally from the Omaha 77 concert which was spliced together with the much better concert Rapid City. Check that version out its amazing . The Omaha concert wasn't great elvis wasn't at his best and the sound quality was too loud for the back up singers . This is not the concert to watch Rapid City a few days later Is much better

Did Elvis really dislike the Beatles as claimed in Elvis Found Alive? Not at all. Perhaps he was jealous and a bit intimidated. The Beatles had quite a successful reputation at that point, the bright hot-spot, Elvis would have liked to taste. The Beatles idolized Elvis, and Elvis secretly longed for their freedom to perform what they’d written, travel as they chose, and direct their own life decisions. Elvis admired and enjoyed their music, and had a desire to do more contemporary music he heard all over the world. Elvis was dying to try new, British Invasion rock in particular. Journalist Alanna Nash, the author of the books The Colonel and Elvis and the Memphis Mafia, said, “Elvis, who never really understood the Sixties, felt threatened by the Beatles since they were having huge hits at a time he wasn’t … when he was making formulaic movies.” The Colonel made certain contracts kept him locked into making films he detested, and the dominant Tom Parker kept a somewhat submissive Elvis, locked into the money-making machine of ballads and gospel-oriented music. As evidence of the Colonel’s tight controls, no press was invited, no pictures or video would be allowed, to be taken, no recordings to be made (would be worth a fortune if they had), and no alcohol or drugs of any sort. Must’ve been an eye-opener for many at this meeting. At the meeting, things were a bit stilted. The Beatles are ready to Party, and the shy Elvis was unsure how to handle anything. Everyone had similar questions, but Lennon rather awkwardly blurted out a stream of questions at Elvis, saying: ‘Why do you do all these soft-centered ballads for the cinema these days? What happened to good old rock ‘n’ roll?’ ‘Elvis was very quiet - that was my first reaction (John observed). He smiled a lot and shook hands with everybody.’ Colonel Tom Parker saw Elvis as a meal ticket and kept Elvis under his heel (as horrible as it sounds) as a money-making dynamic-for himself. And seemed to dominate Elvis steering him to the same ballads and gospel-oriented music. The Colonel began to break the jamming-up at around 1 PM (for music legends - rather early?), and suggested it was time for the Beatles to head home. What must the boys and Brian Epstein thought? At the night’s end, no matter the subtext, it was undoubtedly a huge thrill for the Beatles. And Elvis knew their success and music and was perhaps touched by meeting the future, just as the Beatles met their idol, the king. Can you imagine being able to say, ‘Yeah, I met Elvis one time’? I don’t think it was very much different for Elvis.” No photos were allowed, so this was likely a clandestine shot accounting for the very poor quality. You have not reacted to a performance from Elvis' last concert. This is June 19th 1977. He would go on to perform another show a day for the next 7 days, until his final show on June 26th. This June19th concert is arguably one of his worst, I would say his 2nd worst from the hundreds I've heard. June19th and June 21st 1977 were both recorded by CBS for Elvis in Concert, which would air in October 1977, a few weeks after his death on August 16th. I rate the June 21st version of Hurt around my favourites, this version here just does not do it for me.

Timi Yuro's version set the bar rather high. Elvis kind of asked her permission to do the song. Roy Hamilton did the song, as well as so many others. I like Vikki Carr's version the best.

Elvis was a fan of Timi Yuro and often was in her Las Vegas audience. I've been a fan of Elvis forever, but IMO Timi Yuro owned this song.
