Funny thing is, I thought he did this song originally: I heard his version before the original and just assumed it was his! I fully agree his cover versions were far better than the originals!

I have never heard a bad version of this song. Del Shannon really did something amazing to make a good song that has been done so well for so long through so many different people. Del Shannon's version, Gary Allan's, Elvis's, Misfits. all great.

Del Shannon wrote Runaway and his original version has never been bettered. Where was the falsetto Elvis. Del re did it for a TV series Crime Story which is really worth a look and a listen

Nice that Elvis mentioned Del Shannon's name at the beginning before singing Del's song. Not many singers were doing that back then. Another incredible live cover by Presley. RCA wasn't taping these for future release? If not, they must have been nuts. This is a good take but it's not commercial quality for a major record company like RCA. This is why releases and uploads like this are so special. Thanks Erich28592.

@lastrada52 The On Stage had a commercial release of Runaway. Col. Parker was taping just about everything off the soundboard of RCA. There is a ton of Material in the Vaults at RCA, that is unreleased.

@jhowej3 On Stage Album... had the commercial release of Runaway. Then a Box Set later had another version of Runaway, recorded 2 nights later. RCA recorded a lot of Elvis live in 70. Per Col. Parker.

a few years ago, I wrote the comment that: elvis says that he is sitting. So this recording. when it is made, there sat Del Shannon ... someone deleted my post, I do not know why. (I'm Hungarian peasant) Elvis: over there... Del Shannon's Runaway was the Wold's Best Song! (for me)
