I actually like the rehearsal one better. As big as the ending is in this one, it's actually more powerful in the rehearsal! To me, he's clearly tired in this version and you can see him struggling, which makes the earlier verses more poignant and moving but also somewhat tough to watch as he gives every last bit he has but can't quite extend that last operatic phrase as long or as powerfully as he did in the rehearsal.

Singers who hold back until the right dramatic moment in the song are the ones that KNOW what the hell their doing, rather than do their opera all the way through. It doesn't take a genius to know that, no mater how good you are. But it takes experience and total class. It;s about the song, the lyrics, and NOT about you. Elvis knew that, Linda Ronstadt knew... that. Other knew that. when the dramatic content of the song becomes lost because of the singer...ALL is lost and it's not artistry, it's noise. Of course one can also go too far over the top when you get to let loose at the end too, and you have to be careful to do it just right for correct amount of effect. There are singers today who get that, like Norah Jones, Lady Gaga etc...they get that and they are diverse talents. Oh how I wish Linda and Elvis could have done some singing together. Yes Elvis was an unparalleled artist and a master of song...a gift to us all.
