Great tut on a classic song. First time I played this song, my fingers discovered the opening hook with the hammer on in the key of F. Playing the much dreaded full barre, I just lifted the index finger and brought it down. It seemed natural and has a lovely deep resonance, but then you'd have to do the almost equally dreaded Bb chord!

I just got a Dove pro , now i'm thinking I should have got the Epi's version of guitar you have , does it's have more volume & bass you think as the common Martin / Gibson HumingBird/Dove shape? The Dove is thinner than I my other acoustics by 1/3". Maybe thats why it;s a little more "focused" sounding & not as as loud. Sounds good. Elvis got me into music I was into Elvis when my buddies were into KISS I liked the 50's stuff till I heard Back in Black that was it. Game over must play guitar was activated in my brain. lol

FUN FACT: If you listen to the original recording of this song, it has a bass intro, that is actually Elvis playing the Fender bass. Story has it that Bill Black, Elvis' original bass player, and Bill played stand up bass, Bill got frustrated with the Fender bass and threw it down. Elvis said "I'LL PLAY THE DAMN THING" (according to Elvis' drummer DJ Fontana ) and so he did. So, that's EP playing bass on this song.

In the chorus the part that ascends from an F to G isn't there an intermediary F#13th or diminished chord?

Just for trivia sake....Elvis plays the bass guitar (electric) on the record... the story goes bill black who played upright couldn't quite play it like Elvis wanted it done, so E played it and dubbed vocals separately. A rare example of an early Elvis record that had something dubbed.

sceno Do 1 minute changes. Go from G to C with a timer on for 1 minute. If you write down how many times you changed chords you'll be able to see the progress over time and youll be wondering what was so hard about it. Been playing for about 4 months now and doing 1 minute chords changes has helped me improve most. Courtesy of JustinGuitar (I would link the lesson but I'm on mobile)

why does C/F still work over "you don't like rockin' bands" you are singing different notes so shouldn't you need two different chords?

You teach us a substitute for the F chord but yet you still use the F bar chord throughout the lesson

Thanks for responding. I've seen another substitute by barring the first two strings at the 1st fret, then the G string at the 2nd fret and the D string at the 3rd fret. Will that work?

Nice singing and playing the verse, but how about playing and singing the bridge? Cuz, no, it is NOT an F# diminished you are showing. The notes you are playing and sounding (although not in this order) are B D# F# A - a B dominant 7th chord, in 2nd inversion with F# in the bass. Well, I suppose you could call in a D# diminished triad with an added major 6th "B". And no, it does not at all "sound terrible by itself." However, IF you played the "C" (as you mention) instead of the open "B" then it indeed would be a diminished 7th. But you aren't doing that. MOREOVER... Elvis is singing a D natural on that chord, and that chord you are teaching really sounds wrong under the vocal. I see different players playing different things at theis juncture, some not even changing from the "F" chord, one dude even playing a F# major chord, which really sounds wrong. A plain old D triad with an F# in the bass (thumb) here sounds way better than your chord with the voice. What is Scotty Moore playing on the original Elvis recording???? I dunno! ok, "Sage?"
