Great review. Personally, I never cared for Frank's "swing" style version of this song. It doesn't give the lyrics the respect they deserve. This is not a song to dance to, it's a song to reflect upon, about a man who's world has been shattered by a lost love, and the lyrics are deep and profound. Elvis' powerful and dramatic rendition does this song justice❗

You got that so well, bravo! Certain lyrics require a certain mood, decorum, and sincerity. There are certain songs you can't treat as just another pop or swing song, anymore than you can Zippity Doo Dah like a funeral dirge and call it sincere and heartfelt. imagine Sinatra singing send in the clowns like a swing number.... he would become a clown himself for doing it that way... this is why I hated Donna Summer's disco version of MacArthur Park, successful hit or not. It was not about the song, it was about her...and a cash register...

After Elvis died, my Mother was in a store and some slob said Elvis couldn’t sing. There also happened to be an Opera teacher from Ohio State University there as well. She told the guy who she was, and then told him he didn’t know what he was talking about. She said Elvis had tremendous range, and beautiful voice and could have been a great Opera singer.

Frank Sinatra's generation sang happily about broken hearts and without passion . It was Elvis himself who changed music... HIS PASSION AND EMOTION frightened them. "The power of his emotion was frightening!" Not to mention how his wiggling made them want him in jail!

I just listened to Sinatra's version of this song and wow couldn't be more different. Ol' blue eyes sings it almost like he is celebrating the breakup, now I'm a free man kind of feel. Elvis on the other hand is a tortured wounded soul, wondering the night without a goal. You can feel the pain Elvis puts into this song. The kind of pain this song is about, one of a man telling us of his broken heart. Excellent review, thank you!

This song is one of my favorites from this concert. It's sad that he didn't sing it more often. A few days before this concert he filed for divorce, because his wife left him and took his beloved daughter with her. I guess it wasn't easy for him to sing it, because of these deep lyrics. He sang it his way. Another good example is "Yesterday" from the Beatles. Elvis sang it his way and it feels like you hear this song for the very first time. Please give it a try! Thanks so much for your reaction! Btw Luciano Pavarotti once said.....Elvis could sing like me if he want to. But i could never sing like him......i wish i could

One of Elvis' greatest performances on this song. What you are watching here is a clip of something taken for granted today, but a big event in 1973, on my 17th birthday as well. It was a worldwide broadcast of the Aloha From Hawaii Elvis concert, going out live by satellite [gulp!] . It was unprecedented back in the day, except for the 1967 satellite broadcast that included the Beatles singing All You Need is Love." it is hard for those born later to imagine the experience of that moment in time with all the technology we have now. Yet as human beings, we still F-up all the time. To me, this was the last time Elvis stepped up to the plate and really delivered, after this early 1973 concert, for which he worked out and lost weight...after this it was all downhill for the next 5 years until his death. Just sad.

Hi Harri, as usual, I love your Elvis reactions. They are always so positive and enthusiastic. So, I took your advice and listened to Frank Sinatra’s version. His voice was impeccable but to me his lyric interpretation was MIA (missing in action). I took the opportunity to listen to a dozen or more other versions (there are in excess if a 100 English lyric versions);to compare to Elvis’ version. Firstly, I will admit to being biased! Strangely enough, from an instrumentation perspective Charles Boyer offered a very close interpretation and I know Elvis was a big fan of Boyer. The next closest I came to are Kay Stevens (very similar “marching” light drum beat and similar lyric interpretation in the first parts) and Engelbert Humperdinck (very similar interpretation during first half if the song and then the similarity dropped away). Elvis toyed with this song during home recordings in 1966, the year Sonny & Cher released there version. Their version hit #13 in Billboard charts in February that year. Listening to their version you can hear their influence on Elvis’ version but Elvis’ lyric interpretation in this 1973 version is streets ahead of S&C’s version. Here is a YT of Elvis’ home recording … Elvis is singing base, Charlie Hodge taking lead vocals, with Red West lending his vocals to the harmonies. The home recording version is quite different to this 1973 dramatic piece, much more sing songy. But the fact that he played with it in 1966 (but was not allowed to record it then due to his stupid publishing arrangements with Hill & Range) shows that Elvis genuinely liked the song and probably worked on his version in the intervening years. Enjoy this home recording kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZrNxlsuTyd3dgZc.html

Elvis was a big fan of tenor Mario Lanza. And for the song, 2009) "What Now My Love" Song Published 1961 Songwriter(s) Pierre Delanoë (Original French) Carl Sigman (English) Composer(s) Gilbert Bécaud "What Now, My Love?" is the English title of a popular song whose original French version, "Et maintenant" (English: "And Now") was written in 1961 by composer Gilbert Bécaud and lyricist Pierre Delanoë. The recurring rhythmic pattern in the background is the Boléro, an 18th century traditional Spanish dance perhaps best known for Maurice Ravel's reworking in 1928. English lyrics and the title were written by Carl Sigman

I love your comments about Elvis, and your peaceful voice and vibe. I'm French, and this song was created by Gilbert Becaud, a great French singer : "Et maintenant".
