I think this is a parody of the bad recording sound of the day. Nobody thought it would get any better.

As far as I know, this man was a really famous operage singer at the time of the recording, so this is obviously not involuntarily, but voluntarily funny. But why did the do that? Did he want to mock at the poor sound quality of the Edison phonograph?
