Kevin Hui and Andrew Maynard checking out the AIA HQ by Bryce Mortlock in 1967 in Canberra, Australia. The Australian Institute of Architects building in Canberra is a good example of modest mid-century architecture working with landscape in Australia.

Yes the berm is pretty awesome. Did you see at one point you can see a hedge next to the building (when I was talking about the column) and it’s been cut on an angle to fit the design too.

Oooh beautiful! I´m loving these Canberra episodes. What an amazing building, so subtle and yet full of clever details. No gutters in this roof seems a wise solution when you have a building beside eucalyptus trees, because the leaves, flowers, and fruits could easily plug the drainages. It´s clear what you mention about Asian and Nordic vibes, in such an amazing outcome.

Interesting to see the connections drawn to both Asian architecture and Aalto in this project as Aalto himself was inspired by Japanese design. Also, the doorway at 14:07 could be seen like the parti of the project, with all sides sloping down like the site's berms. Great video!

Ahh nice observations about the doorway. I think it also offers some visual privacy to the boardroom from the library and from the garden space too.

you know the work is good when you hear so many gleeful " oh yeahs'' " from the hosts 😀 the building is 54 years old and looks like it hasn't aged much ... which reminds of a Ray Eames quote ... " *What works good is better than what looks good, because what works good lasts* " (though, here the building is both)

One of my favourite Canberra buildings. No one knows about it. However, can you really not have a roof without guttering? Surely that's the kind of nonsense we've left behind! I have always loved those roofs, especially when it rains and it become a beautiful curtain of water.

Ironic how the ubiquitous Bunnings external glass table has found itself in the presence of the Institute of Architect’s headquarters in that main courtyard. From experience it takes a lot of effort and discipline to maintain a standard of smaller movable items to match the overall aesthetic of a building. Not an easy thing to keep up with.

Fantastic Kevin and Andrew Can you criticize tectonism with its parameterism and all types ex swarmism, foldism..etc is it necessary to architect to be assist With algorithm computing process ,because now students we don't know right way to chose even most universities are not yet adopting this algorithm saver (assistant) haaaaa Give us clearly scope about this movement even production side in architecture practice

It's a real shame that the interior lighting is so harsh. I wonder what the original solution was. The wide eaves of the roof are very cool but they deny the interior natural light. Skylights or lightwells would help make the environment more pleasant.
