If you are spending a lot of time in front of a PC, get yourself a good chair. What most people are missing is that beside a good chair you need a strong body core. Take care of your body, workout with weights and you won't have any issues with your back. I have used Herman Miller Aeron and now I switched to Steelcase Gesture. If you are a bit taller like myself, 6.3 ft, you will love Gesture.

I have the gesture, leap V2, Embody and the Aeron remastered! I felt the gesture gave a weird pressure on my tail bone after sitting on it for a long time and I didn’t like it’s lock in angle adjustments. it feels nice on the lower back but if you lean back in it be prepared to suffer neck pain if no headrest on chair. The Aeron, Either you hate it or love it lol. I have this chair with the atlas headrest. I find this chair good for tasking and really keeps your posture straight while working. If you try to slouch in this chair it will punish you, you have to sit in it the way it wants you to sit in it so be sure to select the right size A,B or C. The recline is amazing on it but if you lean back in this chair too much while working on a computer you will feel neck and upper trapezius pain, nonetheless it’s a great chair for tasking. It’s Quite nice to relax in with the headrest and Also it’s on the firm side. The lumbar pretty good! The steelcase leap V2 - amazing chair and highly adjustable. I love the way the seat pan moves with the back rest which really eases pressure on your lower back while keeping your upper back and neck supported. Arms are great and I love the wide back on this chair. I prefer this chair over the aeron and gesture for working, I find it more comfortable and bang for your buck. The Emody - I just bought this chair for 2k and I would have to say it’s the most comfortable out of all these chairs. I don’t feel any pressure on my lower back when sitting and if I wanna cross my legs on this chair and relax back it’s the best of them all. The recline motion is so nice with the high back. The only down side I would say for this chair is that it’s so hard to dial in to fit you, you have to sit there and fiddle around with it for days or weeks before you get it right. The back adjustment goes from lower back all the way to upper back but when fully dialed up it almost creates a hollow space in the mid back and rounds your shoulders but if you dial it down you start to feel the support mid to lower back and kind opens up the top of back if that makes sense, becomes not so rounded. I think the embody is better for gaming than it is for tasking. The atlas headrest should be good for this . If you’re on a budget I would take the safe bet and buy the leap v2 as I find it the most adjustable and it’s very comfortable. you really can’t go wrong with the leap v2. Anyways, hope that helps! Peace 🇦🇺

bought a gesture last year... i thought i probably made a mistake buying it but this video helps reassure i made a good choice and remove the buyers remorse. its such a customizable chair and i love how you can control everything from one spot on the chair. the arms are very very good also. my only complaint is the actual seat, takes some getting used to as its not a deep chair that fully supports the thigh and this is why i thought i made a huge mistake buying the chair. but ive actually learned how to sit in the chair to achieve the most support and comfortableness. its a great chair. btw im 5'11 in height and 150-155 lbs. the uncomfortableness comes from having the chair set too high off the ground and the small seat combined with the firm cussion would be applying too much pressure to the bottom of my thighs eventually causing problems with the legs blood circulation which would cause the discomfort. once i learned to sit more on the edge of the seat along with lowering the overall height the chair became way more comfortable to sit in for hours. im used to sitting in chairs that support the full thigh but the way this chair is, it supports your butt along with part of the thigh along with the lumbar area all together like a glove. once i learned how to sit in it it became alot better. Good luck

Have you guys considered re-reviewing the FERN now that you can have the lumbar system removed? It seems like that's what polarizes people the most and it's not mandatory. Also, it appears your FERN has the plastic body armwrests. You can also get them in aluminium which probably reduces the wiggle/lower quality impression.

The Fern’s headrest doesn’t have any adjustments, so don’t get it unless you are long enough in the upper torso to hit it just right. The seat is too firm and gives tailbone pain after a few hours. The backrest without lumbar support is okay, but coming from a person who hates lumbar support of any kind, I wish it had a little. I still didn’t have any lower back pain from it, just neck pain, because the peak of the headrest hits me in the middle of the back of my head, not at my neck. I’m still looking for my unicorn chair. Might try the embody.

Love my Gesture. I got the Era - Saffron fabric. Color isn't as vibrant as the website; it's a tad brown and sun bleached looking in comparison. Still looks good, just not what they show on the site. It's still soft, not scratchy like other people say. The Cogent 3d knit looks like it will be hard to clean with pets and crumbs. I've had it for almost 2 weeks now. Headrest is a must if you recline often. You don't notice it when sitting upright at all. The seat padding is very comfortable. Could be wider, but it works. I opted out of the Lumbar since I didn't want to deal with adjusting it when I want to recline. I've heard other reviewers say it hurt when they leaned back as it's a hard plastic lumbar. I'm surprised you guys glossed over it completely. I've had a bad back my entire life, and this is the only chair I can sit in all day long. I've been using a $280 Noble Epic gaming chair for the past 4 years. It's comfortable to lean back in and chill, but the seat is way too firm for upright use for more than an hour. Quality is great; it still looks brand new. But the Gesture blows it out of the water, as it should for the price. The only real complaints on the Gesture is that the seat doesn't slide out far enough for me. I'm 240lbs 5'11" with 32" inseam. I really wish the arm rests locked and had a wider adjustment. Luckily, the max width is barely where I need it to be, so it's usable. The armpad swivel keeps moving inward on me, and I'm constantly adjusting it. I could deal with the freemoving armrest, but the swivel on the pads needs a locking mechanism. I may try to glue it or maybe wedge something to keep it from pivoting. Even with those complaints, it's absolutely worth the money. I don't regret it one bit. I would probably get the Cobalt Blue if I had to do it again though. I'm afraid of my blue jeans staining the light red fabric over time. I could send it back and purchase it again, but they're on backorder for like 9 weeks. I'm getting a $50 discount for the color inaccuracies ontop of a $100 discount for a shipping delay 🤷🏼‍♂️

Very nice in-depth review and comparison. I first got the Embody, but the sounds it makes when moving in the chair are so annoying that I will actually send it back. (even the armrests) For a chair with this extreme price tag, I'm expecting not a single down-side at all. I will get the Gesture now, because not only does it cost 600€ less where I am living, but the more aggressive lumbar support and the optional headrest are both plus points for me. (besides you also said that the chair is great for static sitting, and is more silent than the Embody)

@Groknatarz
@Groknatarz 2 жыл бұрын
@@Rickenslacker I actually like it so far. At least on the same level as the Embody, but still 600€ less. The only negatives after 2 months of use: 1. the back only has 4 levels of tilt, and between lvl 2 and 3 is quite a big difference, so I had to go with lvl 2, as 3 is simply too layed-back 2. the seat, although adjustable to be very far out, still slightly feels as if I am slipping off, although I am not. It is probably because of the angle of the seat platform. And yes, the back on lvl 1 (no tilt) has a slight wiggle, but it is not enough to get the feeling of "falling back" that triggers your instinct to grep onto something.

This is a good review overall, but I did want to get into something that isn't really addressed. That tension control for the back of the Embody isn't really about the tilt. When it is tensioned fully, it actually makes the back flatter, and when turned the other way is more S shaped. So usually what you would do is start with it fully tensioned and sit. If the middle of your back feels unsupported and is making your line of sight go downward, you need to loosen it up. And then if your shoulders are coming away from the top and you feel like you're looking up, you went too far in the other direction. The intention is for it to evenly and gently support the actual curve of your own back. Do keep in mind that your curve can change over time (especially if you aren't used to an ergonomic chair), so it may need to be adjusted over time or even day by day depending on how your back is feeling that day. And if you're tall or short, that is going to affect how its curve interacts with your own curve. Like I think taller people tend to have that issue of the top of the back pushing their shoulders forward. I don't want to argue that it is the chair for you, since everyone is different. But if you do want to give it a shot, keep in mind the intention they are going for and actually give it a couple of weeks to try it out. And some people like the extra padding of the Logitech version (in the spine area) and some like the original version better (some find the original feels more natural). They did add some extra scrim foam to the normal Embody's seat pan in Feb of this year, so also keep that in mind if you try a floor model of the original and it feels too hard for you (or you feel the "pixels" pressing into you). Most people also find the regular Embody runs slightly cooler than the Logitech one due to the kinds of foam in each.
@btodtv
@btodtv 2 жыл бұрын
The adjustment that you are referring to is independent back angle adjustment. There is no tension involved and the shape of the back doesn't flatten or become more S shaped when you turn the knob. The shape stays the same. The only change is the angle at which the entire back sits in relation to the seat. -RB
@ShawnFumo
@ShawnFumo 2 жыл бұрын
@@btodtv Hmm, I guess what I was looking at was misleading. I just read the actual white paper and I think you're right, though its reason for existing still has to do with the back's curve. It's regular reclining keeps the hips in a similar orientation to the back while you recline, to keep the support the same. A person with a more curved back would naturally want a wider angle between the seat pan and seat back, to help contact it better and be able to look forward. So you need that separate adjustment. So their idea is that that adjustment combined with the dynamic support of the pixels on the back will accommodate a range of back shapes without necessarily changing the curve of the seat back itself. So apologies for misinformation, though maybe it's still good to point out their reasoning does have to do with accommodating different back shapes. For those curious, here is the white paper: www.hermanmiller.com/research/categories/white-papers/promoting-healthy-movement-and-natural-alignment/ "Back support is also a result of the Backfit adjustment. It allows the flexible, segmented backrest to be tuned, or fitted, for an individual-across the spectrum of people’s S-shaped back profiles-to achieve postural equilibrium appropriate for postures associated with technology-based tasks. The thoracic support zone can be adjusted forward or rearward through a 9.3-degree range within which a sitter will find his or her neutral, balanced body posture with head balanced over the torso and eyes aimed at the horizon. This position also becomes the starting point for the sitter’s visual display. With the Backfit adjustment, the sitter rotates the entire back rearward or forward. A sitter with a curved back rotates it rearward, effectively providing more room for the thoracic curvature. This brings the head and eyes rearward of the pelvis to where they need to be to allow the person to effectively gaze slightly downward to the center of the visual display (rather than at a more pronounced angle). A person with a flat back brings the backrest forward to also gaze downward at his or her display-rather than looking over and beyond. In effect, the Embody chair not only accommodates spinal curvature, it embraces it. / See Figure 7 /"

Just want to say something about the Haworth Fern. My chair at work is the Haworth Very, It shares the same arm design. The difference is my chair has the metal arms, but, The Fern can be purchased with the metal arms too. I'm 220 lbs and tend to lean, I found my haworth work chair arms to beat my HM Embody chair arms in comfort. Also something ill say that's important is if your a long term sitter or someone who gets up often during the work day SHOULD be an important deciding factor. The Embody chair is awesome for someone who is stuck at the desk for 3+hours at a time (I use mine for gaming). While at work im in and out of my chair all day. I do find that after about an hour im leaning from one side or the other (putting those comfortable arms to work!) but for short sits at the desk 30mins-2hours the haworth is great. I also got my fully loaded Embody brand new (open boxed) for $1000, and the Fern can be found for about $599 if you search. so, If you can afford $1000 id say Embody but if you can only afford $599 i'd buy the Fern. OR for $400 look at a 2nd hand Haworth Very. I give my Haworth tons of abuse at work for over 5 years and it's still solid.

First, the chairs arrived broken at home ( the button to up/down was broken ) , I contacted the support and they sent me a new chair ( in 4-5 days ). Then I tested the chair , all options are really good ( carpet , 5 positions for the recline etc ) we can feel the quality. But as you said the seat is good if you like a ferm one. For me after 8h on it , it was a little too much But the biggest problem for me was the confort of the backrest. The feeling is not so bad, but the kind of "grid" they inserted , often it gave me some pain after few minutes. So finally I asked for a refund and think I will try the gesture. Bought a Gesture after watching this based upon the reviewer's comments that it placed near the top of the field in terms of seat comfort. However, as someone with pretty severe hamstring/sciatica pain, I'm finding it just as uncomfortable as the Posture-Fit Aeron at my office or the 2020 SecretLab I was hoping to replace at home. While firm seats may be great for people without such injuries, I'm finding it virtually impossible to sit in any of these chairs for more than about 15 minutes or so. What I really need is something that I can sink into like my La-Z-Boy recliner and glider (in which I experience no pain whatsoever), but yet still sit up at a desk to be productive. I've tried a number of seat pads, including the 2" thick Purple, but the extra height ends up defeating the lumbar support and cutting off the circulation behind my knees. Do you have any recommendations on a well-designed office chair that will treat my back as well as a Herman Miller or Steelcase without making my legs feel like they are on fire? i.e. Something with a truly deep and soft seat cushion? Preferably one that I can lower the armrests out-of-the-way (like the Gesture) so I can sit nice and close? EDIT: If it matters in terms of chair size, I'm 6'1" and 185 lbs.

@@lofasz3328 So when slouching your upper back is still well supported but your lower back will obviously suffer, I just tried doing that. I'm not a sloucher though, what i do like doing is having one foot under the thigh and then twisting my back in the direction away from the foot that is crossed under. I'll do this in one direction for awhile then switch when it starts to ache a bit to balance out. What this causes me to do is put a lot of pressure on one side of the backrest and start somewhat falling out of the chair because of how thin the backrest is and not really being designed to just have half of it being pushed into. The racy chair actually made doing this easy since the bolsters pushed me back into the chair and i could lean into them. I think the gesture would suit that habit of mine much better. So, for the very latest versions the difference is this: The gaming version has a more squishy foam in the seat pan, while the regular version has a harder scrim foam. The gaming version also has a strip of foam in the back in the spine area above the hips. That foam in the back was sometimes pretty loud (making a squeaking or crumply sound) but is supposed to be better as of a month ago. The regular version added the scrim foam to the seat pan in February or so. People say the gaming version is a bit hotter (despite the claims about it having "cooling" foam). The regular version also has more fabric and color options (especially if you call or use a re-seller to get one of the fabrics that isn't in the online picker). And the gaming version has those ridges in the fabric that some people may or may not like depending on how sensitive they are. You also could order a regular Embody with no arms, while taking arms off the gaming version might void your warranty if they could tell you did that and put them back on.

The curves just like on the leap v2 is whats killing it. shittiest design. lumbar too extreme that in the lowest part it even curves away from you even if you try to sit as close as possible. And then theres the other curve in the top that curve too much away form your shoulders.. look at him sitting in it even.. the top part with his shoulders have no contact. And combined with never really being able to fully sit up straight (gesture and leap v2) because the backreast in the top always has too much of a recline angle.. not comfortable. The embody made it really felt effortless to sit really up straight without noticing it. Only problem was the hard un padded lumbar on it. sadly. Wish the companies would combine real comfort with more cushion around all these ergo features etc. and really bring in both better together.

@Le Justicier du Net as far as I heard HM themselves confirmed that if you use the atlas headrests on those chairs that they would not void the warranty in case of breaks of the frame or other damages. But those headrests cost another 200bucks

My biggest gripe and deal breaker with Steelcase is that the cushions are about as good as the $99 Amazon chair my GF has if not worse. You can have all the great engineering and quality parts, but if one of the most important if not the most important makes it feel like I'm sitting on a wood plank then it's an instant avoid imo The most comfortable office chair I have sat in was easily the embody for comfort, but I opted for a UPLift desk over getting the embody a couple years back and honestly regret that because I all but quit using the standing feature within a few months lol.

I’m so confused now :( most people say (including this vid) that the gesture has a great seat??? Is it really that bad? Ughhh
@Shintsu2
@Shintsu2 7 ай бұрын
The gesture does have a very flat seat. I loved everything else about the one I tried, great headrest, great arms, but the seat is why I returned it. It offers little support, so I completely agree. I give up on Steelcase, tried a Leap V2, Amia, and Gesture and was not happy with any of them. I used a Steelcase chair for at least a decade so I'm shocked I couldn't get comfortable in any of their chairs.

I hate that my embody never feels like it sits up completely straight. I always feel like I'm leaning backwards too much even on the most upright settings. I absolutely love the embody seat though, and the arms are nice too
@coolvinay

I recently tried fern and even that was not perfectly upright, there was a slight bit of recline to it that takes away the alert upright position that helps me think when coding. I found Soji very nice and upright though, but the recline was a bit off and was not deep enough when fully reclined. Have you tried fern? If yes, how does the upright of it compare to embody?

Did you end up finding an alternative chair? Just got my embody and running into the same issue. If I tighten everything I'm upright but still maybe a few degrees reclined....not sure if it's because I'm used to being hunched over in my crappy old chair I've used for 10 years or if the Embody just isn't right for me. I may have to look at a another chair and from the review in this video the Gesture doesn't seem too great at it either. I might look into trying out a Zody

have had all 3 of these, as well as a few of the mid-range ones like autonomous and the storm mk2. nothing even comes close to the embody. the pixelated seat alleviated all back pain and fatigue while sitting. i honestly don't understand why every company has caught onto flexible backs that move with you, but still pair it with a solid plastic bowl/pan with some foam on it for a seat. do your body a favor and just get the only chair worth anything, the embody. you can thank me later.

One thing I just never see in these reviews is the height of the chair seat off the ground. It's an issue that's important to me, I am not a 6' giant, I am merely 5-11, but I also have really bad knees, and if the chair seat is too low, then after an hour or two my knees no longer want to straighten, as well they feel like they have a swarm of hornets or a dentist's drill inside them. I have a draftman's stool at the breakfast bar, where I don't have that problem, but all the other chairs in my house are too short. 55cm absolute minimum, 60cm is better ... but no review mentions this.

The Embody has low, standard, and high seat heights but you'll have to email them to custom order the non standard. You can also order other fabrics in their catalogue but not shown on the default website selector. I also got my base in polished aluminum for a more premium feeling look...don't like any of the current default bases.
