As many of my youtube users requested I want to introduce an informative video that shows a particular way to do embossing and debossing on upholstery leather(automotive/furniture)
For this demonstration I am using a simple 'tyre vulcanizing patching press'. To perform these designs the main idea is to lightly heat/soften the leather material just enough to let the metallic die (aluminum/bronze/steel) engrave the figure on its surface. It means Could I heat the leather surface with a 'heat gun'? or other means? ...Yes of course!
For this demonstration I am applying force to the die against the leather material with a 'bolt and a nut mechanism', but you could use another mechanical system or a hydraulic system instead.
I hope you find this video useful and much more as a way of inspiration to do your own mechanism for your leather projects!
Cesar

If I would do particular jobs the shop would not be so clean. I know, a lot of stuff is accumulated such as scraps of vinyl, leather, metal seat frames, springs, dust from the carpets, foams, etc. Fortunately, I only post some youtube videos. If too much job, I would recommend a person in charge to clean the shop, besides as a helper to disassemble car seats, to thoroughly clean the areas where we would work on installing carpets, headliners, etc. Thanks for watching the videos! Gracias y saludos
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 6 жыл бұрын

I came across these 3 videos when they were newly uploaded then could never find a way to search for them again. I'm purely a hobbyist leatherworker just wanting to find a way to do some cool embossed animal heads on the flaps of my hunting pouches. Is there any kind of setup you would recommend for someone with no intentions of doing commercial work but want professional results? When I look at embossing presses, they are either thousands of dollars or dozens of dollars. I will never be able to justify the expensive ones and I don't know if I should trust the cheap ones. Any advice?

I am going to pass on to you the same information some time ago I gave it to a car trimmer who asked me about it regarding the small press and metal dies. The small press I have is a tyre patch tool (vulcanizer) I adapted it to embosss leather. Another better options that work with hot plates: A rubber vulcanizer might be useful to emboss/deboss small figures on leather. It would not need much adaptation: www.amazon.com/Arbe-Machine-Vulcanizer-Jewelry-Casting/dp/B00DVT3UF4 www.ebay.com/itm/ARBE-Deluxe-Vulcanizer-Model-VD-101-MOLD-VULCANIZER-WORKING-CONDITION-LONG-ARM-/191994147879 A stamping machine:www.dhgate.com/product/hot-foil-stamping-machine-leather-debossing/387672168.html There are more sophisticated machines that work with radio frecuency waves (same as a microwave oven) to heat the leather/vinyl material to be embossed. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pbWbkr2a1pi2goE.html I cannot recommend but I can provide you some information. There are specialized manufacturers of embossing dies you could get in touch: illinoisengraving.com/ www.fandsengraving.com/index.php?pn=1 www.locre.com/ www.augustinedie.com/magnesium-dies-hot-stamping www.dies-direct.com/ These professionals would give you the appropriate assistance.

Hola, buenas noches.
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 5 жыл бұрын

Hi Peter, As I already mentioned on a former comment these metallic dies/stamps to emboss/deboss on leather are mostly done with CNC machines(computarized milling machines) which read a pre-made drawing of the required design. They should have the right hightness to only touch or emboss what is required. Laser cutting machines are also used for this kind of engraving tools. You should do your own research to find the manufacturers or suppliers in your own area. Please, watch an example: www.stpaulengraving.com/custom-engraving-steel-stamps-dies.html

@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 6 жыл бұрын

Thank you so much for these videos ! I have a question, probably with your creativity you can answer. What If I don’t have any of the tools in this clip to emboss , Do I have to soak the leather in warm water , the take a shape I have made from resin or clay with pva glue then form the warm wet leather or leather heated with heat gun around the shape and tool the leather with sculpting tools around the shape, and once formed fill in the back with silicone to hold the shape ? I really want to do this but don’t have the budget to spend on metal dies or any heavy stuff... just regular things around the house...?
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 5 жыл бұрын
Hello, I have never tried to soak upholstery leather in water to give a shape. I know it works on those thick vegetable tanned leathers by using sclupting tools. But, I do not discard the method you are telling me. As we know only experimenting we could say if it works. I only would say to make these embossed figures in upholstery leather requires a lot of force to give shape.
@deepdiver849
@deepdiver849 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I realize. Actually I don’t want to use veg tan leather . I wanted to use the leathers you use... that is why I asked if you need to soak these types of leather too, as it is done with veg tan ! Thank you so much for answering! So force is the answer ! I just didn’t want to ruin the leather ( chrome tanned ) which I have by soaking it to emboss ! You are a star ! :)
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 5 жыл бұрын
@@deepdiver849 I understand much better your question. If you would wet just the area you are going to impress the figure the heat would then dry it, and nothing would be ruined. I have done some tests with a liquid shoemakers call it 'softener' (it contains some water) I have applied it on the small area for the 'metal dies'. The water also helps to soften the leather and after drying becomes stiff and the figure is well formed. Heat and force are the keys. And, I think water would help but the application should be done on the small are to work on. Thanks so much for watching the videos! Welcome to this channel anytime!

Estimado Cesar.

If I am right, you are referring to a piece of hard cardboard (shoes' insole cardboard) over the hot plate. It helps to even the aluminum surface and avoids any distortion due to small dies.

@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 6 жыл бұрын

Check the difference of current video 1 and video 3: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p7J1Zdqcu7m3inU.html Regarding the Tandy Leather machine it is an option I have found on internet. You need to do your own research. I am not recommending to buy it. It seems to me it is a good option, because it has different useful attachments, such as the thermostat to keep control of the temperature, a removable plate to put the dies in position, etc. I think it is good for small embossing as my machine is. Perhaps, you could get some advise from the Little King Goods channel. The leather artisan of the video has got one. It would be advisable an opinion, if possible. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r5dnddZhz73Keqs.html I hope this information helps.

Did you make your dies by hand or thru a precision machine shop? What is that brown hard board I noticed you used it on your work table and as first layer on your heat plate Bartoli something? Ive never heard of it and was curious if we have a similar product in the states here?
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 7 жыл бұрын
Definitely the dies should be done by a CNC milling machine. I like to do some of my stamps just for enjoyment using auto body filler or epoxic resins, but they don't last much time. They should be done in metal of good heat conductivity..it could be aluminum, bronze, magnesium, zamac, etc. The hard cardboard (shoe's insole material) I put over the hot plate is useful to level the metallic surface, besides as an absorber to avoid my stamps directly touch the metal plate. This cardboard has some resistant to heat...not too much heat because it could burn. A heat resistant hard rubber could be used instead.

Hi Cechaflo can I ask where I can purchase some of those stamps ?
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Linbert, You would need somebody who works CNC router/milling machines. These 'stamps' are made in bronze, aluminum, steel, zamac, etc. . The CNC programmers and operators start working with a picture or figure the customer requests. These specialists turn it in a CAD/CAM software card which is plugged into the machine computer slot to work automatically. Regarding your question, I think you have to find out in those shops that work doing 'dies/molds' for jewelers, graphic designers, printers, etc. I cannot recommend a special place due to I'm still doing a slow research on those machinists here in Mexico where I'm located.
