i love king's backstory, i think it's just so relatable. the isolation you can experience at university is real, and coupled with the expectation of this being the "best time of your life" it just gets worse and worse. the way he found himself through running, and through that team, is such a hopeful message.

The water boy is part of Kansei University's short distance team. It's mentioned that they volunteered to be support staff in an earlier episode. The short distance runner struggled to pace Kurahara. Sure, he was trying to talk while running, which isn't easy but damn... Kurahara is a demon.

"Watch me, Watch what you believed in" Ahhh the empowerment. This is a very important character moment for Kakeru. Someone had believed in him. People had assumed him before. Kakeru will win the race, he'll beat everyone. They kept assuming. Haiji believed in him. He knew Kakeru could be a team player and eventually a leader. Watch how Haiji asked for Kakeru's opinion during the Hakone race placement episode and allowed him to communicate his thoughts clearly and confidently. Kakeru have dropped couple of gold lines by the end of the series. "It's because we're viewing it together. I doubt we would feel the same if we were alone." "You probably will hold the record for only 10 minutes or so" "What does it feel like to fall in love? I'm in love too". Haiji believed in him completely even more than his running capability. Now it's time to prove it. Kakeru is not just a exceptional runner. He has conquered himself already. He'll beat himself too. That's who he is running against. Himself. He is not running alone. He is running with the wind.

The final scene in EP22 was a production worthy of the anime's original title name (The Wind is Blowing Strongly（風が強く吹いている）). Kurahara's amazing runs are described as "black bullet" in the original novel. He is in a dimension where the sound of the wind is so loud in his ears, and all the scenery is passing by in an instant, so pleasant that he never want to stop running again, but he can only savor it alone.

i dont think prince was talking about the race, when he said his efforts were futile. but rather seeing how kakeru was running and how beautiful it looked, he saw that as true running. whereas what he and everybody else was doing until now is just walking fast.

I had a conversation with an ex-F1 driver once and he was talking about that moment of being in the zone and that "clarity" you experience during it. He talked of doing full speed laps around Brands Hatch circuit and being able to see individual people in the crowd rather than them being just a blur as he sped past the stands. Very much like how this episode showed Kakeru's experience I would imagine.

Hi Sarah, I noticed that Run with the Wind is approaching its climax and I feel like you would wanna continue watching more anime series on this channel. I would like to recommend you one of the most underrated "sports" anime that has breathe takingly good animation, a refined story and a downright gorgeous plot. It's called "Tsurune" and currently has two seasons of 13 episodes each. The first one being called "Tsurune: Kazemai Koukou Kyuudo-bo". I would say it's preferable to watch it blind but I will tell you this much- Kyuudo is a Japanese Martial art similar to Archery but there are a few more steps intertwined into shooting the arrow. People often get a bad image from the synopsis because it's practically archery and they think, " Oh how can archery be any good to watch " but trust me when I say this, it has such a good goddam story that when they go into their battle mode, you can feel everything and when I say everything, I MEAN EVERYTHING because KyotoAnimations did such a fantastic job animating it just like they do with every one of their animes. As a sports anime geek, I would appreciate it if you could react to it and make it a bit more known because it truly deserves some more recognition. I have always loved your reactions and I am very interested in seeing you react to something a bit more non-chalant

The whole series has so many tear jerking moments for me but King-san's monologue is the one that strikes me the hardest. Among the introverts of Chikusei-so / Kansei U Team (Kakeru, Prince & King), King-san is the one who don't have the people he always hang with. Kakeru has Haiji, Prince hangs with the Twins but King-san kinda falls through the gap. Regardless, King-san found the group of folks he truly attached to and he can comfortably be himself and let him shine for this once a life time event. If you think about it, King-san is a small dude (only taller than Shindo), kinda plain looking with no particular talent. He does have a inferiority complex and it shows in his body language (which differs from Prince's shrinking violet body language). Not to mention the dorm is packed with good looking people. Even Nico-chan Senpai has a lot of fans for being that gruff looking Oni-san (Big Brother) of the group. Its also quite cute that Nira is really fond of King and always bug him (see the summer training episodes) "We are counting on you..." That gotta be the first mental boost for Kakeru. Its so heart warming as King-san had stick his neck out for Kakeru when it came with Sakaki. BTW, Miura Shion Sensei (the author of the novel) is a fujoshi and she is into that BL stuff! Another thing Sakaguchi "King" Yōhei got my attention is that I pretty much look like him. Except for I am twice his size (190cm & 108 kg). I play basketball a lot but cursed with poor leaping ability and short arms/small hands. It makes me feel smaller than I should have been. BTW, go to Pixiv and find this page en/artworks/82729480. Its a drawing of the Senpais of the group. Said person also draw a lot of Haikyuu fan art.

The thing a lot of people don't realize about running, is it's just like any other sport where you have good days and bad days, and days when you're entirely in the zone. I've had my fair share of runs where you feel exactly what Kakeru is feeling, where you're aware of everything but at the same time its just a passing blur where only running mattres. It's truly a special feeling, and it reminds me of when you see Kageyama in Haikuyuu in the zone where everything is perfectly locked on.

I see that we're recommending possible options for your next reaction. I'm going to go a little into left field with this one, but it's still technically a sports anime, so I think it fits. "Chihayafuru" is a (currently?) 3-season series about high school girl Chihaya Ayase and her quest to become the best competetive karuta player in all Japan (and to build her high school's team while she's at it.) Karuta is a kind of poem card matching game similar in some ways to memory, but there is a surprising amount of physicality to the play. The characters are amazing and the game play, strategies, and rivalries are engaging, even if you're not up on the poetry the game is based on.

When I first watched this years ago I literally said out loud " damm he's having the mother of all running highs" rewatching now yep I still Stand by that lol

Just adding my support. 5:03 Just a fun (?) fact, but the kanji ｢寺」in 遊行寺 (Yugyouji) means temple, so "Yugyouji Temple" is kinda redundant. 30:17 I feel so bad for the "water boy".💦 He was just doing his job. He's probably a volunteer, too.😅 15:38 Just want to mention this scene since no one else probably would, & I feel bad for Sakaki being called a "villain".😟 All this time, Sakaki was filled with resentment & anger towards Kurahara for what happened in HS. & since in his eyes, Kurahara kept proving himself over & over to not have changed from the self-focus-visioned, non-team player person with anger issues by the way he'd reacted to his taunts, it probably felt like Kurahara was just flippantly returning & "playing team-mates" without having reflected on or acknowledging that he wronged others (however unintentionally) with the incident. This in turn probably made it feel like something he aspired for & holds dear was being insulted, & so Sakaki felt the need to deny Kurahara & his team. Yet with that scene & facial expression, you can tell that he saw a definite change in Kurahara. Perhaps all he wanted was a simple show of actual remorse (I don't think we ever heard any words of apology from Kurahara, at least on screen). He may be a jerk, but I feel Sakaki is a well written antagonist (& it was a great performance by his VA: Kawanishi, Kengo).

Sarah, if you're thinking about watching another sports anime next, i would highly recommend "Ping Pong The Animation." It's very different stylistically, but tackles a lot of incredible themes and is a masterpiece in it's own right. If you wanna branch out into something other than sports anime, that's great too! I love hearing your character and theme analyses

Since we're doing recommendations, if you don't have something in mind yet I recommend considering Ping Pong the Animation, someone already said it and I recommend it too. Very short, 11 episodes, and very well-regarded and unique.

I feel identified so much with King. That, wants to be with people, living things, but no feeling like capable or feeling afraid of rejection! My life! Hopefully, I`m growing better with that. I watched this anime years ago... But I not remember what or who Kurahara love is! I`m going to re-know here!

Since you've already watched Spy x Family and Demon Slayer. I want to recommended some to watch: 1. Silver Spoon 2. Barakamon 3. Assassination Classroom 4. Dr Stone 5. Tsurune (japanese archery) 6. Yowamushi Pedal (cycling) 7. Bakuman (this shows you how manga are made and the competition among manga author within industry) 8. Space Brothers (this one is a long show tho) Those are my comfort shows that made me relaxed but also motivated me at the same time.
