You display a good set of skills as a musician & instructor,on another web page on tab,.no mention was made concerning the proper tuning ( droped d) which you made clear from the start. Jorma says this is a "right hand" piece of music. much like a piano, you are doing two different things at the same time. thumb is alternating bass and the rest is melody, much of it counterpoint, on top. this is as good a instructional as there is, thank you for posting, it is a nice contrast to Jorma's. If it is any consolation to anyone out there frustrated, even with the official tab this song is not easy. But what a great learning opportunity.

Maybe it's because i come from a metal background, but i prefer to know each exact note and when it's struck. I don't care if you don't think it's helpful. I'm going to take the amazing slow downer and figure out your exact strikes whether you like it or not! >=]

@Sappiest ~ Hi, did you make progress on this? The way to get on top of this alternating thumb picking and start to nail this piece is to spend hours at a time going at it...slow the tempo WAY down. I recorded the song, then slowed the recording to half speed and was able to figure it out by ear though I still don't play it as fast and smoothly as the original....maybe if I start practicing it again regularly... Peace.

@neutrolino nah, i never made much progress on it. i'm honestly not to good at learning things by ear and tend to depend on vids and tabs and because it's not THAT big of a song, the majority of the stuff out there is a bit inaccurate. i wish i had the will to continue, but it's honestly to difficult for me, at the moment. by far, one of the most beautiful songs i've ever heard, and the only one that almost made me cry.

The trick to this song is not the notes-although having an accurate transcription to work from is important...the trick is in the dynamics-I believe Jorma always uses a thumbpick at the least to perform this tune.I believe he also used some metal fingerpicks on the index and middle fingers for the recording and on many live performances-this is EXTREMELY important! The dynamics happen chiefly because of these fingerpicks...

Double Dose was/is an excellent album.

Also by that I mean, if you can't play like this, you need to persevere - not that this guy needs to improve, it is awesome !

@CarcharodonMusic It doesn't sound the same with your nails...plus your nails will disintegrate on steel strings. The plastic thumbpick and metal fingerpicks are key. The guy that made this video has no clue how to play this song correctly.
