EMERALD AIRLINES | A stormy night flight Glasgow to Dublin with Aer Lingus

Ryanair may be cheaper and offer more flights, but I was keen to try out Emerald Airlines, operating on behalf of Aer Lingus, between Glashgow and Dublin. And what a superb little flight it was, despite the stormy night and turbulence.

I am all for Emerald Airlines. Recently I had a medical emergency, and flew from Dublin to Glasgow. I cannot fault the Cabin Crew, they were amazing, and caring. As you mentioned, I was lucky to have amazing weather, you could see so much! Full points to Emerald Airlines ( Aer Lingus), I will never forget your kindness to me.

Thanks for another great video Scott. We flew with Virgin recently and they made a very big deal about filming before we took off - it was right up there with smoking in the toilet. It seems to be the latest thing for airlines to get ar5ey about. I agree with you about Dublin's arrangement with US Immigration - we live in Ireland (up north) and it's an excellent facility as you land in the US as though you're on an internal flight - straight to baggage and out the door!

I flew on Emirates just before Covid, and when I boarded the flight and started walking down the aisle, I was nearly rugby tackled by a flight attendant warning me not to film inside the cabin. I can see their point - no one wants to do their job and suddenly find themselves on KZfaq.

We flew to NY last year and chose the connection via Dublin with Aer Lingus (Shamrock) from Leeds. ATR is a great aircraft and we did have clear skies so plenty to see. Far less stressful than a trip over the Pennines to Manchester, but clearing US customs in Dublin made it so much easier on arrival. Very well orgainsed, took about an hour from disembarking the connecting flight to having a Guinness in the bar, and the US officers were far friendlier than you get in the US. After a 6.5 hour transatlantic who wants to spend hours in a US clearance queue and be dealt with by a miserable individual! We walked off the flight at Newark, no checks whatsoever, bags collected (also quick as it was an A321 Neo from Dublin, so not too many passengers) and were in our hotel transfer taxi within 30 minutes. It was also a bonus to pick up a business class fare for the return for £300. Connection back from Dublin also seemless, about an hour to wait. Only downside is all connections to UK leave within about an hour, about 8 flights and only one small area to wait.

Although I live just a 20 minute walk from Glasgow Airport, most of my flights are from Edinburgh. There's more choice, more competition, and fares are much lower than Glasgow. I always fly Aer Lingus Gatwick to Dublin and back. The flights are generally more punctual as AL just shuttle back and forth whereas I had a RyanAir from Dublin that was delayed because of snow in Szczezin, the legroom is more, the flight is a lot more relaxing (they are not trying to sell you lottery tickets and so on), T2 in Dublin is much quieter, and the cost difference with 10kg checked in on AL is not that much.

Sorry, Dublin is in Ireland which is NOT part of the the UK. Ireland became independent in 1922 but at they time they agreed a common travel area so you don’t need a passport legally to travel if you are an Irish or British citizen. Other citizens will require a passport. Also airlines generally only accept passports as ipId. (Ryanair ) definitely so it’s wise just to bring your passport anyway.

Even this positive little feature and the excellence of Emerald could not conceal just what a lousy airport DUB is. Its poor planning and lack of moving walkways makes it a nightmare for anyone with even light mobility problems and it is insensitive to families with small children. The CEO recently quit before he was forced out. Conditions and pay for staff do not help to make for good public interaction because morale is generally low. Also it is several miles from the city centre and transport links. Even discounting Covid, tourism from N.America comes in through Shannon or Belfast International.
