Hello all,
Here is a video about the Beryl Emerald and some "imitations". I made an introduction with a bit of theory and what is important to know about imitations, synthetics, etc. I give you few advices and I talk about treatment and synthetic stones and I give you my point of view about how to choose an Emerald.
In the middle part, I show some stones that can be used as imitation on the market and I give you the prices. On the side of those stones I show you 3 natural Colombian Emeralds no treated I bought here in Mexico and I will talk about it. Those 3 Emeralds I had in the lab few months ago where part of a set of 18 pieces set in a collar sold for the gold in a pawn shop.
In the last part of the video I show pictures about treatments, inclusions and tricks people are making to sell you Emerald that are fake, glass or treated stones. I'll show you some pictures of green Beryl of low quality so like that you can compare.
As I am making a lot of microphotography in the lab, I am making right now a video with some inclusions you can find in natural Emerald. One of those pictures was selected to be published in the new eBook "The Handbook of Gemmology" Edited by Geoff Dominy. The eBook is done and will be released soon on the market, check it out!
Best Regards
Olivier

Excellent video! THANK YOU Oliver! I saw over 50 articles & photos about how to distinguish real emeralds and none was explained and shown that clearly and thorough! I have a emerald pendant which was nearly 2000USD a large piece of emerald...I think I was cheated by a seller with lab made! I wish I saw this video before I bought it!

Thank you. Great to be able to get a professional tutorial on line. I Liked your vid on ruby too. Emerald is such a weird stone. I've seen included and striated, opaque stones sell for $1k's. If they were tourmaline, I'd throw them away. I would assume that that would be a telltale sign? I also check for almost like a multi swirled machined aluminum look, when looking down through the table into the pavillion. A more common trait of Colombian emerald, as to Zambian. Hard to fake.

A purist. Thank God. Love this guy. For a long time only Colombian Cr Beryl was called Emerald. Then The GIA was "Bribed" basically to include Vanadium beryl & others by large mining Co's and brokerages. The GIA( self proclaimed benchmark) is politically and monetarily motivated MOST of the time- Not working for for the consumer( the people who pay retail ) Amidst a hundred other reasons can not be trusted and contrary to popular belief; IS fallible. Please keep doing your videos. They helped me a lot as an ameture. I'm sure many others- If you ever have a hard time getting genuine let me know $600 USD pr ct Anyone who would like to keep up on new and shady treatments/gem scams I recommend "Scamologist" on FB. Hello Mohammad, Synthetic emerald behave exactly like a natural one. It is a uniaxial crystal that polarize the light and then will react the same under polariscope, refractometer, spectroscope, dichroscope, etc. First clue, as the color of those synthetic emerald come from the chromium (Cr) they usually dope it heavily and then when you check the stone with Chelsea filter the stone will be bright red. But that is just a clue.

Hello Olivier, I have been doing some research on emeralds and am facing a dilemma in regards to synthetic emeralds. How does synthetic emeralds behave under polariscope? Are synthetic emeralds dichroic as well? The RI for real emeralds and synthetics is pretty much very close, so it is very tough to distinguish between real and synthetic.

Hello, unfortunately I do not have any emerald rough here in the lab. Price will vary a lot depending on the color and clarity of the rough. Of course, the rough can be treated too, so you have to know how to detect it. Some rough could look nice, but would not be gem quality and then maybe very difficult or impossible to cut. Buying rough stones to cut gemstones is not an easy game. More often, you'll lost a lot of money if you don't have the knowledge. Thank you for the question.

It sounds, Mr. Louy, that you hail from Europe. Please, what region of France (Belgium, perhaps?) do you come from, I'm very curious. Don't let the nay-sayers below tell you otherwise - your command (not diction, so sorry) of the English language is to be commended, much as you hesitate to find the correct words most of the time. I have the same trouble also being polyglot. Very informative video, merci monsieur!

Most of the emerald, but not all, are colored by Cr and then you'll see the stone glowing red, or light red depending of the saturation of the color through a Chelsea filter. But, some nice emerald with increasing iron Fe content will diminish the effect. Some emerald colored by vanadium V will show green.
@MrFracknight
@MrFracknight 10 жыл бұрын
Olivier Louy Some tourmaline colored by Cr will show red too, but they are expensive and mostly sold as Green tourmaline and not as an imitation of emerald. Step 1), ask where the emerald come from. 2) check with chelsea filter and if the stone turn red then it is or a natural emerald or a synthetic one. 3) check the inclusions to make the difference...
@MrFracknight
@MrFracknight 10 жыл бұрын
Olivier Louy Last word, a synthetic stone, like a ruby, sapphire, emerald, spinel are mostly to clean to be true. If the stone is clean! Ask a gemologist to check it for you before you buy. This especially for emerald. All the emerald on the market today are included and treated, same for ruby, same for sapphire... same for everything that is usually very expensive and sold as inexpensive...
