Junk yota trucks holding a suspension together with a bunch of CV joints and boots, another way car stealer repair shops make $$$$$. Chevy only has 4 on their 4x4, rolling over 300k on mine. If the axle isn't worn out and just a torn boot , use micro zipties if at the edge of boot and roofing tar to patch that area or any other area of a tear on a boot. That's a permanent fix, as durable or better than new, alot less $$$. His idea of repacking the boot with grease is still a good idea before making a repair.

Don’t scare people, you can drive a LONG time with torn CV boots. Eventually it will start clicking when you turn the wheel, that’s fine to drive on still. After that point it will start to click when you’re going straight, then you really should bring it in for service when you have the time. These things are so robust it’s crazy. If you’re on the side of the road and look under your car and see a torn boot, don’t sweat it.

Team O'Neil In a race, you’re not going to be able to “get to a gas station or parts store” to get grease, plastic bags or zip ties.

1) Hot knife / soldering iron (any metal object you can heat and hold safely ) - If the hole is not very large you can fix a boot with this method. This one is somewhat permanent if done well. 2) RTV also works, it just needs ample time to dry and requires that the boot does not flex very much on the repair area.

Thank you for letting the World know how simple this issue can be. I've seen some crazy nuts on KZfaq talking all kinds of stuff. I just had this issue today with my wife's medium size SUV. I jacked it up and immediately put grease inside the boots while wearing gloves, however, I will repair it tomorrow. I will go to the dealership to ask how much it'll be the boot kit, I WILL CERTAINLY RUN OUT SCREAMING! I know also another trick but have not done it. Once It proves that work, it will be posted. YOU have done great with this video. Thank you so very much!

If the hole is very small some flexible sealing spray works really well as a temporary repair. I did that once & it held up for a few months before leaking again. Let it dry completely before driving it of course.

Buying time 😂 it works! But a worn out CV will and can exert more wear and tear to the gearbox. So best not to drive around with clunking, crackling or ticking noises coming from driveshafts. I experienced gearbox bearing wear. Had to change them all. It wasn't easy! Especially when I didn't have the tools necessary. Had to use my heat gun to remove most of the old bearings. A couple were preloaded bearings. They had to be shimmed using backlash measurements and engineers blue dye. Took me a few days.

If you have a boot with the fifty pence shape and only a normal round boot cut the ripped boot two inches below big side like a fifty pence so you have a round solid point all ready locked on CV put CV boot on the rubber and pull up with tiepulls or metal band clips the soft universal CV boots you cut to size best you can call them stretchy CV boots in UK Scotland

Is it possible to add too much grease and cause overheating? I ask because on bicycles and dirtbikes I use the following rule: if a bearing doesn't spin continuously and fast, like the steering bearings, which never exceed half a revolution in normal use (unless I wreck it really bad :) ) I will fill the bearing with grease; if the bearinbg spins continuously and fast, like a wheel bearing, I will fill half of it and let it spread the grease as it spins, to prevent the aforementioned overheating from happening.

Ha ha ha, reminded me so much of my rallying days. We never started a rally without a roll of duct tape and a pack of cable ties. Lovin' the "get you home" fix. My rallying was all in rear drive cars, so I never had "gaiter trouble", but if my car did have I'd pack a couple of these in the service car (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g9t1mreiuqmmdH0.html). You probably wouldn't do this on a daily but on our rally car we actually made little stone guards to fit on track rod ends and we doubled up the inner rack boot by finding a slightly larger one to go over the standard article. Love your presenting style too, so you've gained a sub!

No the only way they would need grease packed is if there is a tear. Better to replace or patch the boot if you can. No need to take the boot off and re grease every so often. Might as well replace the cv axle if it starts going bad after 1 patch
