Yes and no. I was taught by an old timer that an engine failure just means you're now piloting a glider. And in the world of unintended gliders, a high wing single engine Cessna is a fairly efficient one. Therefore unless immediately after takeoff, simply adjust pitch to max glide speed and start looking for suitable landing location. Point being, plenty of time to locate and setup a safe landing (especially if near an interstate) in which unless landing in mountainous terrain, deforming the airframe to absorb energy shouldn't be a priority. The mechanical sympathy A&P in me says while others may say the plane you during a powerplant failure, that's when you're relying on the airframe itself the most, and she is still taking care of you because you didn't just drop out of the sky. Consciously considering the airframe expendable vs taking care of it to the end, could potentially set one up, especially a student, for a landing which subjects the human body to a lot more g-forces than alternative of being gentle to body and machine. Practical example of the mindset of now piloting a glider upon engine failure; notice how abrupt and jerky the instructors inputs to the controls became immediately after noting reduced engine power... they had sufficient altitude to regroup and the aircraft was otherwise responding to controls as nornally would. Simply put, that's not how a glider pilot would be controlling the aircraft. That old timer instructor with his barn storming stories was a hard nose and sort of a pain in the ass at times, but always said when shit really hits the fan, you default back to the very first instructor you ever had, and that which they taught you. It may not make much of a difference in the example shown in video. But it may make a difference if it was a situation that every last foot of altitude, and thus time in the air, became a matter of survival or not. This instructor would get upset when the terms "push" or "pull" were used to describe manipulating the controls, even in a spin, making a point to say it's "applying pressure" or "applying back pressure", this instructor also said to open the doors before impact during such emergency landing, specifically due to airframe possibly deforming and preventing doors from opening. That was over 15 years ago, when I solo'd a 152 at age 17. And only now realize after reading your comment, and watching this video, an unspoken truth he instilled from the very start; He was willing to sacrifice the airframe without reserve. But I don't recall him ever directly stating such. The airframe's structural integrity being the last ditch safety margin. And if you take care of her all the way to the end, she'll sacrifice herself to take care of you. I'd like to think that's a very different approach (pun intended) than taking the "you failed me" mindset immediately upon loss of engine power, when there's potentially many minutes of gliding flight available to methodically select a safe landing site. This is long winded perhaps in the event someone comes across it in the future, and sees from a different perspective, be it student, instructor or otherwise

@@rickc303 No I agree, if you can land it without damage by all means but my point is I am not going out of my way to save the airplane. When a pilot of a light twin with a gear up issue cuts both engines on final in order to not damage the engines on landing that is just dumb, he is more worried about damage to the plane than his own safety. (as he floats beyond his intended landing point due to his underestimating the power of ground effect with a streamlined airplane and crashes into a building when he could have went around with 2 good engines for another try). That type of mindset in an emergency gets people killed. A pilot who stretches a glide to make a road and stall/spins to his death versus having landed in a farmer's field has made the same wrong decision.

@@rickc303 the problem is when someone tries too hard to save the airframe and trys to go too far and winds up in a stall/spin. Obviously they aren't suggesting to aim for the nearest tree, but do not kill yourself trying to not bend the plane.

Also good to practice drills on the ground. Know how to get your seat belt off, open the door and exit the aircraft safely and efficiently. Sounds easy but I had 2 mates die in a post crash fire because they couldn't get out. That being said you did an excellent job Sir. Well done

it’s the “jerk-throttling” technique developed by Dick Richards, when he was around 17 years old & trying to get to Bangkok. he told his girl that they had to Get Down quickly, but she refused to accept it, asking, “isn’t there something else you can do?!?!” he instinctively & repetitively jerked his throttler to avoid the inevitable pain of Not Making It. it worked and he was quite relieved. some avionics were ruined. the jerking made his urgent issue go away. he regained his composure & was able to Slip It In, becoming a Fokker legend. they told no one at first, but eventually shared the technique in a KZfaq comment.

I’m training in a 152 at the moment. I know when the engine won’t start pumping the throttle is a pretty common way of getting it to start back up(usually when I haven’t primed the engine enough my instructor will do it instinctively) so it doesn’t surprise me that the instructor is doing that. Also yes the second thing on the checklist after pitching for best glide is pulling the carb heat. I was wondering about that too, since it’s usually one of the most common issues for partial power failure, but they might have already had it pulled it, or he pulled it when I wasn’t looking. Either way it didn’t seem like it was an issue of carb ice.

+csiastu csiastu That's the trouble with the real thing. In the heat of the moment, so often the well rehearsed routine goes out the window. It shouldn't but we are human. Opening the doors prior to landing is just one example.

+phillip carl Interesting. In 1964 when I use a student pilot, I had three different instructors. One was a nervous wreck (he was actually killed by somehow not recovering from a spin) the other a strict disciplinarian who shouted at me and the other was calm and kind but if you did anything wrong he would tick you off and explain the reasons and the possible consequences. He became my regular instructor. He was the only one of the three to advocate opening doors in the event of forced landing. So I always stuck to that rule. Thank God I never had to do it for real. Your reasoning makes sense though.

+Lior Bar-On To me it looked like he chose the worst possible spot..heading for a line of trees when there were plenty of other tree-less options. He was lucky to stop just short of the tree-line, and to have a narrow gap available if need be, but he couldn't have known that when he committed to that approach (he obviously thought the trees were far enough away). It could well have been a fatal landing but for luck. Watch again at 2:05

This was a good landing, the pilot in the right seat had very good handling of the aircraft, the only problem I see is that hitting trees with the wings is very dangerous because most of the fuel is in the wings and can light up easily with the impact.

@Rod Terrell,: Yes the instructor did a great job! It’s hard with the video quality you can’t really tell but there seemed to be a lot of fields around. From height they might seem like a good landing spot, but that can be deceiving. There are many variables that can go against you in field choice. If it’s a field that’s just been sowed or the crop needs harvesting the wheels can dig in and flip the aircraft. @Fernando M: you are correct the wings do hold the fuel cells but we used to teach many years ago if you find yourself in that situation, do exactly as he did. Aim the fuselage/cockpit between the trees and the wings will hit the trees and will dissipate the speed whilst keeping the cabin structure in tact. Thus protecting the occupants.

+a3r0st0rm Checklist? No way!! I would have tried to keep the engine running too. Try to extend the glide time, if needed. Maybe a road would be better but then you have to look for power lines with everything else that is going on. Not easy to do.

+eclipser2004 No, you have to do the checklist, if you don't it could end in death or severe injuries. Also on the checklist you have procedures to try to start the engine back up. The checklist is the way to go.

I agree ..I’ve flown small GA aircraft in the past and had to handle emergencies..it’s different in real time with the heart pumping than studying it with 20/20 hindsight. They got down alive and unharmed the main objective accomplished . The good pilot,in my opinion ,studies what went wrong and what went well and learns from it .We are all lifelong students in flying ,no one knows everything or is perfect all the time .

Exactly right. I had an almost identical emergency landing in a Cessna 150..also about 1500 ft. AGL. I'm glad these guys made it but that landing was extremely rushed and waaay too fast. On my incident I had to forward slip over some high tension wires to put in on a small field in hilly country. I landed around 65 knots and stopped VERY quickly. No damage to aircraft other than the engine that ate itself in flight (it was a stuck valve that beat a hole in the piston and bent the rod). That was the first time I took my grandfather flying with me decades ago (I was still in High School). From then on, that was his favorite story to tell...especially the part with the farmer and his AK-47 that confronted us and asked us, "What 'choo boys doin' in 'ma field? Are you with the FBI?" I suspect he was growing some "stuff" in the area.

@@Tkjawa He should have chosen a safe open spot (field) to make an off airport emergency landing (the same as if he had complete loss of power) and committed to that spot using what little power he did have left to simply assist in making it a safe landing in the chosen spot. Intermittent unreliable power should be considered a loss of power.

One or two pumps of the throttle. If it doesn't recover - stop freaking pumping the throttle. Totally agreed. Pitch for minimum sink initially while you find a best place to land. Then accelerate to best glide after turning to the landing point and then setup for a pattern to land. Why a pattern? It's your last up close view you'll get before actually going where you initially spotted to land. And it isn't always the same from 1000' as it is from 500.
