Today we visit a local rural Thailand hospital for a medical emergency and see what their waiting times and costs are life. This is not really medical tourism but more of an insight into healthcare here. I was bitten by a dog and had to get a series of rabies shots!

I was bitten by a dog in UdonThani last February. As a non resident, it cost me 1800 Thai Baht. This was for the original consultation and a further three visits to the hospital. The drugs I received were Rabies Vaccine, Tetanus Vaccine, Expedia, Antibiotic, anti inflammatory and paracetamol. I think it was incredible value considering, I had three large punctures on my hand. udon is has a large population, however I was dealt with incredibly fast. Thai local hospitals are a little bit dated, but I found the staff and service to be of a high standard. I have no problem recommending the Thai hospitals to foreigners.

I went to one of the local hospitals in Korat when I had my dog bite. My repeat visits were all around 6pm. The national anthem is always played at 6pm so it was interesting to see everyone standing to attention in the waiting room. Maybe the NHS could try playing the national anthem in A&E on Friday nights in order to calm down the punters.

Before I moved to live more of the time in Thailand, I wanted to get the rabies vaccine. In the U.S., the cheapest price I could find was $1,200US. I waited and got the vaccine at the Red Cross center in BKK and total out of pocket cost for it was: $35US! Same with the Japanese encephalopathy vaccine. In the U.S., it was $450 and in BKK it was around $20.

It depends on what type of care you need. Bangkok Hospital in Hua Hin is nearly worthless. The drs. are either just out of med school and know little or they are getting ready to retire and aren't interested. Take this pill and come back next week.

Just came home from the Emergency room. I am in a rural Thai village an hour away from Chiang Rai. Cut my finger with a knife, not badly, but right across the knuckle joint of my index finger. So every time it bent, the cut re-opens. Arrived at the hospital at 7:45 pm, was out the door and on my way home by 8:20. The treatment (a single stitch on that joint skin) was totally completed within 15 of arrival! Paying took longer than getting seen and treated! I speak Thai fairly fluently. The one stich on my finger joint was $11 usd, or ฿400 with no insurance used. In USA I would have just suffered through the longer healing period and the larger scar from the inevitable infections from the cut not being sutured. But here, I can live like a proper human without draining my savings.

Took my dad to a local hospital in Thailand for rabies injection in the middle of the night. We spent less than half an hour in the ER. When I hurt my fingers and suspected a broken bone, I went to an ER in Melbourne and spent about 4 hours before I got seen by a doctor. Nurses could not give anything except a panadol pill, so I was in pain for 4 hours. I saw a woman in a wheelchair collapsed and screamed in pain before a nurse came to see her......

Thanks Ryan and Mo plus boys, great vlog as always. I completely agree with you about thai government hospitals including the rural ones. I have always used them and could not wish for better treatment. Sometimes the bigger ones are a little crowded but as I am retired I don't mind the wait and also the beds on the wards can be a little close together, but as the only "falang" on the ward it is quite entertaining. I was once asked, whilst an in patient if I would mind speaking to a group of about 10 trainee nurses to help them with their English! I just love Thailand. Interesting about your cacti which I have just redeveloped an interest in. I have an old copy of the Observers Book of Cacti which I had about 60 years ago when I first got interested. God Bless you all 😀❤🙏

You have had a good quick service which is like many things in Thailand ‘hit and miss’ in how that works. Besides the local town hospital., villages have medical centres I went to the local hospital to have some stitches removed (done initially by a private hospital but it was a three hour drive to go back) The hospital were ‘disinterested’ and the Emergency Room curtains had the residue of a previous patients dried blood upon them. To sum up the doctors attitude I would say ‘grumpy’ is the kindest words I could use. Follow up care I went to the local village medical centre and they were quick, helpful and friendly. Being taken seriously sick last week again went to the local Thai Government hospital and again met with disinterest and a less than supple approach of basically the ambulance can take you to a private hospital in the city - what about the government hospital in the city. I asked ? No don’t think so, so taken by what seemed like a driver from ‘Kerry’ than an ambulance as trying to stay on the stretcher was difficult at best. I could say that I came away unimpressed with the experience and a distinct overtone of the sketch from ‘League of Gentlemen’ “It’s a local shop for local people you know” Keep up with the interesting vlogs 👍🏼

I also use the local rural hospitals in Indonesia (although the nearest to me is 25km away and I don't have a driving license). I was anticipating the cost in Thailand to be more, but I think that's even cheaper than Indonesia. Certainly the waiting is less, it would take 15 mins to 1 hour just to pay.

General appointment in the UK to see a doctor (GP) need to make a reservation wait time 2-3 weeks , Recently the Doctors and nurses have ALL been on strike (on and off over the last 6 months) , they wanted a 5- 30% pay rise. Its a six year wait for operations.Cancer care and other urgent / important surgery is very fast a few weeks wait. (GP pay goes up ward of 80-100k not including private work over time extra for weekends) there are 6million people on the waitlist for operations within the NHS. If you are an illegal immigrant all the hospital treatment , dentist pregnancy treatment if 'free' paid for by the tax payer.

I got bit by a dog my first day I was in the town I've now lived in for 4 years. It was quite the welcome. My local hospital is about like yours, maybe slightly bigger. Cheap, sometimes free even if no medicine. I also had to get the rabies series. Since it was a large aggressive dog, the government officers came to find me to go identify the problem dog. Good hospital, good government workers. Good experience all around. Hospital was only busy during covid vaccine administrations for the public. There's a half marathon run here that supports the hospital. It's good to participate in community support as well, and fun.

And those USA prices don't include doctor, hospital fees and taxes. the US health system is truly a racket. I have heart disease and needed to get echocardiogram, ekg and blood tests. It makes my blood boil how bad the NHS is. You wait days or weeks for an appointment. Then wait months for an appointment to see a specialist. Then wait months or years for a surgery. And people say it’s free but it’s not cos it’s all paid through our taxes. If you go private it will cost you a bomb and you’re essentially paying twice since you’re paying for the nhs through your taxes and then not even using it. The way this country glorifies the NHS is shameful and embarrassing. We have a lot to learn from Thailand. I’ve received medical treatment in Chiangmai and Krabi and it was excellent, fast and cheap

If you eat one meal a day, eat lots of eggs, take a shot of extra virgin olive oil every morning, eat 4 seeds of bitter apricot a day, and eat mostly organic foods, you may not need to go to the hospital at all. Health care here is great if you avoid the international hospitals that are mostly catering to medical tourism. I've been a few times over the decades. International hospitals have been quite discerning in their practices of encouraging unnecessary examinations.. 🙄 Sadly the hospitals don't actually give you a physical examination. It's all blood tests, invasive biopsies, computer analysis, imagery etc.... not once has a doctor physically examined me. 😢 Public local hospitals and mission hospitals are much more personalised.

Thought I had covid 😂 Went to my local doc. He explained very well I needed an injection after ever bite. And I two had to keep going back for 4 more injections. 😂 Hat off to you for sharing. Thank you Can't wait to buy your book.

anyone who watches this should never say anything negative about thai healthcare, in broken britain the nhs is not fit for purpose, you would have died from rabies by the time you would have had an injection.

@@lifeinruralthailand Depends of course, if you have an appointment and what you are there for. A random walk in to see a doctor during peak time, say Monday mid day could take 4-5 hours

No chit, last time I took my dog for that it was $400 , I cannot even imagine what it would be for me! Planting a sacrificial crop to attract the intruders then sacrifice them to the god of fertilization , use this as compost.

Natural remedy for rabies is a flower essence rubbed on the site and taken internally. There are ones for snake bites and so much more. Homeopathic remedies and more as well. They have kits that can be kept at home for such emergencies. Myself and other woman around me have used them for toxic spider bites and more. I have just used a general emergency mix with excellent results. The vibration is higher than the poison and wins the battle. Nature amazes me with it's safe options. ❤

Homeopathy is quackery. Repeated, double blind peer reviewed studies have shown. Such remedies do not treat the underlying condition but merely ameliorate symptoms temporarily due to the placebo effect.

Should have bitten it back 😁😁. To be honest it was probably feeling dog guilty. On waiting times in the UK, I had quite a nasty eye injury 4 weeks ago. Optician sent me to opthalmologic A & E, was assessed, treated and left in 3 1/2 hours. Thought that was quite good especially as there was a junior doctors strike that day. The treatment and various ointments were "free".
