As incidents go with frontline military jets like the Eurofighter Typhoons, they're far and few between, but yesterday (19th March) saw one of those rare moments.
ZJ917, a IX(B) Squadron-marked jet, flying as 'Triple 43' rejected its take-off before slamming on the brakes to slow the jet down. Defence Fire & Rescue ('Crash Combine') were alerted by Coningsby Tower that the aircraft had vacated the runway and was reporting hot brakes and required assistance.
After reporting in position, the Crew Commander notified Coningsby Tower that the Typhoon's brakes were reaching temperatures of 300 degrees Celsius but with no signs of smoke or fire. Crash Combine and Triple 43 remained in situ for approximately 15 minutes to allow the jets' brakes to cool naturally before the emergency status was stood down.
