Matt, he is 72 years old. Those 15-hour days wear you down. NIL, the portal, and everything else has changed football for better or worse. It isn't getting any easier. And what does he have left to prove? As a Tennessee fan, I have nothing but respect for Coach Saban. Never be another one like him. But I figured him buying the home in Jupiter Fla was a damned good clue he was close to hanging up his spurs. Like all of us, he has a family, and I'm sure he would like to spend some time with them. I promise that when you get older, you will understand fully. Bama has had a list of hires to replace him for a while. Stop fretting. Congrats to coach Saban and enjoy every minute of your retirement, sir.

I’m not a Bama fan, but I am a huge fan of Saban. I have nothing but respect for him. He’s a legendary coach, and is easily the best to ever do it. I know you’re freaking out, Matt, but surely he deserves to bow out in the way he wants. He probably wants to spend time with his family! It’s a huge loss for college sports, because he was a class act! I started wondering about Saban’s future when he started appearing regularly on the Pat Mcafee show. I just had this feeling he might be thinking of retirement. Still, I was shocked by the news!

First, let me say, great job on the videos. As an OU fan I was blindsided a couple of years ago and feel your pain somewhat. With the massive changes in the college football landscape (portals, NIL, realignment, etc.) maybe he felt he couldn’t deal with the changes or didn’t want to deal with them.

As an OU fan as well, I completely believe he DIDN'T want to deal with it. He would never have a team like he did even just a few years ago based on the money alone. He has money, family, and doesn't need the stress. Although, I will say our against them next season won't be quite as sweet.

I believe ol Nick feels like all the other college football coaches, this generation of kids are spoiled beyond belief, and they all got money now and that makes them not even have the same passion as the past teams he coached,(probably the reason he even came to college football in the first place) plus they can up and transfer every season now if they want. No coach in college football likes what it has become nowadays and they all want out. This season alone is why he come out of nowhere and leave like this. It’s a sad day here in Bama I tell ya 🤦‍♂️

So coaches don't want players being as spoiled as them.

Matt, how is this so shocking? There were definitely rumors this year of him retiring. Expecting him to coach until 2032 is a little ridiculous, it makes sense- he's 72 and doesn't like where cfb is headed. Saban is the goat and I hope he enjoys retirement!

Yeah, I remember when Bear Bryant retired. That was really tough, and this is equally as tough and you're correct, there aren't any other Nick Saban's out there. So, who knows what will happen now. sucks 😞

The portal is a big reason. He's fed up with transfers I hear Saban preach on commitment alot and he said players need it for growth. Not only just for coaching reasons

Matt, he probably took a good, hard look at what's going on in college football with the portal, NIL and everything else and just looked in the mirror and asked his alter ego one question: Do I really want to keep doing this? I'm 72 years old, been in coaching for over 50 years, accomplished everything possible and just really want to go fishing. The man's the greatest coach we've seen in college and if he thinks it's time to go, well, I respect that. As a Georgia fan, it's been an honor to watch him work even though his Alabama teams have broken my heart more times than I care to remember. I wish him all the best. LEGEND!!!

I understand it. This is how us Patriots fans felt when Tom Brady left. He was most of our childhoods and I grew up watching him every weekend for my whole life basically. And now with Bill gone it it’s truly the end of an era, Saban was the Bill B of college, yes we were spoiled since our teams were good but we respect everything they did and I’m extremely grateful for them.

NIL and transfer portal without consequence…this is why. Every year, every one of his players becomes an unrestricted free agent. They let the literal convicts take over. Bama needs a leader that can coach a convict. We need Urban Meyer.

I know Alabama fans have been enjoying the Saben era and you are surprised at the suddenness of the announcement but the man is 72 years old. He probably wants to enjoy his golden years without the pressure of being the head coach of one of the most high-profile programs in college football.

College football as we've had the pleasure of knowing the game, is over. With the instability brought about by the portal nonsense, players jumping here and there, with the NIL greed, players sitting out bowl games - who in their right mind wants to deal with that each year? And that doesn't factor in the entire woke environment found in most every university today and the NCAA's ridiculous championship game mess. The only thing I think was wrong was someone leaking Saban's plans before he had the chance to make the announcement himself. That's just another example of what's wrong. Whaever "juice" Saban has left in this tank, he wants to spend it on his family and doing what he wants, for a change. Thank you, Coach, for all the great years at Bama. Your legacy, along with Coach Bryant, will be difficult to match, let alone exceed. OSU Buckeye Girl
