Formed in 1970, Emerson, Lake & Palmer helped define and set new standards throughout one of the most ambitious and experimental periods in 20th-Century popular music. Drawn from The Nice, King Crimson, and Atomic Rooster respectively, they were hailed as progressive rock’s first supergroup. Combining driving dynamics, intricate arrangements, and virtuosic skill, between 1970 and 1978, ELP released seven studio recordings and three live albums. Such was their popularity on both sides of the Atlantic that their records repeatedly achieved Platinum status sales.
Titles such as Tarkus, Trilogy, and Brain Salad Surgery created distinctive worlds that incorporated soaring themes, other-worldly timbres, yearning ballads, humorous pastiche and dramatic long-form conceptual works. While they adapted pieces by classical composers as stylistically varied as Bartok, Mussorgsky, Copland, Ginastera and Rodrigo, ELP sounded like nobody else but themselves.
The trio performed live one final time at London’s High Voltage Festival in July 2010 just weeks short of their debut gig 40th anniversary.
Although Keith Emerson and Greg Lake both sadly passed away in 2016, interest in ELP continues to grow, and Carl Palmer’s own band regularly performs a setlist dedicated to the unique music he helped create. ELP's music continues to find new audiences more than 50 years from their beginning, a striking testament to the group's irrepressible blend of energy, eclecticism, and visceral excitement.

Black Moon is a very underrated ELP album. It shows another pathway if you will which every Artist needs to survive. Bring new ideas to show or hear. Another chapter.

If "The Score" is the ELP epic piece that won't stop starting, "Changing States" is the piece that won't stop stopping! :) I love this thing though. Emerson writes the coolest basslines and you can hear Lake playing it so clearly and solidly. It's a brilliant piece of work by all three of them.

I keep saying that this is the most consistent and consistently good ELP studio album. The only other one in the same league in that sense IMO is ELPowell.

Album was released in May of 1992 . Black Moon concept was a film production in the making. Producer offered ELP album if they would reunite for project. They agreed but the film never happened. Changing States is an Emerson track from his solo years. The drums and drum sounds were the tail end of the 80s big drum sound that every producer wanted. Every ELP fan wanted a return to Alex Grob or Eddie Offord engineering but at thid time everything was digital and compressed. The "big drums" was 80's pruduction responding to post production compression issues. It worked for Phil Collins. Lol.

I would have loved to have seen it. ELPowell playing "The Score" live - which is mostly instrumental - was one of the most exciting things I've ever seen at a concert.

@@byzantineroman2407 There’s some amateur-shot that is at least enough to show what it was like. The biggest shock was how much of a gorilla Cozy Powell was. I really feel like the ELPowell songs were written to adapt to his style. Aiming for a cymbal off to the right, that stick started out way to the *left*. I’d never seen a drummer go at a kit like it was Ali vs. Frazier.

@@hubbsllc He played with hammers instead of drum sticks, lol. The song that really shows that was ELPowell's version of Knife Edge.
