Formed in 1970, Emerson, Lake & Palmer helped define and set new standards throughout one of the most ambitious and experimental periods in 20th-Century popular music. Drawn from The Nice, King Crimson, and Atomic Rooster respectively, they were hailed as progressive rock’s first supergroup. Combining driving dynamics, intricate arrangements, and virtuosic skill, between 1970 and 1978, ELP released seven studio recordings and three live albums. Such was their popularity on both sides of the Atlantic that their records repeatedly achieved Platinum status sales.
Titles such as Tarkus, Trilogy, and Brain Salad Surgery created distinctive worlds that incorporated soaring themes, other-worldly timbres, yearning ballads, humorous pastiche and dramatic long-form conceptual works. While they adapted pieces by classical composers as stylistically varied as Bartok, Mussorgsky, Copland, Ginastera and Rodrigo, ELP sounded like nobody else but themselves.
The trio performed live one final time at London’s High Voltage Festival in July 2010 just weeks short of their debut gig 40th anniversary.
Although Keith Emerson and Greg Lake both sadly passed away in 2016, interest in ELP continues to grow, and Carl Palmer’s own band regularly performs a setlist dedicated to the unique music he helped create. ELP's music continues to find new audiences more than 50 years from their beginning, a striking testament to the group's irrepressible blend of energy, eclecticism, and visceral excitement.

What just blows my mind is the fact that these 3 musicians barely in their 20’s, turned out consistent awesome music, on analog equipment, seeming so effortlessly. Talent from true masters.

I’m 62 and I still listen to this album at least several times a year, there was a beautiful insert on the album that had a picture of Emerson, Lake & Palmer side-by-side in black-and kind of a gray scale photo. I have that framed in my house. Their style of music is for everybody, but I loved it and always will

4:54 - love the transition, and the dualing keyboards. No other 3 person group put more originality and strength into their work. And all 3 were so evenly great. Emerson and his ground breaking organ playing. Greg Lake with his million dollar voice. And perhaps the most underrated Carl Palmer with his incredible drum sets -- he was the star in concerts, IMO.

Cool tune. Our 3-piece played this at a high school talent show in 1974. I had a Hammond Porta-B and an Arp Odyssey for the gig. The Odyssey actually did a nice similar sample and hold on the Ab in the transition to Part 2.

I heard the live 'King Biscuit Flower Hour' version on the radio in 1996. When I bought the live CD in the early 2000s or so, I didn't realize it was double-sided, and first thought the track was missing! I prefer the beginning of this album track less due to the bell-tapping and mixed keyboard/piano (they obviously had their reasons at the time), but I see they put a great deal of effort into the recording.

The ELP Works Tour, with full orchestra and chorus, set the standard by which all rock concerts are compared. My friends and I took in the tour's initial stop, in Louisville, KY. By that time, the Yamaha was Emerson's preferred keyboard, as it provided Keith a distinctly different expression of his genius, as was most evident in how they brought Peter Sinfield's lyrics to life in "Pirates".
