Live, Keith Emerson would have just sailed of the planet, and beat for note Carl Palmer would have followed him. It would be that smooth voice of Greg Lake that would reel them back. I think that his absolute rock star performances and musical ability, had a tendency to eclipsed his brilliance as a composer. I have been binge watching their live videos. Sad the three of them will never take the stage again in this world. @James Smith right on man! I couldn't begin to guess how many thousands of times I spun this LP back in the day. Yes I could hear Carl and used to point it out to people at that very moment during Keith's attack in the middle. Carl was kicking major ass! His accuracy and power were stunning throughout Aquatarkus as well ! I remember later around 1980 introducing (more like initiating) a friend to Carl Palmer who was always going on about Neil Peart (no disrespect to Peart either) but my friend hadn't really heard ELP that much. He got "initiated" with this live version- loudspeakers and hi wattage amp! Needless to say he walked away slack jaw without words. Both ELP and RUSH were incredible three piece bands in their own right, but during ELPs heyday, they were simply untouchable !

Hello all you fellow ELP-heads. If you are here and listening to this piece, then you are probably a True Fan, like me. I still have the original 3-piece fold-out LP. I haven't had a phonograph to play it on for decades now, but hey you never know.... The front panel opens up to the left, and a panel under that opens up to the right, with big metallic block letters on each of the three inside panels spelling out "E L P." A triple live album; one of the first ever, I believe, if not THE first ever. I've always thought that this album was mixed heavy and muddy, but as time has passed it's become a part of what this album is, like a part of its "personality," if you will. Take that away, and it becomes a completely different entity. I saw these guys 6 times back in the 70's. Remember those old black and white newsreel clips of the girls screaming and fainting when the Beatles arrived in America for the first time? I was kind of like that with ELP, especially E. I didn't scream or faint or anything, but I was a huge fan. They were my favorite band of all time, and as I ( and my musical tastes) have matured and expanded, they are still pretty dang near the top of the list, and I still listen to them regularly. By the way, if you're an ELP fan you owe it to yourself to check out Rachel Flowers here on YT. She's a remarkable young woman with a special talent who shares our passion. I'm sure you will enjoy it as much as I did. Here's a sample for you, be sure to listen to some of her other stuff. And that's not just A Moog, it's HIS Moog. Yes, HIS. On her left, you'll catch a few glimpses of The Beast, aka The World's Most Famous Synthesizer. Look for the backstory on how that Moog came to be underneath her fingertips; it's fascinating and includes Keith himself giving a shout out to Rachel, from the legendary Abbey Road studio with Keith's "Bolero" playing in the background. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f8hjZJCFqa6UZX0.html

"Welcome back my friends ..." was not the first triple rock album. A year before "Yessongs" were relased, also a great masterpiece, however after almost 50 years I am more ELP pro. Also triple "The Concert for Bangladesh" should be mentioned but, of course, it is not a single band album. You were lucky enough being able to attend ELP shows or to buy their LPs. I am from Poland and records of bands like ELP costed then fortune (about weekly average salary per single LP). Fortunately, some radio DJ's were broadcasting good music and I collectied many tapes with geat music. Of course, now I have many good albums released on CD, including most of good albums by ELP (and Jethro Tull). Moreover, British or American bands very rarely visited Poland in the 70s, so I had no chance to attend shows by groups like ELP at their best years.

There's only one thing I don't like about the modern version of Tarkus. 0:50, the Gsus4 doesn't resolve to a Gmaj in the studio version, and instead sticks to the quartal harmony; this version resolves the Gsus4 into a Gmaj, which feels less Tarkus-y and more commercial. Maybe I'm just not open-minded enough to understand. However, the fact that my only gripe with this version is a single note says more about how fantastic this performance is. That synth with the high resonance in the first section of Mass was seriously jamming, and Battlefield has never sounded better. Aquatarkus leaves one speechless.
