Formed in 1970, Emerson, Lake & Palmer helped define and set new standards throughout one of the most ambitious and experimental periods in 20th-Century popular music. Drawn from The Nice, King Crimson, and Atomic Rooster respectively, they were hailed as progressive rock’s first supergroup. Combining driving dynamics, intricate arrangements, and virtuosic skill, between 1970 and 1978, ELP released seven studio recordings and three live albums. Such was their popularity on both sides of the Atlantic that their records repeatedly achieved Platinum status sales.
Titles such as Tarkus, Trilogy, and Brain Salad Surgery created distinctive worlds that incorporated soaring themes, other-worldly timbres, yearning ballads, humorous pastiche and dramatic long-form conceptual works. While they adapted pieces by classical composers as stylistically varied as Bartok, Mussorgsky, Copland, Ginastera and Rodrigo, ELP sounded like nobody else but themselves.
The trio performed live one final time at London’s High Voltage Festival in July 2010 just weeks short of their debut gig 40th anniversary.
Although Keith Emerson and Greg Lake both sadly passed away in 2016, interest in ELP continues to grow, and Carl Palmer’s own band regularly performs a setlist dedicated to the unique music he helped create. ELP's music continues to find new audiences more than 50 years from their beginning, a striking testament to the group's irrepressible blend of energy, eclecticism, and visceral excitement.

They don't even remotely make music comparable to this these days. This is a true masterpiece. ELP has allways been my favorite band. Keith Emerson was a true genius and an amazing. Musician and composer. Sadly he died so tragically and early. RIP.

"nearly perfect" Which aspect of this piece is lacking, that in your opinion, makes it less than perfect?

@@vincewhirlwind1778 It was too short, lol. Seriously, though, they didn't play Grieg's "in the Hall of the Mountain King" during Aquatarkus... I know that was exclusive to the tour during '72 and they were probably tired of that routine by '74, but the inclusion of that piece would have made the improv during Aquatarkus perfect in my opinion.

My CD version is a Japanese import. The track divisions were messed up but I made a recut version of my rip that sorts everything out. I bought the vinyl when I was about 12 years old and it's absolutely incomparable.

I was 14 when it came out and I used to idolize it. Only later I discovered that from 19:39 on they heavily "borrow" from Dick Hyman's "The Minotaur", a track from his masterpiece album Moog: The Electric Eclectics of Dick Hyman, which was released in 1969. Suddenly, all its avant garde turned to retro...

I've been playing drums for over 30 years. ELP was just a little bit before my time. How come growing up with the list of great and legendary drummers in the world how come Carl Palmer's name is never mentioned on that list everybody always bowing down to Ginger John and Keith but not a whisper about Carl. WTF I was robbed

Those 'Greatest {fill in the blank}' lists are usually nothing more than a popularity contest. Although ELP were wildly popular in the 1970's, the uniqueness of their music (ie; it's not blues based, and they didn't have any top40 hit singles) led to their being a somewhat 'forgotten' band, although ELP fans (such as myself) and true aficionados of great talent and great musicians will regard them highly forever.

What happened to Jacksyzk remixing this album? All the "remastering" in the world won't fix what it is - quad-fold-down-to-stereo. The best live Tarkus performance, though. Nobody can deny how on-fire they're here, Anaheim 2/74.

@davidl.7317 Nice. 1974 is a little before my time. Folks saw them, though - Coshocton University, OH 1972. Said they were really loud. Closet thing I have to that is Pocono on the same tour; was put out on RSD 2019. Palmer kept speeding the songs up and Emerson tries to slow him down. There's some tracks from on YT. They weren't in the pocket as good then; WBMYF is where they got it down perfect.
@mrJimCharles

You're saying that the guy Jakko Jacksyzk (sp??) from King Crimson was going to remix this???
@RichardNixonsHippieRemoval
@RichardNixonsHippieRemoval 7 ай бұрын
@mrJimCharles Yes. Polish guy with big dark hair. He did the same for Trilogy and Brain Salad Surgery in 2015. JJ then wrote online he was to start on WBMF, Emerson died, JJ deleted post, then crickets. JJ did state the reason why WBMF sounds distant is because it's a quadrophonic folded down to stereo. Then I recently heard Sabbath's Paranoid quad folded down to stereo...same thing, sounds distant and that's a studio album. So a proper stereo mix of WBMF would be a massive improvement. Mar Y Sol and Pocono are stereo mixes and both sound great. Thing is, those performances aren't as fire as the WBMF performances.

@@islandpalm148my only complaint about this album is that they have never released the encore of pictures at an exhibition.
