Lyrics:
Has the dawn ever seen your eyes?
Have the days made you so unwise?
Realize, you are
Had you talked to the winds of time
Then you'd know how the waters rhyme
Taste of wine
How can you know where you've been?
In time you'll see the sign
And realize your sin
Will you know how the seed is sown?
All your time has been overgrown
Never known
Have you walked on the stones of years?
When you speak, is it you that hears?
Are your ears full?
You can't hear anything at all
The preacher said a prayer
Save every single hair on his head
He's dead
The minister of hate had just arrived too late to be spared
Who cared?
The weaver in the web that he made
The pilgrim wandered in
Commiting every sin that he could
So good
The cardinal of grief was set in his belief he'd saved
From the grave
The weaver in the web that he made
The high priest took a blade
To bless the ones that prayed
And all obeyed
The messenger of fear is slowly growing, nearer to the time
A sign
The weaver in the web that he made
A bishops rings a bell
A cloak of darkness fell across the ground
Without a sound
The silent choir sing and in their silence
Bring jaded sound, harmonic ground
The weaver in the web that he made
Clear the battlefield and let me see
All the profit from our victory
You talk of freedom, starving children fall
Are you deaf when you hear the season's call?
Were you there to watch the earth be scorched?
Did you stand beside the spectral torch?
Know the leaves of sorrow turned their face
Scattered on the ashes of disgrace
Every blade is sharp; the arrows fly
Where the victims of your armies lie
We're the blades of grass and arrows rain
Then there will be no sorrow
Be no pain

Formed in 1970, Emerson, Lake & Palmer helped define and set new standards throughout one of the most ambitious and experimental periods in 20th-Century popular music. Drawn from The Nice, King Crimson, and Atomic Rooster respectively, they were hailed as progressive rock’s first supergroup. Combining driving dynamics, intricate arrangements, and virtuosic skill, between 1970 and 1978, ELP released seven studio recordings and three live albums. Such was their popularity on both sides of the Atlantic that their records repeatedly achieved Platinum status sales.
Titles such as Tarkus, Trilogy, and Brain Salad Surgery created distinctive worlds that incorporated soaring themes, other-worldly timbres, yearning ballads, humorous pastiche and dramatic long-form conceptual works. While they adapted pieces by classical composers as stylistically varied as Bartok, Mussorgsky, Copland, Ginastera and Rodrigo, ELP sounded like nobody else but themselves.
The trio performed live one final time at London’s High Voltage Festival in July 2010 just weeks short of their debut gig 40th anniversary.
Although Keith Emerson and Greg Lake both sadly passed away in 2016, interest in ELP continues to grow, and Carl Palmer’s own band regularly performs a setlist dedicated to the unique music he helped create. ELP's music continues to find new audiences more than 50 years from their beginning, a striking testament to the group's irrepressible blend of energy, eclecticism, and visceral excitement.

What's the historical meaning of early 70's prog-rock? To give example, analogue synthesizer as moog could sound only one tone, so the player was needed to play two synthesizers with both hands to play chord. The fighting by players with developping modern instrument with such primitiveness, it's just the historical meaning of prog-rock, I think.

Somehow, Tarkus became one of my favorite song... If not my #1. I was immediately fascinated by the song and how it works, but I couldn't admit how much I liked it until I realized just how often I listen to it. I suppose, the song grows on you. I always thought it should be made into a movie.

I had a similar feeling when i first listened to it, as i was about 6 and chose the album for its cover art. I did not "understand" the music at all, but i liked how the drawings seemed to go along with the music, and that formed a chaotic bond in my head. Some years later i listened to the album again, and suddenly i "understood" the music and everything fell into place, and it has been a favorite track ever since.

@muffinman4353 Rock and roll wasn't allowed in my house growing up. First job at 14 at the local drugstore along with mowing lawns and babysitting, I bought a stereo system, bell bottom jeans, and a couple of albums. Tarkus, Fragile, and Days of a Future Passed. Parents did not like any of it, but acknowledged that I had worked for it, therefore.... I've played clarinet, guitar, and ukulele through the years, between jobs and kids. Retired now, relearning with these wornout hands. Building guitars, ukuleles, and dulcimers to stay busy. Enthusiastically absorbing all the music I can and revisiting the old stuff and stuff that I missed working so much through the years.

I got to sit with a Hammond B3 with Leslie Cab.. it was deafening on low and has to be one of earth's finest achievements! Tarkus brings it squarely in our face.
@hvfd5956
@hvfd5956 24 күн бұрын
And Mr. Hammond hated the Leslie. He claimed that it ruined the perfect sound of his organ. By the way, the synchronous motor that makes the Hammond Organ work was a failed project from the early 1920's. Mr. Hammond tried to sell it to the government as a timer for a bomb trigger. They passed on it. I got to see a Leslie 950 in a store once(must have been real rare, Google didn't find a picture of it) - picture a large square frame with 2 rotating bass speakers on each side. Rotating horns were on the top if I remember correctly. It was huge. Unfortunately, it was not hooked up to anything. Late junior high days and early high school, I would help load in for all the bands playing at the schools, so I got to see all sorts of instruments. The Houston band 1900 Storm (named after the famous hurricane that hit Galveston) had the best gear and played the best music. They practiced near my parents house When, I win the lottery, I am going to go buy 3 B3/C3 series, just because..

@@hvfd5956 AWRITE - the following are the winning lottery numbers, 24, 55 56 11 15 and 2. Throw me 10% when it comes in! Regarding: 'Mr. Hammond,' if you're talking about the inventor for RCA Victor corp., important in radio electronics and remote control - who owned over 800 patents, I believe he was no relation to the Hammond Organ company. Though he did assemble a concert organ at the still-functioning "Hammond Castle Museum" in Gloucester MA where he lived, that organ is in disrepair while the entire estate still 'hangs on.'
@bobsquires4521
@bobsquires4521 22 күн бұрын
As I remember sitting with the B3 and Leslie cab after hours, the Leslie cab (and you're correct, the rotating horn was at the upper section of the 'box') the rotating horn had only two speeds which were controlled by a switch on the organ, and any signal sent to the Leslie, no matter how little your foot could set the foot pedal on the organ was instantly distorted by the sheer volume coming from the Leslie cab. That seems it was a mis/match on the signal input. There was no way around the distortion on the unit that was set up that I played. The owner had two other Hammond/Leslie set-ups which I never got to play. One was in his office. I just used my 'rock/roll' earplugs and had a blast with the stops, holding the fade in D9 harmony (for Us and Them - Pink Floyd) and slowly pulling out stops to sound like the recording - playing the entire song and flipping the horn to 'high-speed rotate' for the bridge. I sure wish I owned them. ALL of them! lol and I'm not greedy, right? lol One last thing; the Hammond Organ company made 'concert' organs as well, (with a full slate of keyboard foot pedals,) and one was donated to the school I worked at. We were all swamped with over-work so no-one wanted it - I should have grabbed that! grrrr lol

I can’t believe what I see as I read up on this album on Wikipedia. This was one of the signature Prog albums. Bought it the week it came out and while many people I knew took a little time to appreciate, I was instantly enraptured by the title song suite. Young and heavily into psychedelics, this became a movie in your mind. Heavy and yet floating, a great blend of classical, rock and jazz progressions. Eventually prog would sink under the weight of pretentiousness as it took itself too seriously. (See Tales of Topographic Oceans - I fell asleep at the concert)

So it is about cyborgs. This Tarkus. It is a story of Tarkus. And it is also looks like a world war 1 tank. But more cyborg, more fantasy construction, more animal. Wow! The Ticketmaster entry here is misleading, giving you the impression ELP is touring. Pretty hard to do when 2/3s of the band are dead. And you can't just replace Keith Emerson or Greg Lake. The link is actually to an upcoming Yes concert with Jon Anderson, which would indeed be great to see.

I must beg forgiveness, but I always hate this album. And 50 years Later, I feel no different. I'm a big ELP fan. I also love the nice. But I just didn't like this album. That's just me though.

@barbaraanneneale3674 I've always believed real fans of performers are the ones who genuinely dislike some of the artists output, and those who fawn over every release as being brilliant etc are fake. I don't expect to like everything my favourite artists release, goodness how many times I've tried with Zappas Jazz From Hell! Or Floyd's Endless River etc. Just one of those things!

@@andrewhaines3259 Not as bad as everyone makes out. The Gambler, Canario, Memoirs of an Officer and a Gentleman are very good. Carl's drums don't sound like him though and the BLOODY COVER!
