Emil Gilels was one of the great piano players of the XXth century. A citizen of the Soviet Union, he became known and respected in the West. His series of Beethoven piano concertos with the Cleveland Orchestra under George Szell is a reference recording. His recordings with his brother in law Leonid Kogan and Mstislav Rostropovich are nothing but historical. The program of this concert in the Carnegie Hall is the proof (should any proof be needed) of his outstanding musicality and breath. Thanks for posting ADGO.

One of my childhood heroes, I will forever remember my first listening to his inimitable rendering of Brahms second (and first) concertos. Along the years I learned to love his recording more and more... it is a marvel. One thing that always strikes me when I'm listening to Gillels playing, is that it all plays against big curtain of background silence. The silence is very present in his playing, often I thought it was just my illusion, something with the recording techniques of the time, but then... other recordings from great other pianists do not bare this... Then I though, it was Gillels that was quiet. quiet and serene at heart, putting himself in the background, pushing forward only the music. I don't know if this makes any sense to you, but as soon as I pushed "Play" for this recital.... the wonderful old serenity and quiet took over me. Emil Gillels.... what a loss. what a loss.

That’s a lovely comment. Gilels lived in my building back in the day when I lived in the USSR. Karajan adored Gilels and often like or dislike of both of them goes together.

Absolutely, Gilels' must have peaked when he delivered his version of Brahms 2nd (and 1st) piano concertos. Unparalled in those pieces.

I have a similar memory and effect that is for life. I heard him and met him in person when he performed the Beethoven 4th piano concerto. The golden sound is unique regardless of the instrument he played. He continues to inspired and shelter many genuine musicians. That shelter was needed in his life in the USSR. Read about his first and main teacher....

The Japanese issued this on CD more than 20 years ago, but it is always nice to hear it from an LP. A prominent pianist's husband told me recently he did not understand why with all the advances in technology - recordings with some of the older equipment just have better sound. Of course, many major artists have released LP editions of their albums, including complete sets of Beethoven Symphonies by Dudamel (pretty high profile for the vast majority of people who had been saying that people who liked LPs just were responding to the imperfections of it). So, I still get back to enjoying this LP - and the Medtner, a magical recording.

@@sasha42196 are we deciding which god of the pianists Olympus is better? Makes no sense. It’s how they touch your soul. I love Grigory Sokolov. Being his friend in StPetersburg, I attended all his concerts. Life took us to different corners of the world, but I never stopped being interested in his progress, his growing to be one of the best pianists. Gilels was his mentor and friend. Their interpretations of the same compositions were different, but never dull, mediocre or outlandish. They were and are always true to the music they play.

@@stonefireice6058 First of all, you must have missed it when I said "that's a matter of preference." In this particular piece, I have a personal preference, but it's my prerogative - I am not imposing my opinion on anyone else. Secondly, who said anything about deciding who's better? I might have an opinion on that as well, but it is highly irrelevant to this thread.

@@stonefireice6058 Heaven knows where you get your misinformation! What nonsense! Rubinstein played hardly any Rachmaninoff and disparaged him in his memoirs. Fritz Reiner, who conducted Ruby in his Rach recordings (after Rach's death), in turn, was very disparaging of Ruby. If Rach was truly impressed by other pianists it was by Horowitz and later, Gieseking in the 3rd concerto. This probably has better sound, but the Japanese issued so many more recordings of Russian artists than either the Americans or Europeans. The Russian artists of course performed in Japan quite frequently and even today, certain Russian artists perform in Japan well before America. But to me, the Bah-Siloti from this recital is the best of all of his - and to me, he is the father of the work (as a performer). The same can be said the the Medtner - which again, perhaps one can say Gilels was the father of as performer. It is just a perfect performance. Sure, there is much more wonderful performances here. But the Back-Siloti and Medtner I think represent by far Gilels' best performances of the works - which of course he frequently performed several times. For me, and this is just for me, this may be the last of his greatest playing - as it already showed his shift from the tiger of the Liszt Sonata and Rachmaninoff 3rd and Beethoven Piano Concertos and Appassionata pre-1969 to the Szell Beethoven Piano Concertos and the DG Beethoven and Brahms recordings (compare with the Reiner in the 2nd, almost not the same pianist in the least). Thus, I think this recital is one of his last great performances. Many will disagree, to which I will always say - how one can like both the 1950s and 1960s Beethoven sonatas AND the DG Sonatas. You have to pick one Emil you like, in my view. I like the younger Emil.

Он не знал, что так нельзя делать и это совершенно несовместимые вещи. ))) Вот Вас-то тогда рядом с ним не было, вразумить)).Правда, отдельных частей и отдельных вариаций здесь нет.

God, the Medtner is awful. Just goes to show the difference between composing and performing: a musician of Gilel's caliber -- for me, he is unrivaled -- nonetheless has limits of discernment

Eighty minutes of a solo piano recital, becomes a bit tedious.

Really? Sometimes I just like to lay back on my recliner and close me eyes and listen to him play. When I open my eyes again I feel calm and relaxed. Maybe we just live different lives. =)

Appreciating the art of an instrumental recital is not for the faint of heart or mind. It takes desire, perseverance and discernment to be an appreciative audience which is not only enjoying the performance but appreciating it for what it is or isn't. I'm glad that artists such as Gilels give audiences a valid reason to continue to develop their listening skills and in turn are rewarded by a high level of artistic excellence.
