For content, Emilia has the thought process and small confidence of a child. Without Puk or Subaru to reassure her, she makes really bad mistakes. She failed the trial, the villagers lost faith in her and she never got Subaru's letter of encouragement. In a panic, she decided to take the trial multiple times. One run of the trial is mentally taxing. Over and over again broke her mind.

Subaru: so Emilia, where's Puck? Emilia: who? Subaru: Oh..... Oh no......

For anyone wondering this IS emilia she is not possessed by the witch just mind broken

So the anime didn’t say this, but in the novel, this is mind broken Emilia. Remember how Subaru left a note for her? Someone got the note before Emilia. Imagine the one person you always rely on disappearing without saying anything. Emilia is mentally weak which is why she always seeks courage and approval from others. Because she thinks Subaru abandoned her and left, she took the trial repeatedly, over and over and over again. The first time made her break down in tears. Imagine taking that trial repeatedly. What you see in this clip is her after she’s taken it several times repeatedly. The person she relied on most seemingly disappeared and left her mentally unstable. She is not possessed, she’s just mentally unstable, basically a yandere. This is what would happen to Emilia if Subaru ever decided to leave her.

For anyone wondering why Emilia is like this, she was isolated for a few days all alone with no emotional crutch from neither Subaru or Puck. She is not possessed, just driven insane by trying the same thing over and over with no support and while being in complete isloation for 2-3 days. When Subaru came back to her, she finally realized how incredibly weak and pathetic she is for not being able to do anything by herself.

My favorite/worst part of the broken Emilia thing is how when Subaru comes back from getting eaten by the rabbits in the post credits. The scene moves to a first person view of Subaru and you can briefly see Emilia clutching onto Subaru’s warmup jacket like it’s a safety blanket or a plush toy. It just goes to show how far Emilia has been pushed and how she’s just clinging onto as much hope as she possibly can. It’s a small and brief moment that took me a couple rewatches to catch so it’s very easy to miss, but it just highlights the attention to detail great shows like Re:Zero puts into its characters

It took me some time to realise that she wasn’t possessed, mind controlled or replaced by someone else just broken

An important detail that they left out from the anime was the reason why Emilia turned out like this. She's really insane, not possessed by the witch. While Subaru was gone, Emilia kept undergoing the trial over and over. We saw what happened after she did it once. Of course repeatedly doing it would end up completely destroying her mental state.

I went into Re:Zero knowing nothing about it after the first season ended with Subaru telling Emilia he loves her. I figured that the story was over for good and it all ends with a happy ending. But now oof... boy is ignorance bliss.

Mad props to Subaru, the most mentally resilient anime character I know.

This has to be one of the most shocking episodes in my opinion, next to the episode that has Betelgeuse's first appearance. It's just real shocking and mesmerizing how Roswaal was able to deduce Subaru's secret, and how he wasn't afraid of his own demise. The most shocking part has to be the ending. Even though Emilia is there to comfort him by allowing him to lay in her lap, he still feels lonely and unable to do a thing. Really great episode, and considering the fact that the people behind this are all working from home, that isn't an understatement.

hearing these words from her like this was such a gutpunsh. no matter how many times he will restart, nor how much he tries, THIS will always be the first time for him that emilia said these words to him.

If you just saw the most recent episode you'd understand just how deep and scary it is that she kissed him... She was prepared to have his kid even if he passed away. 😶

I don’t know why I love this episode and the next one the most in the season. I believe it is because of this scene and the end scene with her again. It shows that she literally went insane and kept trying to do the challenge and kept crying and losing her mind, to the point where she was not even doing the challenge when Subaru entered, probably meaning that she failed the challenge all together. She also waited to Subaru and thought that he was the only one who loved her and was there for her. Just this scene alone makes me wonder what it would be if she was there for days on end.

This is why overly nice people scare people away there is always a hidden demon they don't know about lurking in the shadows then when the person becomes too stressed the person snaps and the demon comes out all at once. If Emilia let someone else do the trial and admit it is too much stress and let herself rest, this wouldn't have happened. Now she sees Suburau as someone who can save her from all this and doesn't see him as a person but whatever she sees him as in her head.
