Stephen Colbert took over as host of The Late Show on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015. Colbert is best known for his work as a television host, writer, actor, and producer, and best known for his charity work teaching English as a second language on Tunisian date farms. Prior to joining the CBS family -- and being officially adopted by network president Les Moonves -- Colbert helmed “The Colbert Report,” which aired nearly 1,500 episodes and required Stephen to wear nearly 1,500 different neckties. The program received two Peabody Awards, two Grammy Awards, and several unwelcome shoulder massages. It won two Emmys for Outstanding Variety Series in 2013 and 2014, both of which appear to have been lost in the move. Colbert is pronounced koʊlˈbɛər, according to Wikipedia. His understudy is William Cavanaugh, who will be hosting The Late Show approximately one third of the time. Good luck, Bill!"

'Mid-Atlantic' is the early to mid-20th Century accent adopted by the New England aristocracy, intellectuals and actors that is a mix of British and American pronunciation, which is why we can't place FDR's accent today. Sideshow Bob on the Simpsons has one.

LOL the baseball cap thing is the same in Australia. Well obviously some people wear them but it's mostly just children. You rarely see fully grown men wearing them. But in the US it's totally normal to see a 30 or 40 year old man wearing one.

kelly morgan There are Brits and there are Brits. Some are nice, while some are just plain nasty. Nothing to do with where they are born. Same as in the US and everywhere for that matter. There are arse/assholes and pleasant people in all countries. We need to remember that people are people wherever you go. Hating on everyone from one nation is absurd. The US was in the midst of an economic depression and wasn't a colonial nation (the US's military was smaller than Romania's in 1939) with a massive standing military. WWII looked precisely like the same 90 billion other European Imperial wars that had infected Europe for centuries, and cost Americans needless deaths in WWI. This bullshit about "pure evil" wasn't fully known until 1945 moron, to wrap Britain up in righteousness is laughable considering this. If Germany was some sort of "pure evil" that had to be stopped in British minds, they wouldn't have engaged in the "Phoney War", shruggingly sacrificing Poland, and giving Germany a full head of steam before reacting. It's a clever way how you just ignore reality and the reactions and factors which actually determined the reactions of allies. The US was pouring aid to Europe, taking up defense of perimeter Europe and building up its forces well before (The US signed the Atlantic Charter IN 1941 BEFORE PEARL HARBOR MORON) Pearl Harbor dipshit. Your sense of history is ignorant and infantile. In fact, you essentially know nothing about WWII. The US gave as much as it could, as soon as it could. The US was in Africa in 1942 (American commanders wanted to assault Europe in 42, it was Churchill who, wisely, wanted the US to start in AFrica and cinch down on Germany towards Europe like a "closing fist"), it had already been sending aid, defending Iceland, building for war since Britain finally decided to fight after dithering during The Phoney War. It was Britain and France's moronic, botched, handling of Germany following WWI which created the very conditions which gave rise to the Third Reich and British and French dawdling in the opening stages of WWII which prolonged it

Britain was on its last legs before the US and western states intervened, getting bombed on the daily. Even before the declaration of war, the US was supplying Britain with vital aid and resources The US didn't single handily win the war but It definitely saved Britain from assured destruction.

I see a lot of people commenting about the ww2 joke. As a Brit, I don't mind Americans thinking that. I just hope Americans remember Four things. ONE: America only entered the war after Germany declared war on them. TWO: Germany was developing a nuke, and it's target was going to be America, New York, and DC were the likely targets. THREE: Germany wanted peace with the UK, Hitler respected the British Empire, and wanted nothing more than to be Allies with GB, he would have made peace any day of the week. FOUR: America drove the UK to the brink of bankruptcy, we had food rationing for 10 years after the war ended as we had to sell everything we made to pay back the USA. Everything the US supplied to the UK with was sold at an inflated cost. The USA enjoyed a Golden age from the wealth made during the war. Make what ever conclusion you will of these facts, if you still think you saved us I wont argue.

"Quite good" in Germany is actually a compliment. "It was quite good" is probably more of a compliment than simply saying "It was good". ;)

That depends entirely on how you translate it. If it stands for "ziemlich" then yes, it was more than just good. If it stands for "ganz" then it wasn't trash but it wasn't a masterpiece either. And if it stands for "wirklich" or "echt" then it was, indeed, excellent. It might still differ from region to region. Plus, you'd need to consider what intonation was used.

"Es war echt ganz gut" emphasises that you're surprised by how good it was. Please don't get me wrong, I don't mean to offend you. My point is, it's problematic to make such a general statement. It's a massive pet peeve of mine since I'm a translator and interpreter. There are a multitude of different versions you could use to translate "quite" and it all depends on context (and target group).

Same in Australia, we tend to understate things, so "it was quite good" or "it was pretty good", probably means "it was very good" :). Like if you ask someone how they are and they say "not bad", they mean "I am fine, thank you" :).

The "Mid-Atlantic" accent was popular in early 20th century among the American upper class and actors. It was basically a combination of British and American. It was not a natural accent, it was only used by people who were trained to do so.

Contrary to general or public belief (often via Hollywood) no one country won the Second World War. The sacrifice was huge from all the allied forces. It was a team effort, no one life given was more or less valuable than the other. Britain was desperate for America's help and in December 1941 they joined the combined effort. Our great and grandparents generations paid a huge price for both world wars. It's sad to see Stephen's remark to Emily has been taken out of context (judging by the comments).

Ever is a bit of an over exaggeration but for the most part there is a lot of anti-US rhetoric online. More than I ever realized which is why I think Americans try to overcompensate and it just ends up pissing people off more. I mean Stephen made one and look at the reaction of people in the comments section.
