I'm still Noob, this helps shed light on the process and why of some of this stuff. My boat as of now is a van and I hope it never has maritime issues, unless I build a platform for that. I dig boats though and the ocean, which may be a while off for me as an owner operator. Who knows.

Thanks Braith. Yes, and all the components are available. I was concerned that people would be put off about the small size but I went for small to not waste valuable boat space. And figured people would realize that cell phones are tiny and powerful. It's all about the software!

@@EmilyAndClark The amount of surface mounting space is incredibly limited in my boat. Additionally I detest attaching more electrical in the cabin on grand mahogany. I could easily reconfigure the components into a round or square gauge style. Waterproof housing is all I can see to improve.

Nice video Clark. Appreciate the effort on this device. I especially like the single knob interface. You may want to address an important consideration *especially* if this is drifting towards DIY assembly etc. Fusing. Especially the voltage sense lines. Your video regarding the boat fire was excellent content and reminds us how important ‘thermal event’ safety is.

Oh yeah. The manual will call for fuses. Just a level of detail I didn't want to include here. I did these videos so people would know what they are buying. After all this is a new concept. I don't expect that anyone would be disappointed upon receiving their bbms to find it calls for fuses. But they might be disappointed finding they have to hot glue the display on to the lid.

A bistable relay would be a good choice. The normal relays take to much current and get hot. There also IGBT transistors out there which can handle several hundred amps. Instead of a Hallsensor I would still prefer a normal shunt because the Hall based sensores become discalibrated by overcurrenting very easy. A simple shurtcut that pops the mainfuse an the readings then are far away from the truth.
@EmilyAndClark
@EmilyAndClark 2 жыл бұрын
I did run into that issue with the Hall sensor. I've added some dynamic recalibration features to the software. So far it's OK but if it poses a problem in other installations I can stop charging for a few seconds and recalibrate when things get near completion. That feature won't be in this version but I'm planning on allowing field software updates.
@simonmasters3295

Totally get this and, like Hyper your commenter, I too would favour shunt sensors. Having just installed five, but not wired them to any electronics it's a tiny bit annoying to go back to a Hall device.

What about using a contactors like the Blue Seas 7700? It’s bistable and has a remote switch which can be used for microcontroller on/off interaction through relays without impacting the switch itself and can be switched manually, and it has a manual lock-out for a technician working in the battery to disable any chance of reconnecting.
@EmilyAndClark
@EmilyAndClark 2 жыл бұрын
It's a bit expensive but sure if you like it my BBMS will control it fine. If you use the lockout control on the Blue Sea you should reboot the bbms. That way it will safely get everything back in sync and recalibrate it's current sensor correctly.

I just took another look at this and noticed it uses high side switching. My BBMS gives low side switching. One would need to convert my negative side signals to positive signals to work with this. Could be done with a p channel MOSFET a diode and a resister for each line. Or, not solid state but, it could be done with two tiny relays. Basically make the relays act as the switches in the blue sea install document. I signal for 150 Ms so loads of thine for the relays to action

Hey Clark thanks for another great video. I have a quick question for you regarding a simple 50 W solar panel which I purchased with a controller included. Is it normal that the solar panel charge manager can handle one lithium battery by itself. I’m using one lithium battery to power a small refrigerator cooler and I have a solar panel to keep that battery charged. Do I need something other than what normally comes with a solar panel in the way of a controller. Thank you
@EmilyAndClark
@EmilyAndClark Жыл бұрын
The "free" regulators tend to just stop voltage at a point and stay there. That will kill li fast. Also not good for lead unless the panel is small relative to the battery. Of course I think the "Victron" approach isn't that healthy for them either but I'm biased

No WE don't. It just cost too much. But an Australian guy recommended reship.com. So we are recommending them or any other re-shipper. Outside the US and Canada we have sent more of these to Australia then any other country.

Do you have a wiring diagram for how I could accomplish adding lithiums to our LA batteries via your BBMS? Many thanks again, David

Sure David. Have a look at the manual. www.emilyandclarksadventure.com/bbms Basically you keep all your current charging systems installed. Just parallel your new li with your house lead with a contactor on the positive wire. The BankManagerPlus controls the contactor to disconnect the li once it's charged and reconnect it when it is needed for service.

Hi Clark, Thank You so very much for your videos on combining lifepo4 with lead acid. This concept makes perfect sense to me. The best of both battery technologies in one! I have a 60 volt mobility scooter that I am considering adding lifpo4 to. I was wondering if I were to build a 19 series lifepo4 and parallel it to the lead acid pack? My charger charges the lead acid to 70 volts. The 19s lifepo4 would be fully charged at 69.35 volts. Would there be anything bad going on with that setup? Thanks Again. 👍 Dan.
@EmilyAndClark
@EmilyAndClark 2 жыл бұрын
Well yes. It's hard to charge li correctly and my device will probably die if exposed to over 60v. I only designed it for 48v systems. You would have to find the current and voltage to shut down charging and shut charging right down when that point is reached. Or you can accept that your Li might not last quite as long as overcharge it a bit. Lots of research ahead if you go down this road.
@1dandandy1
@1dandandy1 2 жыл бұрын
@@EmilyAndClark Thanks Clark. Yup that was what I was wondering. If the BMS could shut down the charging of the lifepo4 at the 3.65 volts per cell and then allow the lead acid to continue charging to the full 70 volts. Thanks for the quick response and hope you have a good day evening.

are the two diodes important on the shallco 300a that connect from the on and off terminals to the common terminal? the manual didn't clearly say how to turn the bi-stable relay off manually so I first wired the positive to the 86b+ terminal and the minus to the 85- common minus terminal through a momentary switch -- but this first blew up my 5A fuse, then my 10A fuse and then I tried without a fuse and it probably blew up the diode since I thought it just needed more current to actuate -- anyway the diodes look like they are shot but are they imporant? when I switched the negative/positive wires it actuates normally and I could turn the bi-stable relay off for finishing the installation
@EmilyAndClark
@EmilyAndClark Ай бұрын
First off to everyone reading this. The engineer chose a fuse size carefully so you can't do something stupid. If you blow a fuse assume you did something wrong and DON'T use a bigger fuse. Those are flyback diodes and are important to protect the final transistors in the controlling device. As long as you use this contactor with a BankManager they are unimportant as I include flyback diodes in the BankManager itself. Remove them as they sometimes fail shorted.

@EmilyAndClark

This is a video about assembling the Gen1 unit. We don't sell them anymore. The Gen2 comes all assembled. You need to add a switch, 3 fuses, and wire. The best way to protect your Li in cold weather is with a BMS. But in a few months I'll be offering a Gen3 unit. It will cost more (the GEN2 will still be available) but will include cold weather Li shutdown, Bluetooth and several other new features. It will have a switch on the case.

As a motorhome owner I am intrigued by this idea and device. I would like to hear from another motorhome owner that is using this device. In particular, does this device protect the lithium when starting the generator (which I would still use for air conditioning, and is started from the house batteries).
@EmilyAndClark
@EmilyAndClark 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. There is a feature that lets you limit the draw on the lithium. When the engine cranks if the draw is too high the li is disconnected until the battery charger brings the lead back up for safe reconnect. We are installing it on my parents RV next month and taking a few months to tour the American West.

Super cool. I'm either creating a cheap "powerwall" from lithium ion (3.7 nominal) cells or I'm doing LiFePo batteries. I'm not sure yet but I'm creating a special project that I need auxiliary battery in my car and some solar charging hopefully may be doable. I'll copy the comment I just wrote someone else about this project: I'm doing a multiple year HH0 (hydrogen and oxygen enhancement) project on my car. I have a huge HHO generator installed and a special PWM 100 AMP rated. I'm seriously hoping someone can help me complete the last 1%. Everything else is finished and very well working. I've driven months and months with HH0 and it's awesomely wonderful. The power system is my struggle, I'm 99%. I simply need to convert a 0.5-1 volts reference signal to: [times 5] to 2.5-5 volts signal the PWM can read. Op-amp or analog curcuit is answer. I'm too new to electronics to quite get this so far. Help? 😢😮😊

As long as you don't use a url I think you are OK. The BBMS is essentially different then a BMS. Please look at the user manual. www.emilyandclarksadventure.com/bankmanager (And yes it's not fair I can type URLs) If you include a thermal sensor hooked to the alternator case and your alternator regulator you should be fine with BBMS protection. The biggest threat to alternators is diode death caused by BMS shutdown. The BBMS approach protects from that.

What the BBMS does in a nutshell is make sure that nothing can overcharge the lithium while allowing your lead to fully charge. It does this without you having to change any of your current charging system.
