great system, I had a 16,000BTU heat pump Marine Aire unit, using a 12v raw sea water pump to circulate water over the condenser copper lines to remove the heat. This kept our 32' Sea ray sundancer entire cabin nice and cool when it was 95 degrees outside. The condensate would drain thru a tube into shower drain compartment with auto float switch.

I saw where a person ended up grafting a mini split onto their boat. They made a cabinet to cover the outside unit to make it look better but was still able to ventilate. Their draw was 850 watts to cool and it came with a soft start to make it run from an inverter.

Love the proof of concept! Thanks for posting this and the potential to acquire the goodies to make our own. I filled out the survey and I'd be open to all 3 choices... The DIY Kit may be the most versatile as I plan to apply it to my Class B Sprinter van RV for my land adventures. My pup/co-pilot will appreciate this when I have to leave him in the van on occasion. I have a really old Marine-Aire unit that was working 2 months ago, but has a leak. I'm planning my cruising for next year and looking at a new Dometic keel cooler unit (12-16k btu) but then I'm stuck on shore power or a generator or my inverter. I've got 200 watts solar now but could go as much as 800-1000. I'm also ready to pull the trigger on LiFePo batteries. I've filled out the survey, please keep me posted!

Living in Vermont... this strikes in my heart

I remember when that compressor came out about 11 years ago. I was blue back then, I can't recall the name of the company that sold it, but it was extremely expensive going for $1,200 just for the compressor alone. The capacity was incredible and was advertised as being able to run an AC and well as a refrigeration system at the same time. Also, setting it up to run was rumored to be beyond the ability of the average person. China came out with a black knock off which runs for about $200 which looks a lot like the model you have. The key I think is to have it pre-charged and on a skid ready to be connected to pre-charged lines like the Cool Blue refrigeration system.

I'm currently building a cargo trailer to camper conversion, we decided to use a Pioneer Mini-Split. We will know in a couple weeks about the wattage numbers and efficiencies. Specs show about 330 watts on the lowest setting, and about 1300 watts on highest. If we can't dial it down low enough to run on solar, we will order one of your systems to add as a sustainable 24/7 system! Great Videos!!!

This is great. From what I've seen out there, a brilliant ground breaking innovation. I've been cramming to learn about solar. I use thermo dynamics to cool my house. I heat one room in winter to save money. My body prefers a warmer climate. I've lived around the world. Always need a way to cool off to survive though. I might end up living in a box truck I'm working on, needs some help, 75 Dodge CB300, but in a boat in Florida or NC would be great. Might end up in a subterranean hovel in the desert. I'm somewhat disabled, rehabbing from a brutal life. I see a lot of people who could use this, just to make a cool place to survive. I'm very handy, but not too smart on AC systems or electrical. I test as genius, but I know I'm stupid in some areas, lol. Brilliant in others. If this is dependent on a massive source of water that would limit the possibilities, if not the applications could be huge, wide and deep. I know I'm going to need this. Don't know if I'm going to be able to afford it for some time. I have an idea what the battery and solar system will cost. I think if your system creates dry air, a small evap system could cool as augmentation, but there goes the dry air, poof, lol.If it dries efficiently enough, using with seperate evaporative cooling might be synergistic (just need a fan and water flow, which is low volume and can be done by gravity by suspended tank) though usually that sort of synergy gets blocked by reality of physics, but sometimes it can be great. If your system would work in a desert with a small water tank, the combination would be almost a no brainer.

System looks great there and so efficient! I just wished I lived where I would need to use A/C more than 3 days a year :(

This is extremely cool and I hope your offering this when I'm finally able to buy my boat and hit the water. I'm about a year out from that yet finances willing and would definitely be interested in two or even three of these units for different spaces on my boat. As long as it isn't to crazy expensive that is. This would also help me when I can finally buy my dream in being able to pick a boat that may not already have AC on it and could save me a ton of money. I´m really interested in this option (and has filled in the form), but I also contemplate an even simpler version where one can attach tubes to and from one or two sleeping bags and only cool and dehumidify the air inside the sleeping bags.

I need this. I want it, it's 4:44am and I'm pouring sweat, my bed is destroyed, if I don't get one people in space will be able to smell me. I've been in Florida for 21 years and I have not acclimated (acclamation is a myth). I don't know which kit I would use, but if it's a bucket of parts the bucket will need drainage or it will fill with sweat before I'm done putting it together.

I really like the full DIY option, and I would go so far as saying separating the parts so someone could purchase just what they need would be handy as well. For example: someone may want to buy a couple compressors and condensers, but use different evaporators. I am very interested in the compressor alone, because I have a different plan for using it.

We have a beautiful CT41 ketch but she retains the days heat so much, its like a sauna at night, so we completely agree with you on this as an issue! Now we have a newborn to look after as well so we are very very keen to get a hold of one of these! Sadly though, we will have to address our battery bank and solar first... Still in the dark ages with the Lead Acid bats...

Clark, first off I'm not trying to step on your turf. I'm "retired" too. What follows is a story of air conditioners on boats. I think it may be worth a read. I'm in Texas and kept a roomy old 23 sailboat on a lake here. My wife and I loved spending the weekends out on the boat spending nights at anchor in a cove. On summer nights it became intolerable for her. One summer I took a sabbatical (semi-voluntary) from working and spent a lot of time on the docks. I'm a geek, lots of physics/chem schooling, and was pondering how to cool my boat w/o running a genset. One day I got a new slip-neighbor. Nice guy, we became friends (i.e., I recruited him as racing crew). Turns out he owns a small air conditioner company building specialized industrial AC units. Interesting... I pestered him with questions about component availability and told him what I was considering. Did he know companies I could look to for components? The next weekend he showed up with a box of the parts I had asked about basically just a heater coil, blower, and a certain type of mechanical thermometer. I built what I later learned is called an ice bank air conditioner. I filled an insulated tub with lots of ice and pumped water over the ice with a tiny live well pump. The mechanical thermometer cycled the pump on and off to maintain a water temperature of about 50F flowing through the "heater" coil. The blower blew cool air into the V-berth. Using that small blower this would provide cooler and dehumidified air to make the 90F Texas nights tolerable for about 6 hours on 50 pounds of ice using one AGM battery that also ran the anchor light. This was the days before lithium. Not high tech but it worked and I shared my math with my new friend. He responded with a job offer. I signed on and went to air conditioner school. 25 years later as a partner in the business we received an offer we could not refuse and sold the business, retired in my 50s. That offer was significantly inspired by the self contained lithium powered AC system I had designed. Naturally there is a non-compete and IP I sold so there is much I cannot discuss. What I can say is that you are on the right track. What you really want to do is better manage your air flow so you can eliminate the fans. Using an efficient BLDC blower that runs whenever the system is on and only cycling the compressor as needed is more efficient. Sleeping in a boat you only need cool air to the face and upper extremities to be comfortable (enough). Think of where a car AC blows, face and hands. Cooling the walls and ceiling do not add comfort but you are totally correct that the air must be constantly moving. BLDC blowers aren't cheap but from China they are less than two $100+ fans and use less power. There must also be _some_ source of fresh air. Humans exhale 20,000-ish PPM CO2 (top of my head number) and begin to show symptoms (drowsiness, discomfort) at about 1,500 PPM. you don't need much fresh air but in a sealed space you need some. If you turn your car onto "Recirc" is still pulls in that minimum. Remember it was CO2 abundance, not O2 deprivation, that almost killed the Apollo 13 astronauts I have chartered cruising boats that used automotive style compressors belt driven from the engine to keep the fridge cold plates frozen with a few hours of engine time in the morning. If I were outfitting a cruising boat today I would seriously consider using a similar system to freeze water for cooling cabins later in the evening. Webasto in Europe markets a system like this for use in the sleeper compartments of big semitrucks after a long day of driving. Those components may well be appropriate for use on a yacht. For me the fascination with ice bank air conditioning stems from the simplicity of rejecting heat when energy is abundant and absorbing heat when it is scarce, kind of like a battery but without so many inefficiencies. Yes, low temp refrigeration is less efficient that high temp AC but that is offset by use of a water cooled condenser. I might consider using a more efficient brazed plate heat exchanger for a condenser and a secondary coolant loop to put the heat into seawater, but that may be overthinking the issue. Application specific observations: The block type TXV in your air handler is poorly calibrated for your compressor capacity (if it is calibrated at all, most are junk). United Refrigeration dealers can help you choose a better one. The small compressor you are using contains little lubricant. If air conditioning a V-berth or other area further from the compressor consider using a _properly sized_ oil separator before the condenser to prevent oil starvation. Adding extra oil to the system must be done with real caution. There is more than fits here to that subject.

Great video. I’m Offgrid and my 5000 btu Air conditioner uses about 38-40amps and I have enough solar to cover that it needs a lot of battery for the night so this would be a cool option for night time.

Most van people have insulated their vans so your unit would be really interesting. Most van self builders would probably do some of the assembly but not complicated wiring etc although some are brainiacs and could assemble a spacecraft in their garage hahaha

Glad to have you sharing this “cool” (your words) idea. Very interested. Will have this over refrigerator. BTW, We were just fine for winter in Bahamas without fridge. Rum not beer. Meat where available. Don’t drink milk. Ate last nights leftovers for lunch next day. Most things in fridge don’t need to be there. We never had butter, Mayo, pickles, eggs, open cat food, ketchup, real maple syrup, mustard, cabbage, carrots. Nothing wrong with many things from a can. Didn’t suffer, wife creative cook.

Those small rotary compressors are compact, but the linear compressor while bulkier are even more efficient. I was googling 'water medium mini-split a couple days ago, and all kinds of variations to see if anyone used water to pass cold from compressor to indoor unit and found nothing. Then youtube recommended this, and I see someone has done it! I was thinking antifreeze, but salt water can go below 0F, good enough for a/c, but not so much for a freezer.

Hey, I do not know you or your channel but this popped up in my feed. I am a maintenance tech at a factory and we have these super small air conditioners that cool down electronics cabinets. These are bigger cabinets than you are imagining though, maybe 2 feet deep by 8 feet high by 12 feet wide, but I am sure there are larger cabinets out there. People could probably size one to whatever size cabin they have if DIY is scary to them. Using saltwater over air for heat exchange is smart though.

So let me preface this with I have fallen in love with heat pumps. Now, my ten year plan involves selling my condo (once its rebuilt from the fire of course) and then buying a boat and moving aboard. Keep in mind I live in New England (Massachusetts actually). So heating my boat is a high priority for me. I am exploring all options on this front, including diesel heaters with radiator pipes leading through out the boat (including under cabinets and bunks and even the lockers) to prevent frozen pipes and the like. I understand you not caring a hill of beans about heat because you’ve given it up for tropical settings. But I just watched an interesting video on heat pumps and in it the video stated that central air systems have 95% the same components as their heat pump cousins. So then the whole process of how a heat pump worked and how it was the same process as air conditioning only there was a reverse feature added that could turn your evaporator into a condenser and vice versa. So naturally, that got me thinking about your system. Why? Because I have a curious mind I guess or because I do enjoy understanding how things work. So, my question is, since you are running your ac only at night, wouldn’t it be better to build a structure outside for your condenser to dump the heat energy your system creates? And how how difficult would it be to convert your system into a heat pump, so it could both heat and cool off batteries?

Seen those compressors on Chines website 12V variable speed mini scroller. Nice to see one in use. I am quite impressed with the duty you got out of it. As an RV person my self. As a fridge engineer by trade that has an all round understanding of Solar batteries and inverters etc. After watching this video considered if using just cold sea water running through a finned heat exchanger in your cabin would be enough. But looks like in your part of the world the sea temperature reaches 26C So would not be very effective.The sea temperature in the UK is between 8C-17C and would work well. But inversely our climate is not as hot as the tropics.

I did see a sailboat that used a window air conditioner that was set up over a hatch. It cooled the main salon and likely had enough power to cool the whole yacht which was about 50 feet in length. There is a KZfaq video on it but I can't remember who did it. I am going to do something similar and run an inverter from lithium batteries with about a 1000 amp-hour capacity. At 13V and 80% discharge, then the available energy is 10,400 W-hr. I have 9 solar panels rated at 195 W each. These are going to go over the cockpit as a sun shade. During the day, the panels will put out a lot of power which is dependent on solar intensity. Even on a bad day, I can get 400W of power on average over the course of the day. A 5000 BTU window air conditioner will draw about 500 watts on high setting and likely 550 watts through the inverter. Overnight, with the air conditioner on low, it likely would draw about 400W all in as an average. For 12 hours, that would use up about 4800 W-hr or less than half the battery capacity. The problem for some yachts will be space and layout. This all takes a lot of real estate. A critical factor is the number of people on board. Each adult male body produces about 80-100W of heat while resting and less while sleeping. As well, there is the additional load of humidity created by the human body. One has to figure that into the equation. Based on that, my window air conditioner will likely not have enough power on low setting for more than 4 adults to maintain a dry comfortable temperature.

I just bought a boat with something very much like this installed. It doesn't appear to be stock as it looks brand new mounted on new lumber in a 35 year old boat. The ducting is run for the most part, and it seems to all be there. I'm lucky I have a friend that is an HVAC specialist and says he can get it going no problem, and parts are everywhere. Fingers crossed 🤞

Watts are never "per hour" unless one literally means that the power consumption is increasing constantly over time. In ten hours, so by morning, you'd be drawing half a kilowatt. You probably meant it draws 50 watthours per hour (50 Wh/h), which is a 50 watt average power consumption due to drawing more (185 W) when it does run but having that 28% duty cycle once the temperature set point has been reached. That match checks out by the way: 185 W * 0.28 = 52 W so it's bang on. That's a good system you've got there! It's doing the most with the least invested in terms of money and consumed in energy over its service life, and you know exactly how it's put together! Major kudos.

Originally I planed to add a 4000 btu to our sleeping cabin (Leopard 40).My figure was about 250 to 300 amp hours in a 8 hour period, It might have proven to be less in real time test but it was going to definitely be too robust and a power hog. Your solution looks like it fits the bill for a small cabin like mine. Critical charge looks like you can tune it for maximum efficiency. I'm running on lithium but I still need to add a few more batteries( and more solar ) to add the refrigeration I want. I like the idea of box of parts as I have all the equipment(and EPA license)to put it together.
