In 2007 he had an overdose and said he was hours away from death. He went into a downward spiral after the death of his longest childhood friend “proof” and it almost killed him. It was so bad that he had to re learn how to walk, talk, write and rap.

This happened to me. Last recount I had was standing in check out line at a grocery store. I woke up two days later an intensive care with a tube down on the road and tied down. Just a gown on. My wife at the time informed me that when I was loaded into the back of the ambulance I quit breathing and so they had to race the hospital and revive me.I didn't have the experience of the song of being able to see them and within myself see what was going on I was out everything was black until Tuesday . That's the day I woke up. When I first heard this song there's a part in there but he said he woke up it was Tuesday and that struck a cord with me. He doesn't talk about gang life. He talks about life. There is more broken homes than there are gangs.

You have to listen to the official audio version. When he says "To rewrite a mistake, I'm rewinding the tape" at the end ,He then goes on with another verse that is an alternate reality where he doesn't pop the pills and overdoses (which he actually did and the song is about) but instead in the alternate reality makes the right decision and he flushes them down the toilet.

Yeah, he overdosed around Christmas time in 2007. If you listen to his album relapse that he released around 2009 I believe he speaks about that On "DejaVu" and "You're never Over" and the following album Recovery too. But Around 2004-2006 I believe he started using drugs pretty heavily. After he released his album Ecore(Mostly he produced most songs on the album, one of my favorites) in 2004 I believe he started to use alot more drugs and He decided to work on getting sober and he was struggling with how huge his success was around this time it was the biggest in his career and how much it was effecting him mentally and his at home life. He will always be huge but that time was the biggest. He ended up canceling his whole tour and retiring until 2009 whenever he released Relapse. He focused on his family and kids and was trying to give them a more normal life. In 2006 his best friend Proof died from a shooting and Eminem went overboard on drugs and OD'd around Christmas 2007 and they brought him back. He made it to the hospital and got through it. But he didn't get fully clean until around end of 2009 I think whenever relapse was done. Throughout his whole career he raised his daughter and his niece who he adopted and he basically took guardenship over his little brother Nathan from his Mom and dealing with his wife's drug problems and I believe she was in and out if jail a few times for other reasons and in a few of his songs he speaks on her trying to cut her wrists in front of the kids all while trying to maintain his career that blew up to make him one of the world's biggest artist. So ever since he came back out after 2009 he doesn't really tour anymore and even when he records at the studio he treats it like a 9-5 job and cuts off and goes home. What's always set him apart is his honesty in his music and how he's not afraid to go there on many levels. I would also recommend listening to "Leaving heaven" off of his latest album he talks about his biological dad who passed away a little while ago. Pretty good song. Their are honestly too many to list but if I had to make a list it would be those songs I mentioned plus these. Darkness with video, Stan with official video, cleaning out my closet with video, sing for the moment, going through changes, not afraid, no love video , space bound video, 25 to life, walk on water with video, river with video, framed with video. And many more.

This is a true story. He overdosed and nearly died, was in the hospital on Christmas which is also Hailie’s birthday He almost died from an overdosed in 2007...Rewinding the tape, is basically him changing his faith, when he realises he is going to survive. So he changes the ending of "Castle"...He is no longer going to feel sorry for himself and try to self destruct, he is gonna fight back this was obviously on his 2017 album Revival but Em went on to survive and created Recovery etc. glad Em is still alive he could’ve went out sad but my mans just performed with his Idol LL Cool J at the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame I know that was a big moment for Marshall also just to clarify when Em says “Doody” that’s his Best Friend Proof him and Marshall use to call each other that lol EM THE GOAT OF HIP HOP FOREVER His Penmanship Is Unmatched His Storytelling Is Def On 9000!🙇🏽‍♂️✍🏽🐐🌟💯

Aw no Larry, this version messed the ultimate ending up for you. Basically yeah he's on his death bed from an over dose he had (which is at the end of the CASTLE song you reacted too) now the important message and part of this song AROSE is all about rewinding the tape. Rewinding time to the part where he took the pills that causes the overdose at the end of CASTLE and faints to the floor. At the end of AROSE in the original you hear a tape being rewinded after he says at the end of AROSE "I'm rewinding the tape" . This takes you back to the end of the CASTLE song but he's changed the ending of his fate. The lyrics have changed and he ends up throwing the pills in the toilet and flushing them away. He's a genius at his craft, the emotion in his voice in AROSE and the creativity behind both songs from real life experience is just.... no words.

This is his story. When he's talking about keeping the legacy alive he's talking about his best friend DeShaun Dupree "PROOF" Holton who got killed in 2006. This event really destroyed Eminem. He already had drug issues but now with depression he couldn't sleep, so he would take sleeping pills to help himself and would take other pills to help himself during the day too. Overtime, tolerance builds up and it got out of hand. He overdosed 1 or 2 days before his daughter's birthday in 2007, she was born 26 of december so it was also christmas. He said in an interview that all of his organs were shutting down and he was a couple hours away from dying. He got a lot of damages from this as he had to relearn how to talk, write, rap... Here's other songs that you could react to that have nice story telling and have two or three meanings: - 25 to life - Never love again - Darkness (if possible watch the music video for this one) You could also react to Legacy where he talks about his past and use the same rhyme scheme through the whole song which is insanely hard to do. He said and I quote "I wanted to challenge myself a little with the writting"

Alot of people did not like Revival. I really liked it. I feel like it is a very personal album... It almost seems like most of the songs are for himself and his family. And he has a lost of real, personal stuff to say on it. These two songs back to back are amazing. This is a true story. Eminem overdosed the same weekend that Heath Ledger did. If he was any less than 2 hours from making it to the hospital he would have been dead. But he pulled through, went into rehab and has been clean and sober for nearly 15 years now. He may be even better than before, thats an on going debate... one thing that can't be debated, he's a GOAT. You missed the best part of the song. When he says rewind the tape... it goes back to Castle.

I think the album would have been much better received if Eminem didn't deep-dive into politics on a few songs. I realize it's nothing new for him, with "White America", "Mosh" and others in the past, I just think most people were burnt out on the topic by that point and just wanted the escape. They weren't looking to be preached to at that point. But honestly, it's only like 3-4 songs that really mention it.

BACKGROUND info On the Song "Arose": There's an ending part of the official song that is similar to the one in "Castle" but a different outcome so I recommend you listen to it since this version cut it out. Also, this is a true story that happened to Eminem. At the end of "Castle", Eminem takes some pills and you can hear a thud and a groan (falls on the floor after overdosing). In this song, he's in the hospital and talks about his thoughts and emotions throughout this experience of unconsciousness after the apparent overdose. He mentions "Proof" who was his best friend that supported Eminem's career, but he was eventually killed in 2006 and that's what led to Eminem's pill addiction to cope with the loss.

Lost my dad to addiction. He's still alive, but he hasn't contacted me in years. He was absent as a kid, but got back in touch when I was a teen. He was here-and-gone. He seemed like he wasn't there even when he was physically. Addiction, mainly gambling, stole 90% of his attention. He wanted to be a good dad, but never quite managed to keep focus on what was important. He was invited to my wedding 4 years ago. That was the last time I heard from him. He never turned up and hasn't spoken to me since. Now he has a granddaughter. He knows she exists. He knows how to get in touch. But he doesn't. And he never replies when I've reached out in the past. I know he's still alive, so this isnt the same.. but this song resonated with me. I've already lost him.

I agree with reviewing Cleaning out my closet then Headlights. It’s like a dis song then apology about his mom. He raps a lot about his mom early in his career. He was a Victim of munchausen syndrome by proxy. She neglected him, doped him up on drugs as a kid, and even sued him when he started his rap career. Hope this helps. Highly enjoying your react videos, brings so much more depth to these songs we feel like we already know

Just listened to your story at the end. Loved it. My parents divorced when I was 10. They dealt with eachother cordially for a long time and even got back together a couple times for short spurts. Now, 25 years later they have grandchildren together and they are best friends. I am proud of them for realizing that the love for eachother doesn't mean they have to be together. Thank you so much for sharing something so personal. You just brought in a lifelong fan :)

WOW Chris. What a beautiful story you got for us. Your mother must be one extraordinary woman. To go through all that and still not be black with anger and hate takes something special. It kinda makes me think that she maybe is a strong christian, with a set of values that were able to over-shadow all that negative? Giving her the strength and wisdom to be able to see the PERSON, and not let that person be defined merely by it's weaknesses (because we all have them). There must have been much good in your father, to be able to make a woman like her fall for him in the first place. Sometimes I think it is THOSE values you should think of when the going gets tough, but it is not an easy task, by any stretch of the imagination. To catch life's curveball and then put it in your inner pocket is no small feat. What a great teacher in life! Give her a hug from me when the Covid bugger is properly fought off, will you ? And the song? MAD. Nothing but respect for that guy. Respect where respect is due, right ? I hope you've been able to recover somewhat again after the live? Your last message scared me tbh. Make sure to get enough rest, Chris. (But I still believe psychosomatics is real. It's just a matter of finding the right balance I guess. I don't think you can fight Covid off by willpower alone.) Take care, buddy !

yeah he over dosed in 2007, he nearly died. From what i pieced together all the circumstances around the song are true, and this verse is what went through his mind put into a song from that day. Obviously he didnt die but the doctors told him if they hadnt got him to the hospital the difference of a few hours would have been him dieing. This happened near xmas time, haileys birthday is sometime in december so he missed her birthday. for more clarity proof is his childhood friend who was also in d12, proof or "doody" which was a nickname was murdered at a bar around this time over a game of pool. The details of that incident are pretty vague. His brother is called nate, his dad left when he was 1 year old, he doesnt get along with his mom. Think thats all you really need to know. btw whatever version you reacted to is missing an entire verse after he rewinds the tape.

So he has his real daughter Hailie with twice divorced ex-wife Kim Scott, and adopted Kim's sister Dawn's real daughter Alaina (Laney) his blood niece as his own when she was younger. Alaina may not remember her birth mom as she was very young when Em adopted her. Dawn lost her life to over.dos.ing on hard d.r.u.gs some years back. First it was just Hailie and he sang about her on his third album The Eminem Show on a song called Hailie's Song. Then For a while it was just them 2. The ones he sings about on his fourth album and at the time final album Encore in a song called Mockingbird, and the following year on his greatest hits collection's song When I'm Gone. When the drugs were taking hold of him during this era. He then also later adopted his ex-wife's daughter she had with another man while they were only separated. I mean that brings a whole new meaning to swallowing your pride and being the better man. 1 biological daughter, 1 adopted niece turned "daughter", 1 adopted child turned "daughter", plus your lil bro who your crazy pilled out mom lost to foster care... That's 4 total kids Em was raising. Too All While dealing with fame pressures having the #1 album, #1 movie, #1 soundtrack and #1 hit single from said soundtrack of said movie the guy in 2002 became the biggest rapper of all time. Just completely blew up. Then getting on painkillers to deal with said fame pressures and your label starts killing your run firing all your artists making you so ticked you want to retire and almost put out a retiring album. Then your best friend from your group gets murdered unarmed shooting pool with no known motive while the news spins a different story and you pull out of current European leg of your tour claiming exhaustion but really you are spiraling out of control with the pills and later in self imposed exile hiatus almost end your own self. I mean the legend of what happened between 2002-2009 is just so terrible. I mean his first album SSLP was silly and goofy sure dope raps but prankster stuff, not GOAT level, then Forgot About Dre off 2001 and then MMLP with Dre behind him was a smash and put him on the map as a serious rapper with a hit album that captured the teen angst of the time along with rock/rap fusion genre of the time, then his D12 stint in 01, but then 2002 happened. Two Diamond albums in the process. Only 7 artists on that list. He didn't know how to deal and became a hermit, bought the Kmart Mansion erected a huge fence surrounding the property and put a studio in the basement and invited all his friends over to play basketball in the converted tennis court. He never had to leave his house again. He raised all the kids there. House was huge. You can see it on Google maps. But Now that the kids are raised and moved out and friends no longer visit after Proof's death and break up of D12, a few yrs back he sold it no longer needing it and moved into a smaller house on a more residential block closer to Detroit. And We as fans are glad he came back to hip-hop but now he has to deal with this negative agenda by the cornball industry to push him out of the culture and stop having him win everything. Billboard changed criteria for Artist of the 2010s because he was set to win the second decade in a row. I mean come on. All that backlash when he is the best of the best is a combined agenda. He clearly is in defiance of and will not back down.

Although you seem to be a fan of his meaningful music, I am also intrigued to see you react to some more of his ‘comedic/less serious’ songs One in perticular being ‘The Real Slim Shady’, it’s a little bit of edgy humor so if you aren’t into that then it’s probably not for you. Also, ‘The Way I Am’ is one of his greatest songs (his best in my opinion), so a reaction on that would be cool to see as well. I enjoy your reactions, can’t wait to see more.

You did a great job. It's always nice to find out that people are willing to check something outside their comfort zone. You can love or hate Eminem. There is nothing between. Sometimes his great songs are overshadowed by some funny ones he wrote years ago. Eminem is best story teller since day 1. He goes thru really bad days and still be able to build great career. His songs are something else. Outside of excellent rap skills he has some unparalleled depth in lyrics. Well because his songs are true. If You can, and want to You should check and maybe record the reactions from two songs with Rihanna ( monster and love the way you lie) and some older ones like 'cleaning out my closet', 'sing for the moment' or 'like toy soldier' As a big country music fan I would love to see some Chris Stapleton's songs as well. Best wishes from Poland! Mark

When Em got sober I was kinda trying at the same time. His music helped get me through a lot of stuff. I also almost died multiple times from alcohol abuse. Along with plenty of other people who helped me his music could always pick me up or give me the co disenfranchised to say to myself “ I got this.” Now I’m 6 years sober in August and have a son named Marshall. Lol. I also grew up like him being the only white boy around. I’m sure he’s helped plenty others in different ways but that’s my story when it comes to Em and his music. Hope everyone trying to get or stay sober just keeps trying. That’s what counts is to keep trying. That’s all you can do. Great reaction as well sorry for my soap box comment. Lol

The remained friends and my mom still says my dad is/was her soulmate she still loved him(as he did her) but couldn’t live with the alcohol anymore. My dad was diagnosed with cancer after their divorce but my mother stood by his side taking him to appointments and everything. We lost him in 2020 and the heartbreak my mom feels is indescribable.

I guess u entered the World of an artist who have so much to offer. Thats why everyone who have an idea about rap even other famous artist see him as the goat. He always tried to stay real, express his Feelings and tell us his whole Story in his lyrics. Which helped a lot of us through tough times, by sharing and giving us hope. This is what good rap is about deepness, authenticity and honesty. I think alot of older people shooting against rap because they never saw this side before. Like u did. So glad u found this music and reacting to it, make me smile alot. I can see my reactions when I first listen to these songs through u and till today I have literally chills when listening to them (after years and even decades)

Hey Larry, just wanted to say that I've been an Eminem fan for as long as I can remember. I've probably listened to "Stan", "When I'm Gone" and "Mokingbird" a thousand times each lol. I found your channel tonight and watched all your Eminem reactions and they made me so incredibly happy! I feel like I'm sharing something that is so important in my life with someone who is open minded and interested. If my dad spoke better english, I wish he could discover Slim like you are right now and I'm sure he would love it too. Anyways, just wanted to thank you since I'm falling back in love with these incredible songs by watching you discover how lyrically magical they are. You should react to "Sing for the moment" which is my favorite. I suggest you also review Headlights, but to understand the song, you'd have to listen to "Cleaning out my closet". It's a harsh one to hear, but I think it will help you understand the man's pain and rage and how he eventually healed. My relationship with my mother wasn't always easy but headlights opened up my eyes and made me realize the luck that I have that she's now part of my life. Anyways, good night and thank your son from us! Ps : That story about your mom was awesome, what a woman! ;)
