This was Eminems response to his first taste of Fame, everyone wanted to meet him, be him, interview him, pulling him in every direction, record companies asking him for the next hit song/album. He always wanted to make it big and become famous but didn't realize the consequences of that fame, so he made this song to get his feelings off his chest. He was trying to be a Dad and work on his relationship with Kim but was constantly getting harassed by fans and media and expected to be away from home.

Well yes and no, it's A Lot about how much pressure was put from outside sources for him being controversial, so it tackles that side kinda like saying that this is me, I'm not doing this just for shock-value or turning kids into satan worshippers or whatever people tought. It humanizes him to some extent and says that his art isn't just some cimic but.. him being himself. It's hard to remember or fathom now all these years later how as big of a menace he was made out to be, like a legit danger to the public. It was those times when Tarantino got in so many interviews sh!t for so called giving people ideas from violence in his movies, since there was this heavy beleave that certain kinda art can make you into something bad (Columbine ramping it again up, wasn't a new thing), which is in some ways true that art defininetly can influence you but the beleaf that kids would turn out horrible because of him was on steroids. Straight up saying that Em is destroying the youth. Even the chorus says that the radio won't play him even tho he was the biggest artist (which isn't completely true, he was played but it's painting a picture of exactly certain kinda people seeing him as lucifer). Also a reason for Marilyn cameo because he got the same criticism all the time. Also it's somewhat about how the change in his lifestyle of becoming famous isn't all good even tho again, especially back then even saying so was taken as complaining about nothing and still to some extent today is. So what can you say to all that, well I am the way I am and it is just what it is.

I turned on the radio. And it was Em lose yourself. I was transformed. My anxiety left. I drove. I passed. I went on to drive a semi truck for yrs with no accidents etc. Some times you just gotta lose yourself in the moment. You never do know when its gonna go.

He drew his line in the sand with this song early on in his career. He’s a rap God, but he’s a family man first, as his fans we know it and respect him for it. He’s not trying to alienate his fans, if you see him in public give him a nod, and say you love his music in passing, don’t try to grab him and get a selfie or and autograph. There’s a time and a place for that.

a similar song (in topic, not sound) is Xzibit's "Approach Me" ft Eminem... "you don't know me, and I don't know you, so don't approach me" ; "It's not that I don't like you, it's that when I'm not behind the mic I'm a person just like you". It also goes more into detail about how he got harassed: he talks about people following their ambulance from Kim's suicide attempts, about cars honking in front of the house, kids leaking his address on the internet etc., as well as stating that he honestly felt like chasing them away with guns. Another memorable line is "if I can hold onto my private life for five minutes longer I might be able to get my wife to put down this knife and just calm her". Xzibit's verse is also dope but he mainly talks about how he doesn't know who to trust and how his baby mother wasn't letting him see his child, not necessarily being harassed by fans.

I have to say stull waiting for you to react on "Guilty conscience" (the song mentioned in this song) when eminem came out with his "shady" persona i wasnt a big fan, i was like you, didnt give rap a second thought. Then i heard guulty conscience and what a well put together masterpiece it was. It got criticised by the topics it used which is ridiculous. The haters jumping on him glorifying criminal acts was just bull and they obviously were ignorant on how well crafted the song was. This got me listening to more eminem, not because he was "cool" or because he cussed but because i identified with his amazing portrayal of life events and the fact he doesnt sugar coat it but also hes not in your face about it, he does it in such a charming, sometimes humouristic way but is always on point wether cleverly disguised or point blank straight up about things

That skit in the beginning where the guy tells Em to change the album or he's out, that was played by Steve Berman who's Interscope's vice chairman. He was on the Paul's podcast (Paul is Em's manager) which they did as an extra to Em's new greatest hits album, Curtain Call 2. Steve talks about the skits that he's done for Em's albums and basically the idea behind this one was to show, in an ironic way, that they were aware of how controversial the things Em rapped about were, they wanted to show that the "adults" of the label knew what Em was doing and that they knew there would be backlash. Steve says on the podcast that he loves Em and has enormous respect for his art. He said he had a hard time recording these and making them sound legit:))) hope this gives some more insight for the song:)

On this track Em literally becomes the percussion of the beat and it’s so hard to do that as a rapper to keep a constant rhythm throughout an entire song rather than switch it up this is why Eminem Is not only The Goat Of Hip Hop but One Of The Greatest Music Artist To Ever Live! I know for a lot of people this was when they started taking Em seriously. It was the second single off his second major label album, and a lot of people who'd written him off as a gimmick after his first album which was mostly his fictional storytelling stuff, and his two big singles My Name Is and The Real Slim Shady which were both joke-y songs, began to realize that he was a lot deeper than he'd previously revealed. This was definitely his first single that showed his more introspective side, and even though it wasn't a particularly huge hit I think it was pivotal in his growth as a true superstar. As a side note, others have probably mentioned this but it was also the very first beat he made himself which is astonishing to consider, because it's extremely good and matches to his delivery superbly.

This was at the height of Em's controversy and his fame was skyrocketing. True to form he was honest with his emotions and its one of the things we love about him! I don't think he'd mind fans saying hi but when on the toilet- yeah... no. Lol. Same as when with family... I think because we have constant and immediate access to celebrities via platforms such as this, there's a sense of entitlement with some in that if we "made them" we own them in a sense, and thats why so many get hostile when a celebrity doesnt treat them the way they expect them to. It's a very strange attribute of humans. Lol. Em was also constantly under fire in the news because his lyrics were looked at as offensive and teaching children bad things instead of looking at the fuller picture, innuendos, and strong messages. Eminem clearly asks in this song- why is it (columbine) now such a huge story because of it being in an upper class, white city when this has been occuring elsewhere?? Why is it being blamed on a celebrity (Marilyn) instead of looking at the far deeper societal issues at play?? I wasn't hearing other white artists discussing these issues who were making me look outside of the very narrow viewpoints taught by the middle class white society I was in. I just wasn't. His whiteness helped with that- and he alludes to this in some of his other tracks as well. How he's aware his whiteness has propelled him to places that it didn't with black artists that he deemed (deems) as better than himself. Even with all of his commercial success I feel he is hugely underrated.

Another fantastic reaction Chris! This one is an Eminem classic. Others have explained his insane rise / level of fame at this point, he was hounded nonstop (like Princess Diana level) mixed with his own demons, family struggles & introverted personality- you can just feel he was about to explode. I’ll just add that this classic has been used in English classes to compare Shakespeare and Em’s use of Iambic Pentameter 🤯. Don’t worry, I think u could say hello if u ran into him these days, he’s in a much better place emotionally (but I can’t guarantee he won’t snap if someone does something foolish so mind ur Ps & Qs 😛)

Your talk about the censorship issue reminds me of when i read Ems book and he was saying how he didn't understand it when the radio stations said he needed to rewrite some of his lyrics because he couldn't swear or say certain things and he was thinking "I've been through all this shit in my life and they're telling me i can't say a bad word on the radio?" It was so alien to him and he couldn't understand how good people's lives must be where they didn't want to hear a bad word, or hearing a bad word was the worse thing that had happened in their lives.

i can't remember the name of the video i watched on here a couple of months back but it was about Eminem and his life. my overwhelming thought after was that his alter ego Slim Shady was created by Eminem because that is what society wanted. no one would give him his big break until he started with the Slim Shady stuff and it resulted in negative stereotypes about him. until you hear songs like when i'm gone/not afraid/beautiful where he shows his depth do you realise he was held down and had to create the monster and go to that mindset to make anything of himself.

For me even tho Em never "saved" me from any hardships, i still consider him a big part of my life since he formed the man i am today, with the values and believes he shared with me.

I think it's best to assume that anything you listen to from Eminem has parental warnings and all the good stuff lol Edited to add, it took Paul a few years to figure out he was not going to get Eminem to change a damn thing "This time Paul and Dre won't tell me what to not say" 😘

Eminem will tell you his whole life story in s song. He wanted to rap; he didn’t want fame. The song made Eminem uncancellable. 🔥

I was one of those people who recommended you listen to The Way I Am and I also said you should do Who Knew after it. Similar idea but this one is more about how people blame his words for kids acting out, acting as if the world is a perfect place and he is a bad egg. The main reason I felt it was important was because it shows he did not say all these things with hindsight, 10 years down the line. He made these type of songs while he was releasing songs like Kill You, Criminal & Kim. They are just words - one of the lines he says on The Real Slim Shady is: "I'm only giving you things you joke about with your friends inside your living room".. which is part true, but it does validate your new opinion of Eminem vs the opinion the media portrayed to you when he was at his most popular.

The point of the song is that he loves the culture, his fans, and he loves the job, but he is uncomfortable with and hates the fame and the things that come with it.

Yo agradezco la sinceridad de Eminem al decir que ocupa que lo dejen en paz, hay momentos que todos ocupamos estar solos o tener tiempo para nosotros. Eminem expresa lo que siente y lo hace saber a sus seguidores.
