A note about GoodWill that most people don't know: The different regions are technically separate companies just using the GoodWill name. They each have different CEOs and different charity endeavors. If you dislike the ones in your area, you might go out of town a little and find another region that is more interesting.

100% this. If I shop my local goodwill everything is normal retail price or more (for used items, not a good deal) but when I go closer to downtown, it's all really cheap, but still good quality stuff. Once got a $2000 bike for $50 because it was in a 'poorer' area

100% correct, never ever clean or polish an old rare coin you suspect may have value. Cleaning will definitely wipe out almost all of its collector value.

can i ask why? what about cleaning it makes it less valuable?
@nodsib
@nodsib 13 күн бұрын
@@SheepLiver sure, while you can find some collectors that don’t get too picky about condition, in general the collectors that have the real money and are willing to pay an actual premium for coins overwhelmingly value condition and authenticity most, and a cleaned coin, no matter how carefully and how much better it may look to a non-collector, will always be irreversibly damaged by the process (tiny swirls or loss of detail from polishing, or microscopic pitting or discolouration from chemical cleaners), and it no longer holds that same condition and authenticity that collectors prize.

Best haul I have found to date was at a flea market. An authentic scythe and hay rake for like 25 dollars each. To buy brand new it costs almost 200.00 for just the scythe. Though, a free haul is even better, when I got a working radio and an old Lloyd's Electronics Portable Television. All I need is an rga to antenna screws and a converter of some kind and I can convert it into whatever I want.

I've found several synths and drum machines for practically nothing at thrift stores in Sweden where I'm born and raised, and later on here in Norway where I've lived since 2016. Clothes and shoes too. EXPENSIVE shit, for no more than circa $3-$5. The synths and drum machines have never been more than around $10-$20 dollars, and they've been in fantastic condition. I just look at different stores and go relatively often, you never know when or where you're gonna find that one perfect thing! And _(to me)_ it's the "hunt" that's the most exciting. Most of the time I go home without buying anything, but when I do find something... Whoa, the adrenaline and happiness is immeasurable. There's just something special about finding things you know would have cost you quite *a lot* of money for basically nothing in comparison.

I just found a thrift book store near me and they've got a manga section- so far I've found five manga that would normally be around 12-15 dollars a pop for 2-3 dollars in almost brand new condition. Same with comic books. I've also had a shit ton of luck collecting all of the games I had/wanted for my Nintendo 3ds at local retro game stores. The retro game stores can get a little pricy depending on the game/console/accessories you're looking for and what condition they're in, but if you've got anything to spare it's always a good idea to stop by any stores like that because you never know what you'll find. Also don't waste your time at DI unless you're looking for scrap fabric or paintings. At least where I am they're strict about what they do and don't sell.

I think my best find was a perfectly working IBM Selectric II I picked from the E-waste bins at my local landfill (had to wait for the attendant to look away because you're not actually allowed to take anything, and I've heard rumors they will prosecute, but they can go suck one, it's literal trash). Looked it up when I got home and apparently they go for upwards of $300+ if they're working and relatively clean. On another day I must've gone after some HAM radio club cleared out because there was a bunch of old RF test gear, oscilloscopes, and a bench power supply that must've been from the 80s (certainly feels like it, weighs like 50lbs) Only grabbed the bench supply because the scopes were all old CRT style ones, and I didn't know what any of the RF stuff was, let alone need it. The power supply is still serving me well like 2 years later and will probably outlive me if it's survived 40 years of whatever gave it all the scratches it has. Best thrift store find I've gotten in recent memory is the Smith Corona SC-125 typewriter I found for $10 with 2 ink ribbon cassettes, and 4 different font wheels. The wheels alone go for $15+ depending on which font they are. Everything works, other than the correction feature not fully erasing the letters, but that's likely just the correction ribbon being old since my Selectric had the same thing and a new ribbon fixed it. I kept both because I'm a typewriter nerd (specifically for the electric/electronic ones --yes, there is a difference--) and a Selectric and something with multiple type wheels were two of my most wanted things (you can sometimes get extra wheels if it's a Brother, Smith Corona, or an IBM WheelWriter, but anything else is usually too obscure to find anything but listings for typewriters with extra wheels as a bundle)

I know this is a bit different, but about 5 years ago, I found a disc-only copy of the first Silent Hill at a used game store for about $35. I still consider myself extremely lucky for that.

The orange cookware @2:34 is almost certainly uranium glazed! Fiesta-ware, a dark orange glaze, first seen in the 1930's. It's a very distinctive color, used up until the 1970's when the radioactivity was confirmed. Cookware with a half-life...gotta love it! Intact cookware isn't any health problem; stuff made after 1972 isn't packing heat.

It's le creuset cookware which is a well known brand of enamelled cast iron, also its cadmium that gives the glass the orange colour not uranium. Cadmium and uranium glass (enamel is a type of glass) is pretty safe and stable unless you are actively damaging it and with that kind of cookware the enamel is only on the outside that the food doesn't come into contact with, you're far safer using that than bare aluminium or Teflon coated cookware which is actively toxic

I found a SUPER nice antique sewing machine at a Value Village for like 10 dollars. I was able mostly fix it, the tension is just off. It's a beautiful green Necchi, Bella model.

I’m gonna go ahead and admit that it’s probably my fault my local charity shop has “good finds”. I was a hoarder, but not like you see on tv; those are extreme cases. I hoarded anime figured and other rare things. As I got help from getting rid of my hoard, I gave what I could to my local charity shop. I had too much stuff to just sit and research prices for. I did keep a few things to sell because I knew their worth off the top of my head.

My biggest goodwill flex is that I got a PS3 for $7 in perfect working condition (some minor cosmetic damage). I figure whoever marked it $7 either thought it was broken or had no idea what they were looking at.

Do you not have regular charity/antique/thrift shops in the US? We don't have goodwill in the UK but we have a huge range of small charity shops from ones you'll find in most towns to ones just run by a single family in this one location. There's always good finds because there's no one location for all the thrifters to flock to.

Uk here too, unfortunately a few of my local independent charity's have been overrun by scummy "dealers" so I guess it depends where you live and how often you visit
