"Emma Dupree, Pitt County Herbalist" by Alex Albright, MFA, English (retired) on February 24, 2020.
Alex Albright will provide an overview of the life and work of Emma Dupree, who was the subject of the 1979 ECU film “Little Medicine Thing: Emma Dupree Herbalist”. Born in 1897 along the Tar River, Dupree was known as “that little medicine thing” because of her understanding of herbs at an early age. As an elderly woman, she shared much of her knowledge of the medicinal properties of native plants with physicians and medical anthropologists. Dupree received the Brown-Hudson Award from the North Carolina Folklore Society in 1984 and the North Carolina Heritage Award in 1992. She died just shy of her 100th birthday, in 1996.

AfroAmericaninAfrica -i've been an herbalist for a long time,, (self-taught with a few mentors),, just like your great-great grandmother. i would LOVE the opportunity to chat with you,,,, I saw the video put out by East Carolina University,,, she used some of the plants in ways i've never heard of. Is there a family member of anyone i can contact?? i would Love to make sure her knowledge is not lost. Respect, thank you

@@JustMe-gs9xi I noticed that she used plants in different ways, too. So fascinating and such an extraordinary woman. Sometimes our world is blessed with these very special and advanced souls such as Mrs. Dupree.

I think i'm on the same tip as y'all. We had a herbalist in our family. John Lee. UNC interviewed him but he passed on. I would've loved to sit with him. If y'all find any connections to this type of knowledge please let me know. I would love to learn.

Emma Dupree was an absolute GIFT! The thing that stinks is when we are young, we don't realize the valuable information that our elders hold and as we grow older, and they pass on, we have that regret that we didn't pay closer attention and soak it all in.

Somebody need to write a book about Ms. Emma and her gift of herbs for healing. We all know it's people out there that don't want "us" to know about the natural way of healing. That's alright I will find out thanks to Ms. Emma opening my eyes to herbs. Doing my research. Thank you Ms Emma Dupre❤

I encourage your family to do your genealogy. Most "blacks" from NC are descendants of the American Indian. Talk to your ancestors, that are still living. There's probably land out there for you all to claim. Find your family, find your tribe 🪶🪶🪶🪶
