Yup, I also wonder about the big estate like this..is that common in UK? I also noticed for this kind of era films, it's either son (pride & prejudice) or daughter (downtown abbey) will be entitled to inherit the estate..how they decide between that? 🤔

It’s too clean. Unrealistic of the time . Pride and Prejudice the film has a better period feel . Things were not this clean then

I didn’t care much for the pastel look of everything, as people wore vivid dark colors even then, and the houses at the time showed that style. But, the clothes were fantastic is silhouette and trend!

​@@Udontkno7 Well the interiors of Wilton house (pictured at 5:22) cannot be described as pastel, look at the Baroque “Double Cube Room” (decorated in 1653) at 6:09, or the “Single Cube Room” (decorated at some point between 1630-1645) straight after - not forgetting the two rooms before that: “the Colonnade Room” and “Great Anteroom” (although you couldn’t really see much of them). However the orange cloisters did fit the time period/ films aesthetic (having been installed around 1810). The houses/ people of the time definitely retained older styles, look at what was used to depict Rosings Park in the 2005 adaption of Pride and Prejudice; the Renaissance Burghley House (built 1555-1587), along with some of the Baroque interiors such as the “Heaven Room” (decorated in 1690), even Lady Catherine de Bourgh herself wore clothes/ hair of an older age. So of course not everything will have been redecorated in the Regency style, but I think it was important for the film to show strong attributes of the period in order to convey it successfully to the audience - plus I really loved the colours!

I love his Mr. Woodhouse because he plays him not as a hypochondriac, but as a man who is getting old and his children are fleeing the nest. Mentally this Mr. Woodhouse is there and physically he is strong. He just doesn’t want change.

Exactly! It is more of a comedy and they made it more so in the way they made it

For me, she is the worst choice for the character of "Emma". You could never compare her with the brilliant performance of Romola Garai, who played the part in 2009. Yes, "Emma" is posh and snobbish, but never arrogant or coldhearted, like Taylor Joy portrays her. I could hardly watch her act...!

Oh please she is soo snobby!!! With a heart of gold! She has no idea she is snobby. She just wants to do good in the world she is in. I love her soo much. Mr. Knightley compliments her personality perfectly

Jane Austen herself described her as "a heroine nobody but myself will like". But yeah. Her evolution by the ending was wonderful.

Well, book Emma is very snobby, arrogant and a mean gossip to begin with. She is very kind to her family and close friends, but towards people lower in status than her she is very inconsiderate. She does manage to grow out of it somewhat by the end of the book.

I like Emma. I don’t care if she is snobby or arrogant. Austen was able to take a character with really nothing special and made her special.

After reading the book I thought it was mainly because Emma loved to receive praise, even from Mr. Knightley as he was prone to criticising her quite often

Don't take it from me, you can read Mansfield Park, or Pride and Prejudice, or Emma, or Northanger Abbey ... it's not so pronounced in Sense and Sensibility, but it's there, too. Use of body language and facial expressions turns up all over the place in Jane Austen's stories. What the point of the added nudity was - I have no clue. To make it look modern, or risqué, or daring? Gettting-dressed scenes can be great to give us a look into the world a character inahbits - see the "dangerous liaisons" movie with Michelle Pfeiffer. In this one? _Oh look, a naked bottom._ Also, I just learned that both romantic leads have something in common: they are bottle blond and get dressed in the morning. Clearly, they are made for each other! No seriously: those two scenes looked suspiciously like somebody had decided that the movie nees to have something that sets it apart from a few dozen other Jane Austen adaptations, and it was that or slaughtering a pig on-screen. I agree that the movie is extremely visual, but that kind of comes with being a movie. I just wish the director had relied on the movie being so very visual and tuned down the music, because that comes along like a sledge hammer, trying to point out how funny, ironic or entertaining something is. All in all, this movie feels like the director didn't even expect the viewers to pay attention, so he made all the characters so in-your-face vapid, full of themself, silly that you won't miss it even if the movie runs in the background while you're playing Forge of Empires.

Jane Austen has a great many references to specific music in all her novels; fewer perhaps in Northanger Abbey.

Completely agree. This is not a version which is likely to appeal to those who love Jane Austen's books. Why can't film companies leave well enough alone.

I had the feeling when I rented this movie that as much as I like Anya Taylor-Joy I don't think she carried this film well enough to compensate for some of the more boring parts. She was not portrayed as likable enough to offset her annoying petulance. In other versions we know she is somewhat a snob but she is also innocent enough in her high mindedness to be forgiven. In this version, she fails to be likable and one wonders what Mr. Knightly could possibly see in her. I didn't see any chemistry between the two and Johnny Flynn seems an unlikely admirer. and vice verse. I blame the director as all the characters are good actors but this version was not a good one and the gratuitous nude scene ridiculous and cringe-worthy...wrong parade.

The whole point of the book was how snobby and childish she was, i would say she has a faster character growth in the book which makes her more likeable

She is even more snobby in the book, especially with Robert Martin and the Coles even if they aren't bad people. She lectures Mr Knightley too because he doesn't use a carriage like a proper gentleman lol
