I'm gutted the match Fernandez wasn't able to take it to a decider, but Raducanu was relentlessly hanging in there in the second set when she was having everything but the kitchen sink thrown at her. I love watching the ladies of the 90's and I just hope we're going into a strong era of women's tennis with some characters and consistency. It's a shame Barty retired and Osaka is struggling mentally :(

You use whatever means to help you or to give you an edge as long as it's within the rules. Towelling down after a point is a way to compose yourself ready for the next point or to throw your opponent's rhythm off. I am a Filipino but my heart is with Emma Raducanu. She is gracious, elegant, kind and so mature for a young woman. She's got a great head on her shoulders, pun absolutely intended. I also love her playstyle - perfect balance of controlled aggression, smart shot selection and airtight defensive skills. I think this is the first of many grand slams for her. Tennis fans couldn't have asked for a better ambassador of the sport and she couldn't have come at a better time than now. I am a fan!

This match is a glorious spectacle for tennis after everything that happened in the semis. Leylah Fernandez beating Aryna Sabekenka and Emma Raducanu beating Maria Sakkari. To confirm the changing of the guard. To highlight the fearlessness of the new generation. To create history by having two teenagers unseeded reach the final. Players who will be connected together because of this unique piece of history. Two players who have a charismatic style of play. They are exciting to watch, not robotic ball bashers. They play silently during the points but evoke emotions after the points. They engage the crowd and the fans love them back. There is serenity, elegance and poise to both of their games. It was such a special 5 hours of tennis that night. The celebrations even greater because they both won with that style and personality of play. It created a final where there was no loser. They both triumphed in a special way. Winning the hearts of sports fans across the world.

Leylah only lacked a little bit of serve quality other than that rallies were evenly matched. On some points, it felt like female versions of Djokovic and Nadal since they both move so well on the court. Especially Emma's returns were amazing, could be one of the best on the tour. Overall, haven't seen a match of this quality in a while. Beautiful how they just refuse to move back from the baseline and hits early and pushing each other with similar styles. Could be a start of something special but of course, it would take an amazing amount of consistency and brilliance on and off the court, so we will hope and see.

Honestly, the WTA has been more interesting than the ATP for at least the last two years. 2007-2017 was an incredible period in the men's game. At its peak, you had five players hunting for trophies with a realistic chance of winning: Nadal, Federer, Djokovic, Murray, Wawrinka. (Occasionally Delpo if he was fit.) With Murray out as an effective force since mid-2017, Wawrinka no longer in the hunt, and Federer stop-start, it's been pretty dull stuff, dominated heavily by Djokovic.

What an achievement, 20 straight sets against higher ranked opponents without facing a single set point or tie break. A one-off...And a great final too. To be pedantic, the first two matches (first four sets) were against lower-ranked opponents. After that, though, just crushing the field all the way through. I was left speechless so many times by what she kept achieving! Leylah was also brilliant, I can understand her getting caught up in the moment over the blood timeout, forgive and move on quickly. And she pays such an exciting brand of tennis for me to want to hold that against her! Honestly, against basically anybody else I'd have backed Leylah to win this thing.

I suspect they'll do well at the Aussie next up but let's not put pressure on either of them because this could be a great competition between them both and Naomi in the future. And yes let's not get hung up on Leylah wigging it a bit at the medical T/O, we can't understand the stress they were under and we've seen far more experienced players venting in a far worse way over and over.
