In the new film Cruella, American actor Emma Stone does a British English accent but how good is it? In this video I deconstruct her accent and show you what pronunciation features she is using to do this accent. This is super useful if you are interested in British accents and love watching TV shows like The Crown and Downton Abbey.

Considering that most American actors are pretty bad at faking British accents, Emma's was pretty decent. But you can still tell she's not native even without knowing she's from the States

Yep it's pretty good for an American but somewhat over-enunciated compared to the real thing. It's good enough for the points Tom is making. Compare Downton for the 'real' thing if you really need to speak like this. Just be aware that most British people don't.

Goes both ways. Most British actors are pretty terrible at faking American accents - easy to spot the fake. Aussies are the best at both.

@@andysachs83 I’m English, and I’ve never met someone with an rp accent. And I live in the south. I think because many British actors and actresses who get into American tv are more upper class, Americans are used to hearing a more posh accent. But in Europe, where many uhhh *not posh* people like to go on holiday, people get a more accurate look of how English people act.

Have you seen Emma in The Favorite? She co-stared that film along with Olivia Coleman (who won the Oscar) and Rachel Wise. Her British accent is even more impressive, since Cruella is a cartoonish character and the lines and the way of speaking are sometimes over the top.

@@sarahberkner Yep, he's doing a West Country accent, which is spoken in the south-west of England, so Cornwall, Devon, Somerset etc. I haven't actually seen Lord of the Rings, so I just KZfaqd a clip of him in it :) I personally wouldn't say he totally nails it - sometimes the American slips back in a bit, and sometimes it sounds slightly Irish. Not saying I'm perfect (and in fact, I'm always trying to get better) but it's fun anyway! Side note: I knew this air traffic controller who worked SFO tower and her uptalk was insane. "Redwood 249, wind 300 at 7, runway 28R, cleared to land????" 🤦‍♂ I was like "is she asking or telling us?"

It was relatively good in the context that RP is usually done very badly by American actors. I think the problem is that they tend to focus on select sounds; "ah" "uh" "ih". The problem is that they often do tend to ignore all the rest (or are otherwise unaware). The biggest mistake I often see in people who attempt RP is that they seem to think absolutely everything should be said with the larynx pushed down and resonance in the back of the throat. Some sounds definitely belong there, but by no means all do lol. That's where it starts to lose authenticity, especially if it is dipping in and out regularly. However, as I said earlier, in the grand scheme of things it was still relatively better than other attempts (but that bar isn't particularly high lol).

I haven't seen the film yet and only got up to where you say she's using RP early on in the video. I would have assumed she's be using a transalantic accent since the orignal cartoon made a point of that, and I remember she had said at some point she had learnt the transatlantic accent with a dialect coach for another movie before she got the part for that one. It turns out they didn't want her to have a transatlantic accent for the other movie, and that Cruella was a bit of a long time in the making so I assumed it would be used in Cruella too and that disney had approached her because of it. Edit: and I have seen a clip of her saying "Anita, darling" which is a reference to the animation which is very over the top and I can expect other references to pop up even if they're not specific. If you look at the Cruella voice actor they talk about how purposfully over the top she was as a person and how her voice got stuck in this transatalntic theatrical one

She sounds like Liz Hurley crossed with Joan Collins in the clip, it’s not bad but it doesn’t sound natural, she’s concentrating so hard on her pronunciation & enunciation, even her mouth shapes look as though she’s trying really hard to get it right. Maybe those clips aren’t representative of the film as a whole. It is nice though to see an American playing an English villain for a change.

I feel like many of us Americans can easily reproduce English (in particular) vowel sounds, but we can't really hear and therefore reproduce the musicality of British speech. It seems to involve the elongation and strong emphasis of certain words and syllables that we don't emphasize as well as a completely different use of pitch. When I did a study abroad at Cambridge many years ago, my US peers and I giggled a lot mainly because of the unfamiliar pitches and emphasis of certain words in sentences that we were not accustomed to hearing. After dinner, the servers would walk down the line at the table and ask "Coffee?" ("KOH?-feh?"), sounding to us as if they were singing it. A reading of an old English poem called "The Rape of the Lock" unfortunately made me laugh because of the strange (to my ear) power-emphasis of certain words. In my Tennyson class, even just the professor's way of saying "the princess" was striking-yes, because she stressed prin-CESS where we say PRIN-cess, but also because of the heft of her voice during the stressed second syllable, and the slight lingering on it. I don't think any American accents really do anything similar. Some southern US accents do involve a lot more musical intonation than the rest of the much flatter national way of pronouncing words, but I can't think of any US dialect that involves saying certain words in all sentences in such a powerful, "punchy" way. The TV character Frasier Crane sort of does this in his theatrical way, but it's really preposterous and it's part of the comedy of the sitcom Frasier because no one here really speaks this way, whereas everyone in the UK does. I studied French in school and for a few years in college, and my study abroad in England left me feeling that British English is as influenced by French pronunciation as American English is by German and Dutch. Most American dialects seem to have been ironed out over time, with both spellings and pronunciations changed to eliminate any kind of ornamental, non-utilitarian aspects, whereas British English and French feel like they have more whimsicality and joie de vivre to them.

I think her British accent is very good but not 100% convincing. When you see the scenes of her with Emma Thompson, it's obvious which one of them is native British. In Stone's accent, although the sounds she's making are pretty accurate, it just doesn't quite hang together properly. I say that sympathetically though (I really like Emma as an actress) - improving by that final inch or so would take a huge amount of work, and also I think it's hard when an actor is doing an accent in a very theatrical performance like Cruella, since audiences who are listening to an accent critically will often naturally read theatricality as being wrong in terms of accuracy. I thought Emma's British accent was better in The Favourite, which is a less theatrical performance
