Em J- you are such a wonderful teacher and person. I have tried for YEARS to learn watercolor. Took classes but never got the basics like you teach. THANK YOU!!!!! It has been so wonderful during the pandemic to finally begin to understand watercolor and to have it to be such a calm influence in my life. I am going to your Etsy shop, and I also will contact Arches and Winsor Newton to tell them how you promote their products. I want you to be able to be an at home MOM, but also get something for what you give to all of US!!!!! I just found you, so this is a year later- and Congrats on your second pregnancy!! You go Girl!!!!!!

Hi Emma. I missed the live as it was 3am in Belgium. You're doing great. We're all here because we want to hear and see you! And what you have to teach. So don't put yourself down!! Don't overdo it and get yourself run down!!! Your little family is your first priority. My daughter's doctor just prescribed her 2 weeks off work. It worries me that she just takes on too much. Please take care of yourself. It's ok to say ' no, sorry, not at this moment in my life'. You don't owe us anything 😉😉 This was great to watch. I'm a 58 year old grandma and you've inspired me to try out painting and I love it!!! Thank you. God bless. Love, Isobel. XXXXX

I love the fact that your videos are free and full length. I’m also a teacher, so you are aware of our limited funds, that’s why I love watching you. Other artists who started Patreon accounts will only show time lapsed videos or short portions. You show from beginning to end, and I love that about you. Thank you, you’ve taught this beginner a lot! I’d love to know more about mixing two and three colors. For example, you taught me by mixing purple into your green will result in a darker, evergreen shade. I’d love to learn more tricks like that one.

Don't doubt yourself Emma. You are unique and the art world needs you :). Have confidence and share what you love. The right people will resonate with you. You do you. I love watching your videos. You have helped me so much. You are awesome. Don't feel like you have to do anything more....just do what you can do. You have a little one so don't stress on doing more. When it is time, you will know there is room for more. Until then, enjoy your family and share what you love.

Don’t worry about in person workshops. It is a lot of work that takes too much time to set up. Go with Patreon. Charge $2 a month. Everyone can afford $2 and would love to support you. Paper, paints, brushes all cost money and it would give some income you could blow on more supplies. For Patreon, give an extra video every month, have a drawing to win an original of yours. Check other artists and see what they give out. Love your videos and thank you for being you!

One tier on Patreon you could give would be sketches of the work you are teaching. You have to sketch the idea's out anyway and instead of people who follow you trying to redraw, they could get a pdf of your sketch. Only extra work would be inking the sketch and digitizing it.

In my community a great place to get your feet wet in planning your workshops would be public libraries as in they allow different classes in their buildings. Also in my community there are Adult community education classes at both community colleges and public schools. Our parks department also have venues available for classes. You give them a percentage of your fees. As for supplies it is common to have a set fee for the class. Say $50 for a 2-hour class + $20 supply fee (or whatever is more reasonable for your area). If you buy the large sheets of Arches Watercolor Paper and then tear them they are less expensive than buying a pad. For a beginner class they can even be used on both sides for practicing strokes.

Emma, let me say that I adore you and your Authenticity’ you have assisted me in my passion for water colors. Trust me when I say my watercolors were dismal before I found your tutorials. Second’’ I understand all the unanswered questions causes anxiety in regards to setting up, planning classes. You don’t have to please anyone but yourself with all the details that will make them authentic to you. We love your teaching style. You will figure out things that students can see as added value to walk out with in regards to supplies.. as well as if you set up a michaels they used to give discounts to students for the supply lists, or give the discount to instructor to be able to have all supplies ready and set up in the classroom. You might even reach out to your favorite suppliers to see if they would sponsor your class, once they see how many subscribers you have and that you plug for them all the time. You never know until you try. I believe you can pull together amazing things and I am cheering for you.

I am so excited and wanted to share with you. I took your advice and got Arches paper and it is amazing. I also bought some Princeton brushes and they truly make a difference. Also, today I received my order from Jackson's (London) and I am truly blown away. I ordered a 3piece set of Billy Sherill kolinsky brushes and a calligraphy set with Chinese brushes. They are absolutely wonderful. The snap is amazing. Also, I got a sample order of Stonehenge Aqua paper. One of the 5x7 sheets is 300 weight and the others are 140. I now know the difference in the feel of hot pressed and. cold pressed. I came to watercolor very late in my life but I love it with a passion. Thank you for all the time you spend creating the great tutorials. You're a wonderful teacher. Now to rewatch the color theory video and get to painting. I forgot, I am still using sub-par paint but intend to remedy that as soon as I recover from the holiday expenses!

I try to solve the confusing 'warm-cool' conundrum by dividing the 'warm-cool' concept into two different categories of 'warm-cool'. So the 'Yellow-Orange-Red' warmth and the 'Green-Blue-Purple' coolness are to me 'First-order-temperatures'. Thennnnn: every single one of the primaries can appear within their own hue-group as 'warm' (i.e: Yellow ocre) or 'cool' (i.e. lemon yellow). This I call 'second-order-temperature'. It sounds a little technical, but this helps me to identify, what level of temperature we are talking about. Thank you for the helpful Info! I love your videos :-) Greetings from Switzerland

Thanks for sharing this video. I couldn’t be home for the live posting. You have the BEST tutorials on KZfaq! That is because you not only explain what you are doing as you paint but why. Just as important, you are a genuine person that ‘students’ can feel a connection to. There are other artists out there doing pretty paintings with nice background music, but without any instructions the results just seem unattainable to people like me. Wishing you all the best in 2020.

Patreon's confusing to me as well, but it does seem like it's the go-to place to make money, once you're ready to take the plunge. I know there are some watercolorists that post regularly both platforms. You could check out how they divvy it up with the free youtube videos and the paid patreon classes. I think their youtube videos concentrate on techniques (stretching paper, glazing, wet-in-wet, etc.) and then on Patreon they teach full tutorials. Two that I'm aware of are Louise de Masi (very organized on Patreon) and Maria Raczynska (not at all organized on Patreon). Regardless, it's usually hard for artists to place a monetary value on their time but it should not be so. I think people are generally very happy to pay for instruction.

For your workshop goal, offer 5 spaces for a 2 hour workshop (so that you do not have to purchase more brushes or other supplies). Or something that works for you. So similar to what you recently did. You don't have to have a handout each time. You just say to any of your circles that you have 5 spaces available for what date(s). I assure you that you will make a name for yourself very quickly and then the next opportunity will come along. You can also ask if a friend would like to host it if you do not want it in your home and give them a free spot in the workshop.

Have you done a tutorial on lettering? I’d love that online. About a live class, I took a class from a teacher in Phoenix Az. That was in another artist house, I guess she rented the room for Tuesday nights. The whole living room was the teaching area. We bought our own supplies from a list she printed out before hand. It’s been awhile so I don’t remember the cost of the classes. I do know that years later I still get Christmas cards from her and we are still friends. Her name is Julie Gilbert Pollard. She once said to the class the only way to make money with art was to sell art supplies, lol. I think she makes money teaching and selling her art. 🥰

Venue and planning classes --- do you have a local shop (independent business) that you could partner with to set up classes, and teach/instruct at their location (or in a loaned or rented space)? Do you have a paint-buddy group that would assist you to get this started? Seek out / make use of all your immediate resources. Seek out other Y/T-ers who offer classes: the art community is willing to share their ideas, and provide suggestions/direction on getting started. The chat comments are also giving great suggestions -- library, Michael's, church, diner/coffee shop -- great ideas!! Used (or "stained") -- makes no difference (just like stamps that are ink stained -- they still work). Don't over-think it. Create a supplies list well in advance of class date, participants buy/bring their own. Sketch out a "Business Plan" -- identify challenge areas, decide how to get it working, functional, and profitable. (Suggestion): Make your ETSY goal #1 -- the easiest and quickest to accomplish. (Arteza or other brands) -- do you have a preference for USA- or North American-made products, vs. other countries' products? STAY POSITIVE -- you have lots of supporters!!!

We love you! You’re too cute:) It’s funny that you mention maybe having ADD... I was thinking that you might have it all through the video based on what you stated your struggles are. I have ADHD & had been treated, incorrectly, since I was 16 for anxiety & depression. At 35 I was diagnosed with ADHD & that made a world of difference!!! Overwhelm, sensitivity, the “racing” thoughts/ideas, trouble getting things done (larger projects & goals) & losing your train of thought are ALL symptoms of ADHD:) Thank you for being you & being REAL!

You are so amazing and awesome! I love how real you are. Patreon is a venue for artists to teach their subscribers more than what they offer on their regular KZfaq channel. It would take you more time because you would have to not only submit to your KZfaq channel but then do above and beyond for patreon. A lot of KZfaq artists stop sharing content on KZfaq and just focus on patreon. It’s like they don’t care about their subscribers any longer and just want money. It’s sad. I do believe you are good enough and have lots to share on patreon but if you decide to go that route you will have to put in the extra time and work. I also think selling your artwork on Etsy will be very successful. I think you seriously need to invest in artist grade paint if you plan to do that though. Amateur paint fades much quicker and you need to sell artists quality artwork. I use Daniel Smith and I love it so much!! I think if you ever switch to artists paint you’ll never go back. The way I filled my palette is by first buying a set with small tubes. Then I would buy another tube every time I could afford it. I can get a 15 ml tube on amazon for about $12. I would buy paint on my birthday and for Christmas, etc. It all adds up quickly and you will have a lot of paint pretty quickly. You can stick with winsor & newton professional if you want. Some artists really like M Graham and they are less expensive than Daniel Smith. Please continue to share your talents with us. You are a really fun channel! I wish I could give you a boost of confidence. Nothing you’ve done or said is goofy or bad. You look great and you’re a lot of fun!! It will be a lot of fun to see which direction you choose to follow this year. 😁💞

I've learned a bunch about why a color is warm and why it is cool - thank you. That has always confused me. I appreciate your time very much. Primary red is not actually "red". In the printing world it is Magenta (CMYK is cyan, magenta, yellow and black). The primary "red" is actually a pinkish color which is why you get the pretty purple using the Rose. I have Quin Rose in M. Graham and D. Smith, and Permanent Rose in W&N tagged in my color list as Primaries. Thank you again for your time.

Hi! I love your channel and seeing the real you in live sessions. 👍. I think to support your art and craft, Patreon is a good choice. Use KZfaq to build your audience has you have done. And then just start creating any new stuff in Patreon. KZfaq doesn’t pay much any more is my understanding. And Patreon is a way to make a little. You are inspiring and I’m glad I found your channel.

i really appreciate that your channel is not full of sponsored videos and product reviews. And I appreciate your honest that people do support you by viewing your videos - I love that your videos are completely free, no strings attached from beginning to end. I understand that you also want to make money on your end... but perhaps starting out with a POBox; people could send things if they want, and that keeps everything very similar on your channel and doesn't increase your workload. ? Patreon is a very good avenue for some channels... but it also starts separating your community, and it can sometimes feel like the youtuber puts a lot of time and energy into their Patreons and then the actual channel content is an after thought. This can be fine if you want to make the Patrons feel special, but will it help grow your channel? You have to be really intentional about managing that, I think. I would also suggest as a first step for Patreon to see how taxes in Canada would impact that revenue. If charging $1 or $2 would add up to enough, and then after taxes.... and after Patreon takes their cut, how much would you keep if that money - and does that still make it worth any extra time involved?

You are enough. I know if you wanted to set your mind to more, you could. I like the Daniel Smith colors so you could show them? I’ve heard of an online store called Cheap Joes? I’m going to try looking at it again I think I’ve used them a long time ago.

I’m know the purpose of a tutorial for a painting is so people can follow along, but I feel bad for ‘copying’ your work. Is there a way I can give you credit when I post them? I tagged you in a few on instagram I think but didn’t want to bombard you with notifications. I then went on to follow a few of your videos and made them into Christmas cards for family, (sadly I forgot to scan them but I did take photos of most of them). I understand you can only produce stuff on limited time because of your boy but I would appreciate (and I’m sure others in the uk would too ) if you could maybe make your live streams earlier as 9pm in Canada is 2am here and I like to sleep lol. Could you maybe try doing shorter ones earlier in the day like 6pm your time? If not don’t worry, I’m just a big fan. As for your video about your depression etc, I came across your video on the transparent flowers when I myself was stuck in that same black hole and painting has really helped me. I’ve never commented on a video before so that shows how warm and welcoming you are x

So do you only use these 4 colors for everything? I have and love the da vinci line of colors, but is creating a swatch chart of ALL of the colors you have advisable? I am thoroughly confused by the color wheel, colors of warm & cool (HOW do you know which is which if you have say...yellow ochre & prussian blue?). I am SO overwhelmed by color, that I've never done a color wheel, chart, or anything else. I simply keep mixing colors until I find a combo I like. Honestly, is it even necessary, Emma?

I don’t just use 4 colours. I have a lot but I wanted to show that you don’t need a lot. I like creating a chart of the colours I have just as a reference, I think it’s a good idea. As for warm and cool colours it can be tricky. It’s not imperative that you know, it just helps with colour mixing. But if you just experiment with mixing all of your colours, that perfect!

This was statated in another comment, but can you get affiliate links for princeton brushes and WN paint? Or, can you make amazon store with links to each of the paints and your favorite products? each time someone clicks that link to go to amazon it will give you a small credit. That could add up? i think a POBox would also be a quick way to start out that takes minimal time and effort to start? I think viewers would definitely be willing to send some paint or paper!!

Hi Emma, I enjoyed watching the this video but I was late watching it. I would've loved to watch it live but oh well. So I guess I answered your question do people watch this video in a rerun? The answer is yes! How about that. So don't feel like your not interesting because you are! Ya!!! I hear what your saying about it cost to much to get other paints to review also different types of paper and brushes. It seems like Arteze would send you free stuff to review on your channel? Umm? I like your color theory 👌 then the chatting was good. I did buy the prang paints to try and they are not to bad. I wouldn't paint a piece with them because I don't think they would survive very long time. The paint is short lived. Also if you want your pieces to last spray them with a sealant. Like Krylon Kamar varnish non-yellowing protection for watercolor, oil, acrylic. It does work. I use it. I posted a painting I did in watercolor on Facebook and used this product to finish it. I wish I could post my painting so you could give me your opinion on my painting. Oh well that's the way it goes. Ok well keep making your videos. Have a great weekend! 😊😎FL.

Don't understand why you worry about patreon . Why should people not sign up to support what you do . Why do you have to give them extra. I think you can set at $1 Surely a lot would sign up as a dollar is nothing to a lot of people . You could have private q & a's why are you worrying about extra content. Get affiliate links to brushes and paper on Amazon and earn a bit there. Workshops charge what the market are charging . If you paid 200 You could start by doing a morning for 150 and see what happens . I bet it works. I am so pleased you saved the video and I loved listening to you talk 😆😍😘

Ruth Walton great idea to do affiliate links -- she is always recommending the same supplies, if she had an amazon store links, that would even probably help... or affiliate links if she could get them...
